Just a little cookie for all of you guys whining about how LAN and singleplayer games will be ruined:

I'm not sure if it will ever cease or not. The constant nagging question
that people are asking - Will Steam be required to have an internet
connection active when starting up a singleplayer game or a LAN game?

It's giving me a headache

Seen the petition yet?

No, it won't.

There will be a brief transition (like two weeks) when it is necessary, but
then it will go away. It's a temporary issue.

If you use FlashGet or any DA/DM, please try to put it at only one, single connection instead of 10 simultaneous. It's bad enough like this.

Well, I've made up my mind about steam. It sucks so much that it is a reason to come up with a new word which goes way beyond "sucks"

First I had steam downloaded. No real problems there, a bit sluggish obviously but apart from that, no big deal. Installing the thing wasn't a big issue either nor was the conversion part. The update however was a complete fiasco. Getting CS and all the other games "downloaded" went suprisingly fast but then there was the issue of "updating" them or some crap like that as well. Took forever and I couldn't of course start any game at all cause if I tried to launch, Steam would just start updating or something while loading (CS in this case) and then crash.

Then there was this issue that when I closed steam, I couldn't start up any mods the old fashioned way (I kept a backup of all mods; thank god that steam at least gave the option of keeping a backup of the mods) because if I've had steam on then almost anything that I started up would crash on me, and I'd have to reboot.

Then I discovered that each time I started up steam it would scan my entire HD for a couple of minutes each time which really was extremely frustrating. And I still couldn't play a single game. (some lucky souls were of course able to play already)

Well, then I decided to download the new steam+cs package...took a while to find a good link, but after some time and with a download accelerator I had the file after about 30 minutes...so I try and install it...first time wen't ok, no real problems...steam starts up normally, I log on again, and try and start up and log in on a CS server...behold...this program has performed an illegal operation...great, steam kills itself and I try to start it up...only to find out that I apparently can't start it up again, cause the illegal operation message pops up again...fine, I reboot the computer, and behold, the illegal operation is STILL there...now I can't even start steam up at all...

So I think, WTH, and I uninstall the whole thing again. And delete anything that had to do with steam. Then I try and install it again; a fresh start. Well, great move, cause now I get a new suprise. While installing I suddenly get an I/O error message (blue screen of death). Apparently something got screwed up when transfering the files to the HD. Ends up in yet another reboot (what a suprise). I try to install a couple of more times. Am yet again greeted with blue screens of death. Fine then, I scan my HD for viruses and run scandisc. No problems found. I check how much space I have left. Not much left at all, but it met the recommended specs. I deleted a few things nontheless, and tried to install again. This time the blue screen of death never came but I managed to install steam successfully...at last. I log in again, and I see that I am not downloading anything at all which means that I probably have all the things I need already installed this time. The Steam+CS package came with all the converted HL+mods already so no conversions were made. Steam apparently stopped to scan my HD as well when starting up and I saw a tiny glimpse of hope. So I try and log in to a CS server yet again, after several hours. And behold, I am stuck with that annoying "preparing to play Counter-Strike" window yet again...nothing happens, not even after 30 minutes.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is where I am now...

So give me one good reason for why should I or everyone else, like Steam, the most pathetic excuse for a program I've seen so far.

Yesterday I was on neutral terms with Steam as I wanted to give it a chance and see if it was good or not with my own eyes.

Today, after having "evaluated" Steam, I came to realize that it would have been better if I've never even heard about Steam at all...

And the best bit, which some have voiced already: There is absolutely no customer support avaliable anywhere. Oh, yes, a few email addresses in the steam site...I have a bigger chance of winning a million on a lottery than getting a reply from the customer support, as I am pretty much sure that they are currently bombarded with a few thousands mails per hour from people who also haven't had much luck with Steam.

I'm sick and tired of all the crashes, the bugs and problems that Steam has come with. And this was supposed to be the first "non-beta" version?

And to think that everyone's gonna be forced to live with this from now on.

Heheh, NS seems to be working fine over WON. My advice: get over the fact you made a mistake by being in the "OMGZORZ I WANT A 4 DIGIT ID!!!!!!111" rush, delete all the crap (or reformat if your are lazy), reinstall the old HL and NS, and resume the normal schedule of chomping marines faces off

Deal with Steam when you have to (ie: not now).

OO J00 R T3H L337 H4X00R!

Yeah, actually, Gabe Newell has his home phone number up online and supposedly doesn't mind people calling him up for the most part. I'm sure he's had to disconnect it temporarily due to an overwhelming rush of calls from people who don't know how hard a software release of this scale is.

Every time I try to join a game (or do anything really), my steam just stops responding. I DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO REGISTER MY DAMN CD-KEY! I made an account on the 4th try (kept freezing up), never asked for my CD-Key or anything, and then I tried to download a mod, and my Steam just stops responding. What am I doing wrong!?

well all i can suggest is try to make it stop
how many people here bought half-life because it was a sierra game and not a valve game (going back to release time) Never even knew who valve were, still think of half-life as sierras game, and WON is one of the best imo ways to play online, what i dont get is, won isnt dying, there are too many games running of wons servers for it to die, steam is pointless, all its "features" are done in ASE and even game-spy and EVERY game finder program PLUS they also have access to good games too, not just the pap valve churn out (imo HL being their only good game to date, hoping HL2 isnt all hype). I play HL-single player mods all the time, and this is such BS that a SP game will need a net connection.

Download the 400 meg Steam file. Check FP ( it has long wait lines).

What it basically is is the stuff you download automatically when starting a game. However, since it goes incredibly slow with Steam, you might as well download this. It has all the stuff you need to play, cs 1.6, and tfc.
• DarkFrostDarkFrost Join Date: 2003-04-03 Member: 15154Members, NS1 Playtester, Constellation
ASE has always autoupdated my things for me. and as it stands i play TFC, i have everything i need, CS was a game we played (way back when TFC was king) and hoped TFC didnt notice. CS is now the game you hope noone notices you play

AFAIK HL was Valve's first game, so yeah, it'd be pretty hard to have bought HL because it was a Valve game.

I bought HL because I heard it rocked. And who made it rock? It wasn't Sierra.

6 months from now, when I have to pay (in dollars of course because I'm in the UK...) $0.50 per minute I play on a Steampowered HL server, ..

Well, I won't ever be buying any game from Valve again, let's put it that way.

As a server OP, I put a LOT of time and (extremely valuable to me) money (I'm a student) into NS. The WON system supported that, although there were many problems with that too, but those were intermittent and not often. Steam however is a whole new level. Welcome to the new order. I believe that we will be paying to play online, not too very long from now. I don't WANT to run ANOTHER bit of software when I start my game, I need every **** bit of memory I can get - I DO NOT WANT THIS SOFTWARE.

I don't believe it's spyware, I do however believe it's a way to forcefeed pay2play gaming to PC users.

If you believe it is pay-to-play then you are truly an ignorant person. I think Valve already cleared this up.
