for the real hardcore "I'm dropping HL forever" people theres a multiplayer add-on (free) coming out for Unreal 2. It's all bases, building, vehicles and classes. Bit like NS for building stuff but mixed with Team Fortress/Tribes.

Here's a preview: http://www.beyondunreal.com/content/articles/57_1.php

I don't think I'll be throwing HL just yet though by the sounds of it they really need to get patching steam something terrible and FAST =s

Its the steam rant thread. The whole purpose is for everyone who is **** off at this hunk of crap to let their feelings out in one post here, rather than 50 people making 50 topics...

That and maybe if we can get enough of these good solid complaints (not just generic "omg steam sux0rs" stuff) maybe somebody (like a crazed sniper) will notice...

Yes I know, but what I was saying was how usually you find at least one person trying to defend the product.

When I double click on Half-Life, it says "will now download HL. install/cancel?" and just freezes there.

Xzilen: Maybe nobody likes the product?

I am. Once its completely working, IE: The version that rides along with HL2, I think it will be a great thing, and right now these are minor....glitches, so hold out, someday it will work.

Well, on IRC i think i've made it abundantly clear that i have problems with Steam, but i'll still preface this message with the following. I still think Steam is a good idea, the extra features and services it brags would be great, if they worked.

I'm not directly anti-Steam, for the fact that the concept is a good one and i'm sure that future releases will be better.

With all the above said, i'm absolutely furious. Steam crashes with every action i take. Update HL? NO! *Steam Crashes*. Reinstall HL (through Steam)? NO! *Steam Crashes*. Open Steam? NO! *Steam Crashes*. I swear, this program has crashed at every opportunity it could find.

As i sit here now my HL is corrupt from a bodged upgrade, everything Steam does makes it crash and, well, i don't think i can really be bothered to go find my Half-Life cd just to have this all happen again.

I can't play HL at all, be it on Steam or WON servers.

Well, that's my situation, but i have a few questions about Steam that i need answering. The first being, Why, when the monitor says it's idle, is Steam using 29.1kb/s of my bandwidth? Secondly, why, exactly, do i need to download Half-Life when it's already installed? Third, why does Steam need to cache the HL files at all?

Esuna, I think that it probably is a good idea, but the implementation is horrible. My poor housemate's system has crashed more times than I've ever seen a computer crash, and I ran a Win 95 machine once. Goes to show I guess

Man I swear Morrowind or the original version of Sin were less buggy and more optimised than Steam. This is a damn joke.

Steam should of been 3rd party program.
Valve should of created a simple form of upgrading steamids and steam servers for verification, rename folders, and thats it. But no they need to make this 3rd party program mandatory. Something so big should NEVER be mandatory nuff said.

No. Half life conects to the WON server, sends your CD key and gets back authentication information. The introduction of steam will mean that half life will connect to a Steam authentication server instead of a WON one - you do not need to have the steam software installed.

You don't get it...

The WON Servers (not your computer) are being shut down. Your computer won't be able to connect to them, thus you won't be able to validate your CD key, thus you won't be able to play on any servers. And if servers don't have players, they aren't going to stay up. This means you won't be able to play on the internet.

You DO need the Steam software installed, because it IS Half-Life now. Its not just a small client that's a plug-in or anything, it replaces your half-life installtion entirely (more than once actually). As others have pointed out, it may even delete your current half-life installation (or part of it).

Unless Valve changes their minds, the current way everybody does things with Half-Life is going away and hardly anyone (taking into consideration the vast majority of players don't read news sites) even knows about it yet...

I read the first page, and I don't give a crap if this has been posted already anyway, because I am **** off. I bought CS Retail , and on the side of the box were requirements my computer could handle. So for about 3 years much fun was had by all. But..wait..evil...clouds? What's this? WON is going down? STEAM is replacing it? *Checks the STEAM website, refreshes over 300 times, refreshes another 900 times to see the download page*. What...wait a second..what's this..?! Requirements have suddenly changed to play the game I bought. 1 ghz, 256 mb of RAM, and GODDAMNED BROADBAND?! I'm on a freaking 644 mhz, 128 megs of RAM (64 of that was donated by a friend), and CS and other mods are basically the pinnacle of technology that this computer can handle. AND NOW I CANT EVEN PLAY IT?! WHAT THE **** ARE THEY THINKING. How the hell could they screw over the entire dialup HL community, so people could INSTANT MESSAGE EACHOTHER AND PLAY CHECKERS.

Edit: I dialup on both my isps initially at 26k, and that drops down a bit.

There is a thread for petitioning on Steam.
It received 10,000 petitions since this morning.

http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/sig...ned.cgi?nosteam

Will you be a part of this?

Nope. I will not.

a) Online petitions are pointless, and have no actual way of making sure the people who sign it are serious.
b) The people who are signing it are not serious.
c) The people who are signing it are dragging a small matter way out of hand.

A small matter!? If Valve doesn't do something fast (and I doubt they will) this will mean the end of HL. Not that signing a petition will make any difference.
[edit] Yeah, I guess it would just signifigantly decrease the popularity of HL, not kill it off [/edit]
• OneEyedOneEyed Join Date: 2003-03-14 Member: 14493Members
Probably won't be the end of HL, but HL will loose a good 30-50% of its community. Due to 56k'rs, not enough Memory, or simply because they rebel against Steam.

And so it happened as prophesy, the wrath of those scorned by the injustice swelled and spilled forth onto the perpatrators and with capacity for violence that was borne in all of the wrathful they reduced the stronghold to rubble. And so there was none left to contain the vengful anger of the scorned and they turned their violence onto the world, and the earth was scorched, and the streets flowed with blood.

I beg to differ fam : P

HL2 is the end of HL, not steam. Get over yourselves guys, this is just simply not that big a deal. Writing an enterprise software distribution system is no joke - it's one of the things I do for a living. Give them more than a couple hours to work out the bugs of initial release. You have WEEKS before it means anything, and I'm sure if they are still getting the kinks out of it they simply won't just shut off the WONID servers (which, by the way, I have never seen an offical shutoff date for, just internet hysteria from a bunch of haetgirls- can someone point me to an official press release on that?).
• dr_ddr_d Join Date: 2003-03-28 Member: 14979Members
Of course it's not official, just like nothing about HL2 has been official. Just mindless dribble posted by hysterical gossip junkies.
