[SIZE=14]STEAM IS CRAP STEAM IS CRAP STEAM IS CRAP STEAM IS CRAP I HOPE SOMEONE SHUT THERE **** SERVICE DOWN PLEASE GOD SOMEONE SEND THEM A VIRUS AND PLEASE MAKE SURE IT DELETED THERE ENTIRE DATABASE !!! OMG I WOULD LOVE THAT OMGOMGOMGOM!!! FYOU STEAM FYOU VALVE AND MOST OF ALL FYOU GOOSEMAN FO RELEASING CS TO STEAM!!!! ROT IN HELL SCUMBAG RETARD!
My problem with steam is, first off, it's a hell of a lot more than I want, or was expecting.
As a whole, it does what? Ingame Browser, Messenger Service? Gee, thanks. I already have ASE and AIM, I don't need any more. When launched, steam uses 20MB of ram. I left it on all day today, and not only did it crash while I wasn't using my computer, it was sucking up 80MB of ram before I had to end task it.
Also, it had to do what? Add a bunch of files into some cache? I'm not even sure, it's **** annoying. I don't want auto patching, especially from Steam servers. I'm not going to pay $9.99 a month for HL2 when it comes out, and I may not buy it at all if I need to put up with steam even while playing single player. Some people mentioned it allows alt-tabbing now, without killing sound and annoying mouse pointer? Is it by some chance that steam magically did this, and your general patch couldn't?
I wouldn't mind if Steam were some small TSR program, kinda like C-D I guess. What I do mind, is when I need to launch some buggy memory eating POS app, that does nothing productive for half-life to play a game I've been playing for five years. They could have initiated it with HL2, whatever, I dont care. I do care however, that steam is being forced down my throat, and I don't want to touch it with a 10 foot pole.
I'm not so certain I'll even buy HL2 now, I may very well move to UT2K4.
For posterity: http://www.ews.uiuc.edu/~hunsley/img/steamrelease.JPG
Why the hell does steam have ads when you already paid for half life? It's like ads showing on the tv guide channel on cable when you're already paying a monthly bill.
I had steam beta, and it was slow. I couldn't join any cs games, and steam crashed my computer too many time to count.
It seems it hasn't got much better. It's alarming that half life 2 may be avoided because of this steam powered crap that brings even powerful computers to their knees.
Theirs got to be a better way to stop piraters. Patches work fine as they are now, and I don't need auto patches, as I prefer bittorrent anyways.

I make my new account, get my 5-digit ID that ends in 666, and it starts converting my installation over...

I suggest we give Valve hell about this. A little digging through public records reveals a useful number to call Valve at and complain:
This is in the states (Washington, IIRC): 425-889-9642 To everybody who is torqued off at Valve, I suggest you call and file a formal complaint.
Note to moderators: This is publicly accessable information; they even list this number on their website.
The WON Servers (not your computer) are being shut down. Your computer won't be able to connect to them, thus you won't be able to validate your CD key, thus you won't be able to play on any servers. And if servers don't have players, they aren't going to stay up. This means you won't be able to play on the internet.
You DO need the Steam software installed, because it IS Half-Life now. Its not just a small client that's a plug-in or anything, it replaces your half-life installtion entirely (more than once actually). As others have pointed out, it may even delete your current half-life installation (or part of it).

Wasn't the plan to release a patch for Half-Life which makes it log in via Steam? I think the actual distribution client is optional.

I've been able to have 3 internet games with steam, 1 checkers game, 2 GO games. So. Damn. Cool.
