Meh... I wanted to see what all the fuss was about so the other day I did about 5mins of searching before I came across some cheating forums with the JensenNS cheat on it. DLed it, put it on, and got very very scared.
After finally sorting out the million options in the program, I jumped on some servers far away from my usual servers and tested to see how effective it was. It really helped with my skulking, keeping track of marines perfectly as I circle strafed em into oblivion, but I didn't really notice myself getting any more kills than usual as a marine... Lerking also became quite easy and you quickly realised the power of those lerk spikes.
Funny thing was that I began to notice patterns in the way the program worked, and changes in the way I moved. Just the fact that I was constantly facing my enemy instead of running and dodging a little before reaching them started to become obvious to me. The way I just stood there as a marine and blasted away the oncoming skulks instead of shooting them while backing off or strafing a bit, the way I ran towards aliens I was going to run, the way I kept track of JP marines as I flew around as lerk... It all became obvious signs of my cheating (in my eyes).
And then... I started to notice other people following the same patterns... One or two players on each server I tried this out on all followed the exact same behaviour patterns. When specifically hunting them down, It'd feel like I was attacking a mirror image of myself in the way they fought (obviously the looked different, but they didn't play different). Now I know leet and I have seen leet, leet players still have some fear and show some caution. Leet players don't hump the armour till they are full on ammo, because even leet players die often. However cheating players don't do any of that, and I started to notice differences between players who were doing equally well on the server where some of them were quite obviously cheating and others were just quite good.
As I toured various servers, there would almost <b>always</b> be atleast 1-3 people who seemed like they were cheating on the server. Not only that but I often gained the impression that they as quickly cottoned on to my cheating as I did to theirs. Not so much anything solid that I could present as proof, but playing with or against these guys would certainly "feel" different. I know a lot of this could just be my over-active imagination, but I really do think I notice a change in their general attitudes and playing styles while near me as soon as I started doing h4x-like things that they can see...
I ended my little tour of duty back in my own country's (New Zealand) servers. I had formed several cheating suspects in my mind about some of the really good players back home, and I wanted to see if I could 'sense' the whole cheating thing in them too. As it turns out about half of the suspects did signal these alarm bells in my head, while many others quickly showed themselves to be true players. I'm not saying they definately cheat, only that my suspicion of them has greatly heightened. As long as I'm relying soley on instinct I can't and wont accuse anybody specifically.
On a personal level, I have to agree with Catpoker, cheating really is boring. It saps the fun out of the game like you wouldn't believe. Knowledge of this makes me feel a bit more comfortable playing against cheaters because I know that they aren't having very much fun and that they really are just sad little people desparate to reach the top of the score board so they can get some much-needed attention. I've had my cheating experience and I don't really feel like going back there. But I feel I have learnt a lot from it. I'd suggest you do the same. Walk in their shoes for a day, so that you'll hopefully also gain a bit more insight into how the cheats work and so you can be a bit more sure of yourself when you cry out "CHEAT!" ingame.
And for the record, without cheating I have killed squads of 3 or 4 marines and lived, and I have killed 2 or 3 aliens at once too. During our last clan praccy I manage to lmg 2 skulks, pistol another and knife the fourth simply because they all attacked the other defenders or the buildings. However these are isolated incidents, and I am by no means consistent with these results. If you wanna pick a cheater, make sure you keep an eye on him for a while. One or two lucky encounters does not make a cheater.

I think that was an unwise statement to make. Now if everyone goes out and tries cheats for a day, do you realise how many cheats will be around? You should also contemplate how many people had their games ruined by your own 'cheating study'. I understand where your coming from with regards to curiosity about how they work and how effective they are, but in the end you have just added to the problem.
If your going to test cheats out. Get a server of your own, get some test subjects together and check them out AWAY from the public servers. You should also realise that if any remnants of those cheat files show up on servers that may use cheat protection in the future, you may well be banned for having installed these cheats in the past.
now that this subject has been somewhat resurrected, i'll put in my two cents:
from my expierience of servers on Counter-Strike, VAC does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING against somebody determined to cheat. Yes, it may stop that annoying 7 year old from pwning you, but anybody with 15 seconds of internet time spent on it found a way around VAC. also, my impression is that vac is updated about every three weeks. by an undedicated team of adults that do it for the money.
welcome to Cheating-Death. Run by a team that updates WHENEVER there is a new problem found and they make a way to counter it, cd stops the problem at its source, the client's computer. If your server gets a drastic drop in player if you change over to cd, that's due to two reasons: 1) People are a little slow getting cd, give them some time and credit... OR OR OR OR 2) The people you lost were cheaters, and good riddance to those who are as pesky as cockroaches and appear to be becoming as numerous.
My comment about people who "can't" run cd. My 16 year old sister is a complete pothead loser, is going to repeat a school grade, and can EASILY INSTALL AND RUN Cheating-Death. Now I understand that there MAY be some compatibility problems for a user or two, with so many drivers that aren't limited or written to certain standards, that's bound to happen. Either update drivers, or actually find a place to post about your problems in a CONSTRUCTIVE way and even I will try to help you through your issues.
Computer too slow to run CD? A small note to you: CD isn't explorer.exe. it takes a little over 4mb to run in your ram. and for god's sake, if it reduced your fps to an unplayable level, it's time to stop playing on the computer that is as old as you. and your fps will suck then anyway. If you have an fps problem and your computer DOESN'T suck, please feel free to stick my foot in my mouth for me please.
My final note: a good server operator realizes two things 1) Running cheating death, vac, unpopular cheat stopper, or any combination of the three will not stop cheating, just reduce it drastically 2) Admins are your Police, your Swat Team, your Judge and Jury. The more trusted and worthy admins you have on your server(s), the less likely you are to have cheating problems. Just make it clear to your admins that they play on your server with a RESPONSIBILITY, they are there to help the server play smoothly, not to use admin_godmode or ban people who kill you. If you do such things, you ruin the gameplay in ways that cheaters can't even reach.
Well, my two cents has hit the table. I'm mentally broke for awhile, so i'm gonna watch inuyasha after playing some Natural Selection.
[note] If you want proof that vac sucks and Cheating Death is at least ten times better, read the forums of and ask the players on www.steakeater.net about cheating, the server play, and Cheating Death implementation. When i used to play counterstrike, cd on this server was a GODSEND, and the admins agreed. Verbose, feel free to back me up if you have such expieriences. [/note]
From what I have heard, the anti-wh implementation makes people behind enteties invisible, ie: you will not be able to see a skulk that is behind a resource tower. Can anyone confirm?
That is as far as I am concerned the only reason why it is not on FR31 at the moment.

I would say that cheating isnt THAT big problem but its there dude, at some level. But 1.1 > cheaters. It will be signficantly lower with servers that have VAC enabled & CD. Sure you get frustrated when someone is cheating & even admits it, but you'll get over it with time.
By teh way, VAC is constantly getting small upgrades (that download automatically) there is VERY few cheats/hacks that can bypass VAC and alot of cheats/hacks get caugth but even if some cheats/hacks bypass VAC, they get blocked by CD. VAC+CD = cheaters pwned.

When you have a jetpack, and tap the jump button, the amount of upwards thrust you get varies with your framerate. If you have a particularly high framerate, you can tap the jump button slowly, at a rate that allows the fuel to regenerate itself, and still create enough thrust to keep you in the air. Effectively you can stay airborne forever. On the other hand if you have a framerate of about 20 or less, you can barely create enough thrust to get yourself off the floor.
Build speed also varies in the same way, with people on higher framerates able to build structures faster. The building speed isnt as big an issue.
Not only VAC will be introduced to NS 1.1. The issue with framerates and build speed, jet pack fuel will as well be fixed say the mighty Flayra. But you can hardly claim it cheating to make your well capable machine run at 100 fps!

It seems to me that I have heard that OGC had an anti CD hack. The CD client sends a message to the CD server that says "yes, I have CD installed". OGC send a fake message to the CD server and the server thought that the player has the client on his computer. I think CD countered it now but remember that such things can still happen.
If you want to remove cheating go to a lan, otherwise you are out of luck until Microsoft turns out computers into big consoles (read the article in PCG I am far too lazy to link you to it).
read through some of the posts but i can tell that most people seem to not know what theyre talking about and are either a) asking relevant questions or b) spouting crap
basically, CD uses minimal client side resources and takes up virtually nothing on the server its a very good program to have on the side, VAC stops some of the ones CD doesnt, and vice versa.
Sue'ing the cheat makers . yeh go name some and where they live ..? you cant sue someone by alias
anti-cheat will always be one step behind, some people dont seem to realise that. Anti-cheat is created to stop current cheats, not tomorrows cheats. The only way to get anti-cheat close to the level of cheats is to find and convert the people making the cheats

There's also the grey zone of cheating that no one can do a lot about: "elite" configz0rs and scripters. What are you supposed to do versus a guy that uses bunny hop scripts? Or pistol scripts? Or rate scripts? You can only cheat along with them or eat it.
I'll set up a 100 mbit NS server, 16 players soon. It will hopefully be <b>99% cheat free</b>, because I'm going to make only "slots" on the server. This means that people which want to play there, has to register (on my website) and get a adminmod account from me (level 0 access) In that case, people have to use 1 WONID and 1 nick. I'll try to make a community where everyone know eachother.
This means: <ul> <li>few cheaters <li>No stubborn noobs (allthough beginners which are not ignorant are welcome) <li>No lamers <li>Everyone knows eachother </ul>
Cheating deaths rocks; the only problem is that few boder to download the client, so alot of CD servers stands empty.

Honestly, CD should be universal.
99% of cheaters aren't even slightly code versed. They're script kiddies who haven't seen a line of code in their lives. CD would eliminate them all if it was universal, so the number of cheaters would be lowered, and we could ban the WONID of the rest.
And if you tell me you can't manage to download or install CD, do me a favour. Never call me for Technical Support, or I'll report you as a 1D10T error.

When i used to play counterstrike, cd on this server was a GODSEND, and the admins agreed. Verbose, feel free to back me up if you have such expieriences. [/note]
That is as far as I am concerned the only reason why it is not on FR31 at the moment.

I reported this problem to hullu a while a go. He said it has been fixed with 2.9.0.1.

Erm, as far as I am informed, CD and VAC are mutually exclusive. Well, it's VAC that doesnt like C-D to be precise. So even if it would be really cool to run them together, you cant <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
Would that mean people with 30fps build slower and have less JP?
Anybody care to enlighten me?

Physics and apparently certain other areas of the game are influenced by your framerate, it's probably a result of HL using code from the Quake 1 engine, which also had framerate dependant physics.
I thought that Natural Selection had actually based itself on that! I mean all those see through walls blips that aliens have surely must've gotten put it as a big pisstake of CS's wallhack cheats?
I've actually encountered this numerous times. I wondered how this chap kept doing it and why he jumped in such a strange (yet useful for avoiding skulks) way. Now I know. <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->

Some people can do it for long periods of time with out scripts. It's all in the timing. Then there are the kiddies with their scripts. It's basically impossible to tell who uses them, and who's just got the timing down perfectly.

Hello me <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> Yep _ I have about 20-30 FPS ingame, except around active phasegates in which case it literally drops to 4. Or when people run around near me with their flashlights on. I played one hilarous map called MissileCommand_Final or something similar. It involves kharaa unbelievably high above Frontiersmen all in one room. You can drop down as a skulk and not splatter when you hit ground some 10 seconds later. Anyhoo, Marines always get JPs and fly up then take out Kharaa hives. Except me. My Jp would ALWAYS run out of fuel before I could reach solid platforms above me - I can get to one stage above, but not to Kharaa hives. And now I know why. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
A wall-hack would benefit as the blips generally lag....... alot, and often the marine pops out before the blip does for me <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
I've had it in reverse - with motion tracking on I've had aliens round a corner while their motion circle still registers them as ... around that corner (other side). <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> At least I know to start shooting a second or so before that blip <b>should</b> come into view.

try looking neither up or down but straight into the nearest wall, you will get more fps and jp fuel, maybe it will be enough for you to get high enough.... i must do it too <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
The CD client sends a message to the CD server that says "yes, I have CD installed".
OGC send a fake message to the CD server and the server thought that the player has the client on his computer.
I think CD countered it now but remember that such things can still happen.
basically, CD uses minimal client side resources and takes up virtually nothing on the server its a very good program to have on the side, VAC stops some of the ones CD doesnt, and vice versa.
Sue'ing the cheat makers . yeh go name some and where they live ..? you cant sue someone by alias
anti-cheat will always be one step behind, some people dont seem to realise that. Anti-cheat is created to stop current cheats, not tomorrows cheats. The only way to get anti-cheat close to the level of cheats is to find and convert the people making the cheats
ah well, thats the lowdown .
Btw I have an older computer and have no problems running CD. 800 Athlon and also play on a laptop with CD at 1 gig athlon.

to be precise, anticheat really only stops yesterday cheats, not even todays cheats <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
It will hopefully be <b>99% cheat free</b>, because I'm going to make only "slots" on the server.
This means that people which want to play there, has to register (on my website) and get a adminmod account from me (level 0 access)
In that case, people have to use 1 WONID and 1 nick. I'll try to make a community where everyone know eachother.
This means:
<ul>
<li>few cheaters
<li>No stubborn noobs (allthough beginners which are not ignorant are welcome)
<li>No lamers
<li>Everyone knows eachother
</ul>
Cheating deaths rocks; the only problem is that few boder to download the client, so alot of CD servers stands empty.
