Friendly Fire

Insert description here
A couple of days ago on IRC I asked Flayra if he was going to include an option to toggle Friendly Fire in Pub mode, he said he wasn't going to unless there was a demand for it.

How many of you would consider FF on for Pub mode good?
And how many of you would consider it a bad thing?

I'd like it because it would allow one to transfer from Pub to tourney mode much easier, but you'd also have to deal with a worse variety of griefer.

I support a server variable for friendly fire.

I think it should be an option. As all options such as this are, they come with consequences. I really think such things should be let up to the server operator.

i support it too! As long as people know its FF .

    i concur with coil

i would like it to help practice with my clan on our server, and the option to turn it off with adminmod privliges (server variable) for when there are annoying people abusing it.

What Flay told me was that he doesn't want some random n00b to go on a FF On server and get TK'd repeatedly for not following orders or not knowing how to build, and thus never play NS again(Although that kinda stuff happens in CS and it's popular as hell so I dunno).

i have no problems with FF being on, as long as its noted well enough so people realize its on.
  • FrothybeverageFrothybeverage Join Date: 2003-02-15 Member: 13593Members
I think if they did put FF on, they'd have to tweak it so that it only affected players(So some random n00b couldn't shoot a Spawn portal, and so that WOL's don't obliterate themselves[as much as I hate WOL's and Turret Farms]), but people could still be shot by their teams Turrets/OC

Sure, I think if people would like it then it would be a good option, of course, one can always choose to play on servers without friendly fire if they want to do so.

FF Off for pubs is a great idea.. You "block shots" but don't kill your teammates while shooting frantically. It's for the best, really.

problem with friendly fire on pubs is people will abuse it, someone gets in someones way, steals a kill, accidentally shoots a teammate etc can cause people to exact revenge and this can escalate and just become ridiculous. For those reasons i dont support the idea.
  • SirusSirus Join Date: 2002-11-13 Member: 8466Members, NS1 Playtester, Constellation
If it becomes a problem then the admin can turn it off. If not, he believes its a non-issue, and you should probably high-tail it out of there anyways.

I've never played a FF enabled CS pub game without some lamer ruining it. If it's not the guy who shoots right near and all around you like some knifethrower at a circus (a vision impared circus knife thrower, 'cause he don't always miss), it's the fool who just kills his team-mates everyother round, or the guy who knifes every teammate once every round just for kicks and giggles. I've also been kicked from many a server for retaliating with lethal force.

Short answer: No. For the love of god, no.

Stupid enough getting killed by own blabblers.

But its so funny to see... Along with seeing a fade kill himself with acid rocket, since it does 1-3 dmg in friendly fire.

Getting killed is always your fault though...

while I think the more mature NS community would appreciate it, and I would like it, there are a lot of players who do not respect team play and will therefore ruin the game for a lot of people.

therefore, I do not wish FF on any server except clan matches.
  • babygirlbabygirl Join Date: 2003-01-16 Member: 12378Members
I vote put it in. Really, only a small number of servers would probably use it, so it's not like most of you that don't like FF have anything to worry about. There's no harm in leaving it up to the server admins - heck, if they have FF on, they know what they're getting in to. Admin mod plug-ins would be made overnight to handle griefers. It's not really that bad an issue. =P

I'd really LOVE to see an 'armor only' friendly fire option which would make it so that armor only would be damaged by friendly fire. That way any armor strippers wouldn't really screw up the game since the armor would be easily replaced by a welder.

    Regards,

    Savant

I heavily support a server-side variable, at least. I know a number of people who don't want to deal with the hassle of setting up a Tournament-mode game, but still want to have FF turned on for the 'realism' factor.

For those concerned about a newbie accidentally joining a server with FF turned on... why not just add in a new section to the HUD? An icon somewhere, that when 'lit' tells you that FF is on. Would stop people from asking if the server is set to FF-On, and give people a heads-up that they need to watch their fire, as the FriendlyFire™ system has been disabled.

Perhaps for lamers, add in a 'half-FF' mode as well. You can shoot your teammates and do damage, but you cannot hurt your own structures. Prevent the lamer from shooting the IPs and other investments down, because you won't give them an HA/HMG for the fifth time in three minutes, or give them a shotgun out of the starting 100RP.

I'd be for adding in the auto-kick.One 'warning' kill, and then a kick and five/ten minute tempban (too short for a lamer to really bother with changing their WONID, but long enough to be a punishment).
Alternately, the first kill has a 0% chance of kick/tempban. The warning. Second kill has a 25-50% chance. Third has a 75% chance. Fourth has a 90% chance. Can also set an 'expiry' time, so they go down a 'kill level' after a certain amount of time without having killed anyone.. account for the 'oops, sorry' factor.
As a corollary, count ALL the damage they do to teammates. When this adds up to enough to have killed a base Marine, count it as a 'kill' and warn them (or boot them). This stops team-wounders, or at least greatly hampers their ability to be idiots. It also gives newbies who can't aim a 'hint' to find a FF-Off server to play on.

Additionally, before kicking them for TKing, 'kill' them so if a Marine with a GL 'accidentally' blows away four teammates at once and hits the auto-kickban, that 33RP weapon isn't lost. But then.. why would you GIVE someone a weapon that costs that much, if they didn't know how to use it?

(I'd also considered a version of FF that does the damage back to *you* when you shoot a teammate, but this would only encourage the lamers to stand in front of teammates a lot more.. including jumping out in front of them as they're about to fire. Decided it wouldn't be a good idea, put it here to warn anyone else that might consider it.)

I honestly don't see FF-On games as taking over the FF-Off standard, but it would be good to have the OPTION to play with FF-On, if the serv-op wants it on.
Would it REALLY be that much work to modify the current tourney FF into a serverside variable? Or to set up a secondary FF mode that masks team structures away from the FF damage, while needing Marines to watch their fire between each other? Would it be hard to put in an icon on the HUD that appears for a given FF mode?

Heck, can already think of one.. 'FF' in a solid blue circle for full-FF, half a solid blue circle for teammate-only FF, and not there for standard FF-Off NS. Toss it in the lower right, everyone's happy.

I don't see whats wrong with giving the server operater the option. Having lamers in a FF server is a risk you take by playing in them. Any good admined server should be fine. You don't like lamers ruining FF games? then dont play on those servers. It's really that simple. It should be an option that can be decided upon by the server operator, and yes i do agree with some sort of way for people to know its on.

ff aint so bad ... just depending on the level of players.. I can see it now.. bunch of retards just shooting each other just for the hell of it ... I think they should add in spell check in the next 1.1 update =P.

    YES YES YES!!!

This would make comms a LOT more carefula bout giving out big guns, cos if the marines run around like headless chickens, and kill each other, no more big gun for you!

On the other hand, it *can* cause a problem, as in CWs if someone shoots someone by accident, there is no revenge thing(normally ) However, in pubs there could be this.

I dunno how to go about structures, cos one of the BEST features in CWs is that you can strafe round a structure and get marines to shoot the **** out of it, while you biut it, and if it is something like an arms lab, it is a BIG target and expensive, so upto 400 damage would be done to it by the marines alone.

Obviously if the damage to buildings was on, lamers galor, shooting/knifing IPs, or knifing the comm chair to get that annoying alert up to the comm, etc

For aliens, it should NOT affect the hive, well, thats obvious why.

What would be annoying is the whole temptation to bite/para your teammates and possibly the gorge

Also an OK skulk is SO fast and manuverable that it can confuse a fade, I know cos in a CW, when it was basiclly won(we were hunting the last guy) I was biting a fade, and he was on full HP, circle strafing and jumping and dodging etc, i actually managed to kill him........ and he had hit me ONCE with claws and a few splashes of acid, there is a problem there, skulks are ****ing fast and annoying buggers if they wanna TK you(trust me, we mess around in practices sometimes )

Overall I think it is a good thing and I would like it, but it would have to be an instant variable and would have to be on well admined servers, as the possiblity for damage is a LOT higher than any other mods, however I do think many people WOULD like it, and therefore I am in favour of it.

At the very least make it so that you can't vote FF on. I suppose it would be ok on a server with vigilant admins, so if it can be set by the server and only the server... I suppose. I'm also sick of the "FF ON" "FF OFF" "FF ON" "FF OFF" "FF ON" "FF OFF" kinda games.

There isn't a simple server-side cvar for friendly fire? Really?

I'm all for putting it in. Kinda the same as why I prefer C++ to Java - maybe FF lets you shoot yourself in the foor but at least you can shoot yourself in the foot if you really want to

I'd vote for a server side option for it. Would train people not to just fire into the backs of thier teammates wasting ammo and not hitting alians.

Possibly it shouldn't affect buildings though.
