Game won't save

When I try to save the game, nothing happens, it just exits thew menu and returns to the game. If I try to save again, the game crashes with the message "failed to load save data. Try again: YES/NO" and I'm forced to close the game down with Task Manager. I've looked through the files and there is no SNAppData folder. I created the folder but it didn't make any difference. Can anyone offer a solution?

Sounds like a permissions or filesystem issue. Try running a chkdsk on your drive, then uninstall / reinstall Subnautica if that doesn't help. Oh, and before all that, try restarting the computer, of course.

I've done all those things already. Didn't make any difference.

Location for SNAppData should be \Steam\steamapps\common\Subnautica\SnAppData
Not sure why it's not working. You do have Windows up-to-date, right?

Yeah windows is up to date. I didn't buy Subnautica through Steam. I got it from the Oculus store, so the directory is Oculus\software\software\subnautica. In that directory there are only 4 folders, those being: "2017-05-26_015044"; "Asset_Bundles"; "SNUnmanaged_Data"; "Subnautica_Data".

Post Subnautica_Data\output_log.txt (if it exists) as well as whatever's in "2017-05-26_015044" (any folder with a date like that is a debug crash folder - usually crashes are output to the previously mentioned output_log.txt, but sometimes in a severe crash it's in a dated folder).

    TL;DR, give us:
    1) Subnautica_Data\output_log.txt
    2) Whatever's in "2017-05-26_015044"
    also
    3) Fire up dxdiag and hit "save all information" and post that as well.
might want to use Google Drive or Dropbox's sharing link thing (upload, make it viewable with a link, and post the link)

Mph. I can't make sense of exactly what's going on. @nesrak1 , can you parse that log? I kind of get that there are errors but nothing sticks out as the prime suspect.

I don't know what would be causing this. Rendertextures are basically textures that come from a different source rather than like a png or something. Sometimes they are generated. Right now, it's saying that the texture has no width or height, and I'd assume those were constant sizes, so tbh I don't know what would cause this.

Since it seems to be a texture issue I thought it might have something to do with running the game in VR. I thought it might be prudent to try running in desktop mode and see if I could create a save then. However the game won't run in desktop mode. It crashes right out the gate.

Try running in desktop mode and posting the output_log.txt (and check the dated folders, if there's anew one that has contents, the log might be in there since it's crashing pretty early).

I posted this in the Subnautica Discord Server (subnautica-chat channel)

If you join, change the notification settings for Subnautica server (drop-down beside "Subnautica (Official)" in the upper-left) so you're only notified on @mentions (people are always talking so you don't want it notifying every time someone says something)

Ok, turn on your debug console, exit the prawn suit, and use the command
    warpme

    .

Then, find your PRAWN (it will stop falling shortly after you exit), and use the commands
    oxygen

    and
    item 514

Equip the terraformer, then use Shift+Right-click to get down to your PRAWN, leaving room to land and get your PRAWN through the tunnel (make yourself PRAWN jet thrust recovery points on the way down).

Get your PRAWN up & out, and settled in a comfy spot.

    Use
    oxygen

to turn O2 use back on.

    Save

Clear the contents of your \Steamapps\common\Subnautica\SNAppData\SavedGames\slot00xx\CompiledOctreesCache folder to reset your terrain. (the xx is whatever number your saved game is in, check the screenshot.jpg if you're not sure which). If doing this worries you, just move the files to a temporary location in a folder on your Desktop to be safe.
