What if Subnautica had like desk figurines?

I saw something like this on a Subnautica YouTube video, and someone suggested that what if Subnautica had merchandise where we could buy a things like small figurines, or models of stuff in the game and put it on our desks? He suggested that having a lifepod on his desk would be awesome.

It's a nice possibility seeing as how there is already a plushy and Aurora Model in-game, however I do not see this as something implemented until after the 1.0 release.

So.... looking back now I realize you were talking about physical merchandise in our world. Originally I thought you meant little DLC figures to craft for our bases like the Jack Septiceye or the Gorge plushy.
    :s
    Embarrassing...

A while back, I e-mailed Charlie Cleveland about possible licensing for collectibles, but haven't heard back from him yet. Maybe post-V1.0. :)

I remember when they partnered with some charity to bring fresh drinking water to African villages, and they were offering a sweet Subnautica water bottle. I didn't order one though, not because I wasn't for the charity but instead I didn't trust their payment system. :frowning:

However, if UWE ever decided to make and sell official merchandise, I would totally be interested in buying stuff. @SubnauticaMarketingTeam, if you make six-inch Aurora die-cast ships, or Crashfish plushies, I am interested in buying them!

EDIT: When I was searching for Cutefish entries for another post I made, I came across a site called RedBubble that is selling Subnautica inspired merchandise. While I like the stuff they are offering, I am concerned - are they making a profit from UWE's hard work? @ChrisFo Can you have this looked into? If it's legal then I'm fine with it, but if they are monetizing Subnautica without sharing the profits, then they are effectively stealing money from UWE... :disappointed:

Welcome to the dark side, @Tarkannen.

It's possible to technically duck IP licensing using loopholes. One of the most popular is to claim that the work is either "inspired by" or "an homage to" the original work. There have been hundreds of IP lawsuit challenges over the last decade or so because of work like this. Those knockoff Coach bags? As long as the trademark double-C is not identical to the actual Coach trademark, the manufacturer can get away with saying it's an "homage" work, and thus exempt from IP licensing. It's dancing on a razor blade, but it's profitable enough that people do it by the busload.

Personally, I find it reprehensible. If someone pours their creativity and effort into something, I shouldn't be able to make something that lifts from it without their direct permission. So, yeah, I could probably make perfectly-legal "inspired by" merchandise and not have to pay a cent to UWE. However, as I firmly believe that people who do that should be kicked in the teeth by a mule, my personal ethics and severe pain aversion dictate that I won't do that even if it is quote-unquote "legal."

    However...

These turkeys seem to be using actual Subnautica concept art and in-game assets. No modification, no re-imagining or "inspiration." Just copy and paste. And that, dearies, is quite illegal. @Obraxis, @Flayra, and @Foxy...someone might want to get the lawyer on the horn to knock out a quick C&D letter.

https://www.redbubble.com/de/people/unknownworlds and https://www.redbubble.com/shop/subnautica are the official UWE and Subnautica shops. The devs know that, its totally legal and they have their own account there. The devs want to sell more things post V1.0. For example T-Shirts and other nice things are planned

And about Desk figurines: This guy made some models himself http://www.subnautica.keepfree.de/Subnautica/Subnautica.html
Other people also made some plushies. I dont think, UWE will make some models, but it would be great. Maybe they will do some later :)

Ohhh, that's swell! I'm glad to see we have official merchandise and that UWE is getting their fair share of profits. The reason I was concerned was the RedBubble site didn't seem official, but I'm glad that they actually are.

That's a relief! Am I going blind, or does the linked page not say that it's an official site?

Thanks for the info, @ChrisFo!

I guess the only way to find out is to click "Store" at the top of the page here and see where that takes you (which is what I had to do to check if it was legit, but by that time the question had already been answered by @ChrisFo ).

Man, I just had a mini heart attack because I bought like 4 shirts from this site, because I wanted to support UWE.

If it turned out to be some knock-off site, I may have written a strongly worded email to @Redbubble.

    Glad that's cleared up.

A strongly-worded email from @Skope? I don't know whether that'd be considered murder or manslaughter, because I'm pretty sure the reader's head would just melt like that guy in the finale of Raiders...
