    The main 3 are;
    1. Make sure the game is high priority.
    2. Make sure PCI link state is set to "off".
    3. Turn performance options to "best performance".

@EnglishInfidel - could you please explain how to carry out the above steps.

    Thank you :)

@EnglishInfidel Can you edit the part about defragging to include the warning that SSDs shouldn't be defragged at all (and don't need to be)? Other than that, you should make a new topic, this is all very useful info to have out there.

    Of course, very good point.

Hi. I am typing this from my hospital bed whilst I drink soup through a straw. It was an interesting "conversation" I had with that Hell's Angel. I'll never forget his name - all I need to do is look in the mirror and see the carving.

Dammit Myrm, you told me you were a trained professional!

So everyone cuts the throat of the people who ask if the game will be multiplayer because they can't read a post but no one here does the same thing? The Devs themselves have stated they are using the Unity Engine to power their game, a gaming Engine which is NOT meant to be doing what they are doing with it.

While there is room for improvement in the performance area, you are never going to be lag free, you are never going to get 120fps every second of every game minute. Its not going to happen. Until they use an Engine powerful enough Unity simply cannot handle the game.

Some of the high end systems that appear to lag use GTX cards which despite what people think, are a pretty shitty card and tend to cause a lot of lag issues. Dota 2 is a great example of users trying to use a GTX card. But whether your using a toaster or a high end rig, the game will only be improved to a certain point, beyond that, nothing is going to change.

I get over 60 FPS with a GTX 950. It's not that bad really. It's not perfect 100% of the time but for the most part it's only noticeable when I am traveling to places with a lot of objects to load, and even then it's just a second or two of slight stutters.

Yeah they really aren't bad at all.

I am actually looking to upgrade. Always looking for suggestions as I am wanting to get into VR, which according to NVIDIA I need a minimum of a GTX970. Kinda sucks because I bought that card a year ago and that was a dumb idea considering newer cards over perform what I am attempting.

I got a GTX-1060 (single fan) with 6GB for $189.00 dollars on clearance at my local Best Buy about two weeks ago.
(was $259.99 originally, and was marked down 30%)

You should check out your local Big-brand Electronic stores and see if you can get a deal of some kind in their clearance sections.

I will be sure to check out if I can find something along those lines. I usually use NewEgg.

Agreed. A lot of my issues seem to stem from objects populating causing the stuttering.

Regarding the FPS and the stuttering, I don't have a problem with it; I guess what I'm saying is it doesn't annoy me when my game stutters because I do let's face it have a Very LOW END PC but I can still play Subnautica albeit a little bit unstable at times, I have to agree with those who defended the devs here because they are doing what is supposedly impossible on the unity engine. I guess I'll have to wait until I get a better rig, anyway as soon as you have paid for the game Via steam it remains on your steam account permanently doesn't it?

It does, however you can return a purchase as long as you don't play beyond 2 hours. It also has a set time frame, but I forget the exact length of time.

    Two weeks I do believe.

People keep saying Subnautica isn't supposed to be possible on Unity. How, exactly? I'm curious what the supposed limitations of Unity were that UWE is breaking through.

Probably fueled by the thing that Unity out of the box was designed for closed off environments and hallways. It doesn't have proper "big open world" elements by default, stuff like Level of Detail models, texture down scaling, loading and unloading of assets not in VIS (visible to player), VIS calculations not optimized for large open worlds.

However, it does have that stuff when using plugins/addons. Not entirely sure if those are as efficient as can be though, compared to inengine low level code

My 6-month old laptop died yesterday. It was great playing SN on it as it has a Nvidia GTX980 8GB card in it (though I still get some stutters in SN). So whislt I am waiting for it to get repaired I have fallen back on my old laptop which hs a GTX680 in it. Not so good as my main one but I can still play pretty high end games on it.

Look at this custom made laptop I have found: it has two graphics cards!!!

Chassis & Display Vortex Series: 17.3" Matte Full HD IPS LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
    Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-7700k (4.2GHz) 8MB Cache
    Memory (RAM) 64GB HyperX IMPACT 2400MHz SODIMM DDR4 (4 x 16GB)
    Graphics Card 2 x NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1080 - 8.0GB GDDR5 Video RAM - DX 12.1, G-SYNC
    1st drive M.2 SSD Drive 1TB INTEL® 600p M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (upto 1800MB/sR | 560MB/sW) (Win 10 64-bit)
2nd Hard Disk 500GB SERIAL ATA III 2.5" HARD DRIVE WITH 32MB CACHE (7,200rpm)

Geez... that probably isn't cheap either.
