PSA: you all know you swim faster with your gear holstered, right?

Just checking, in my experience you swim much faster with your gear (knife, etc) stowed. On land, you can just sprint and it temporarily holsters.

Yeah, that's a handy bit of information to have. Took me a few hours... Or rather... UPDATES... To figure that out.

It's why I always put my knife / flashlight away when fleeing Stalkers after I grabbed what I wanted. ^^

Yeah, I noticed pretty early on in playing

....but...but... CSGO taught me that you always run faster with a knife out :(

Took me like 20 minutes or so (IIRC, but a non-trivial amount of going up to the surface for oxygen before I should have had to) before I realized.

Also the more junk you have in your inventory/equipped (extra tanks, etc) the slower you swim.

Unfortunately, Swim Charge fins only charge devices while they're in hand.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong but don't you swim much faster when swimming on the surface?

Yes, that is true also. Both were glorious revelations when discovered.

It's also very smart to put ones knife away while exploring in the Kelp Forests, having it out makes the Stalkers a whole bunch more aggressive.
(shiny metal things turn them on)

Took me two plays through's to realize that.

I figured out the swim-speed-reduction thing early on though.

Yes, I always hide the thing, I do it since maybe my very first play through. I used to watch one youtuber and I was sooo angry, because he would just keep the tools in hand. I couldn't take it, noooo! :D

Thanks for confirming this. I assumed this was the case but couldnt really tell.

Doesn't it tell you this with a pop up at some point?
I don't remember, but I've always known this since first playing.

Mind you, I habitually holster weapons in every game I'm able to, just for immersion. There's nothing more stupid than talking to an NPC giving you a task and you're pointing a gun in their face the whole time.

That's the reason I made this post; I saw someone swimming around on YouTube with their knife in hand.

Oh, here's one. I wouldn't push it, but don't assume that when you hit 0 Oxygen you'll die immediately. You hit 0, and the screen fades to black, and then you die. If you're almost at the surface, keep pushing.

I just assumed it because I play way too much Skyrim and having weapons out slows you down.

This is where the air bladder is especially helpful (faster ascent, slightly, also, inflate it, then stow it, or it pulls ~3 seconds of O2 to inflate).

As well: be sure you are pointed exactly straight up from the moment you start ascending -- any slight angle will add precious seconds to your surfacing time (or even many seconds, if you're decked out with O2 tanks and mad deep).

One of the few things in gaming that gives me an actual rush. Only just making it as the screen fades to complete black. Phew.

You can make it after. You have ~2-3 seconds. Makes it tricky if you're aiming for a Seamoth / Cyclops to jump aboard ("c'mon, c'mon" click-click-click {Wilhelm scream})

After 308 hours of gameplay.... I still hadn't figured that out.

You have about Three (3) more seconds after the screen goes black.

I guess it represents the fact that at that point, you are gasping for breath as you pass out and still grasping for straws to reach the surface or your submersible.
