Can we get a real antialiasing?

Seriously? Ok I wanted to make this topic in a long time, by "real" I mean MSAA not post processing ****.

This may not seem to you like the highest priority thing but it is VERY important to stay graphically apealing against other games that all have it.

Tbf NS2 still has its pretty cool look and successful art style, it's WASTED by the lack of proper AA.

Because when you do something as simple as looking around your eyes are welcomed with the huge GLITTERING NOISE of aliasing interacting with lights,

when standing still its not any better since you cant see clearly past 20 METERS away and everything looks like ****.

FXAA is NOT AN OPTION, adds huge input lag, blurrs everything even that was not aliased to begin with making even harder to see the distance, while not really fixing the glitter.

So PLEASE fix this! it's 2016 antialiasing is a staple in videogames even more so in a competitive FPS and this game has all the ingredients to look great except this.
In its current state I swear I can feel the EYE CANCER showing up whenever my cursor hovers in the general direction of the NS2 icon on my desktop.

I know @McGlaspie has mentioned a few times he'd like to get SMAA in as a higher-quality replacement for FXAA, just can't find the time to do it. :(

Personally, I'd like to see TXAA implemented... though I'm not sure what's possible when we're stuck in DX9-land... (this area is not my forte.) :( I'm pretty sure MSAA is out for DX9, though. :(

@BeigeAlert hows that DX11 test coming along, still in test mode after all these years?

While not being an expert on the subject I can guarantee I've played at least a few DX9 games which had FULL SUPPORT for x16 antialiasing, a few example off the top of my head being Cs:Go and Crysis 1.

How is this remotely related to antialiasing? Notice how this isn't called "the random reclamation thread".

Both those games use forward rendering, which can easily implement more antialiasing options... you can even force it in from your hardware options. NS2 uses deferred rendering, it's not so simple. :(

Damn. Is this confirmed for TXAA as well? Also would deferred rendering MSAA or TXAA work with Dx10 version of NS2?

    Ah. Ok.

Well, I was waiting to see what you'd find.. but here's what I know:

According to an Nvidia whitepaper, at 1920x1200 with a 480GTX (ew) it causes a delay under 1 ms
Pretty negligible (considering vsync can cause 16-32 ms)

If it comes down to dx12 or vulkan i think vulkan would be better choice.

I think most individuals would prefer vulkan as its not a windows 10 exclusive

This is sooooooo unimportant compared to other stuff thats actually fixable or desperatly needed. Scalable balance, A/V feedback overhaul, spec mode overhaul, replay system, team sponor map decals, customizable ui for streams, 64 bit for propper DLC (new Models)... asking for an specific type of AA when there is one is... distracting at best

the one "there is" is not actual antialiasing it's just a post processing crap filter, it's important to have a good looking game to appeal to casuals and ns2 could look pretty decent would it have proper AA else have to cope with the GLITTER VISUAL NOISE bullshit.

Yes. I'm honestly surprised we left the option in the menu.

Huh? What's wrong with it? I get better performance and a more "steady" seeming framerate with DX11.

It's extremely buggy for some people. I haven't actually tried it with my new build, but on my last build, it would cause a ~1/4 second hitch every single time I fired the shotgun.

FXAA does not add any significant amount of input lag, but I am not a fan of the blurring. I love the art in NS2, the last thing I want to do is blur it up, so I go without. MSAA would be so awesome though, with MFAA turned on through nvidia control panel which would help with the shimmering and kick the AA up a notch with little performance impact.. that would be ideal, IMO.

I tested dx11 again tonight randomly to see if anything had changed. FPS does appear to be stable with it, but there are strange artifacts, like lighting pulsating in places and such. Was looking to see if it would help with the drops to 70 fps in Derelict. I get 120+ everywhere else, but that map has places that just punch my 980ti in the nuts.

DX11 is not being worked on AFAIK.
From my perspective UWE has been trying to both with what little resources they have given to the game. They don't have an AAA budget, let alone an indie game budget. They have the budget of a game that has been out 6 years. I want to say, don't half ass two things, whole ass one thing. I just don't think they have the resources to do it. Unlike many of the people on the forums, I guess I am just happy they are at least trying even though I may not like what they end up doing.

I wonder if this could be achieved with ReShade.

    http://reshade.me/

People were able to add a whole lot of fanciness to other games using this. I don't know if it would work with NS2.

Post-process AA is neither interesting nor very useful to me. Unfortunately, NS2 uses deferred rendering, so it is difficult to get real AA into the game. However, I've read that the deferred lighting technique does allow for MSAA.
