Wanna make things far more interesting? On Earth, there is a specie of bees that, over years of evolution, changed its appearance to mimic the look of a fly.
Make the exact same thing with one or all species of small fish found in Subnautica. Approaching them would become a risk versus gain decision, since they could very well be the predator and attack you.
Also, given how many giant aggressive creatures are planned on being added, I'd love to see a few more large passive creatures too.
would a crustacean that looks and acts like a fish fit in that category?
Some type of mermaid (rare but could be found on every biome) that can be "tamed" for helping, finding resources or something (if not too hard and stupid) and can be aggressive if they're provoked (attacking, be rude or something like this)...
Creature Variants. Rarer variants are more nutritious, or drop loot, or something.
eg: Leatherback Hoverfish, Green Eyed Peeper, Spiked Floater, Snub-Nosed Stalker, Acid Crash, etc.
I would love to see some surface level creatures, something like a jellyfish that floats on the top of the water. Similarly crustacean like creatures that walk on the sea floor. Also more ambush creatures that hide in holes or in the sand. Curious animals that don't attack, but follow the player and interact with them in some way, like dolphins.
I hope you can see this because it's a germanic/french channel, and the voice over is french too... BUT there's plenty of beautiful creatures from the abyss for cool inspiration
Hello @ everyone! Here are a few inspirational suggestions for an open sea/deep sea horror:
deep giant + gloomy ambience suggestion
Another Leviathan
Rift Colossus - an enormous predator:
A huge rock? - Or a sleeping Giant from ancient times?
"Cthulhu" has aroused.
???
"Monster of the Deep" - an eerie predatorily creature from the abyss - hunting a blue whale!
"Mariana Trench Entity"
"The Bloop"
(named after the mysterious "Bloop Sound" recorded in the pacific ocean)
It's hunting a giant squid!
"The Ancient Evil"
It is rumored, that "it" is a highly intelligent creature and a distinguished predator, also utterly corrupt and the nucleus of all evil - perhaps the devil himself. It slept a death-like/hibernatic sleep for many ages at the bottom of the deepest abyss - but now that giant beast has recently awoken from slumber...
There are millions of different species that can be in this water world. I would like to see those that are similar to shrimp, seahorses, starfish, sea turtles, sea snails, rays, eels, sharks, walrus, octopus, seals, mantas, alligator, Kraken, hydra, Cthulhu, dolphins, coral fish, merman/mermaid, swordfish/martin, saw fish, salmon, lobster, flying fish and etc. Hoping for many different alien aquatic plant and animal species.

those would be both horrifying and awesome to run into all at the same time. would want something with a bit more kick for defense if those things were in the game though
The base animation is probably octopus like. It's luring in the dark as a piece of rock, unfolding itself and starting to glow before attacking, then wraps around the player.
And yes, after wrapping around the player it could slowly suck all blood from the player, unless the player has a sharp knife to cut himself free. The biggest sort of them can even be dangerous to the exosuit.
EDIT:
But the most important question will be - can the devs do such a procedural and player tied animation?

Did you find that pic at the Nautilus Live website ?
We already live on an alien planet! ;-)
You mean like, territorial?
I haven't the foggiest idea on how to add pictures, I tried.
but I searched up some other creatures and they look perfect for the game.

No, he means like, defensive.

well implemented to squeeze around the player (difficult animation) should be terrifying enough. Especially in small caves.
Maybe he has some cousins of smaller or greater size.
Maybe a species closely related to the Bleeder?
