Natural Selection II: Pre-Order steam message

in NS2 General Discussion
So I got NS2 from Hugh because I wanted to do some coverage of the game.

First the game was Natural Selection II: BETA but about 4 days after NS2 came on Steam I got a message from Steam named: Natural Selection II: Pre-order.

It said I can give it to someone else, I didn't. Instead I placed it into my Library meaning I now have:

Natural Selection II
Natural Selection II - Pre order

Can someone explain to me what this is exactly?

    I'm guessing you gifted your free extra copy to yourself.

    Yea, you accidentally gifted yourself a copy of the game you already have. (It's strange that steam allows this actually, maybe it considers them to be different entities) I would contact steam support.

    They are different entities.

    The free copies everyone recieves are Standard Edition. All pre-orders have deluxe, and some of us have Black Armor edition.

    The Steam app-id is different for each of the versions, therefore, steam considers it a different game. I don't know why it works like that, but it does...
