Well, I contacted Customer Support (as per advise from official dev posts on PSU), and discovered you only count for the 30 day free key if you specifically have subscribed to PlanetSide, so merely owning the game and using cards on it like I did wasn't enough. Probably puts me out of the running for priority beta access too, then.

WTB source, i've not read anything like that.

My gut instinct would be to say that goes against every other beta ever where they invite as wide a range of computer specs as possible to, you know, beta test it :P

I got the "share your specs" email too, and I remember my password, but when I click the "share your specs" button I just get taken to a page saying "You're already signed up for the beta!", which I take to mean I'm registered to receive information on it when it comes, not that I actually have a beta account. Odd.

Also, Konohas, I just had a discussion with someone about exactly what level of threat I can make to you without it becoming illegal and getting me arrested, so I'll err on the side of caution; if you do give me your beta account, I definitely won't murder you.

So, I couldn't remember which email had Planetside registered, so I just signed up to the beta like 4 times. I did buy Planetside twice at some point in the past so, we'll see.

Anyway, my 'main' email which definitely doesn't have Planetside registered with it on SOE has like 500 station bux or whatever the ######... but no registration confirmation for the beta. Bleh.

Yeah, you're at the right page, but for some reason it's missing the "submit your specs here" button. I was using Firefox, had to open it in IE to get it to work. I think Stickman had the same problem, and neither IE nor Chrome worked for him. Seems to be a really flaky problem, but try all browsers you have.

The reason it seems I couldn't reset my password before was down to me using opera so I used IE and managed to get it working and it let me sign in and such but now even using chrome I only get a page that says:

QUOTE

You have already signed-up for the PlanetSide 2 Beta program. If your email address has changed since you signed up, please update it in Account Management so that we can send you the latest updates on the Beta program, including how to jump in if you are selected.

Hope to see you in game, soldier!

I've tried in it opera, IE and chrome but its the same in all =/

Hopefully being an old PS1 player I'll get lucky...

To be fair, that ability, while really cool, was also kind of overpowered. Half the reason why their AA MAX was so much better than the other two. And it gave them a distinct advantage for tower assaults.
  • AldarisAldaris Join Date: 2002-03-25 Member: 351Members, Constellation
Situationally better where the geography supports it., and even then it can make you a bit fat target that's easy to find due to the massively obviouse projectiles. Otherwise the Sparrow outchases Starfires for tracking and a locked down Burster out damages it. I love the Starfire but calling it flat out best AA max is somewhat wrong.

    What.

I'm not going to do the whole "you must never have played Planetside" spiel because it seems like you have and it's really condescending, but I want you to know I'm tempted.

Moving right along: The biggest advantage the Starfire has is mobility. For any Reaver pilot, AA MAXes are priority targets, because they're some of the biggest threates Reavers face. MAXes take a lot of damage from Reaver rockets. If a Reaver goes head to head with an anchored Burster, assuming that both start firing at the same time and neither misses, it's a pretty even fight. However, that's where the even fights end. The Sparrow MAX has a long lock-on time that costs it valuable seconds, meaning it'll lose the fight every time. And a Burster that is caught by surprise is dead as well. For Bursters and Sparrows, initiative matters immensely: Whichever notices the other one first, AA MAX or Reaver, usually wins. Although a "win" for an AA MAX doesn't necessarily mean a kill, it may just mean scaring the Reaver off, in which case it'll be back a minute later, probably from a different direction and with a thirst for revenge. A win for a Reaver, on the other hand, is a kill. A Burster or Sparrow doesn't have the luxury of fleeing from the fight if they're losing.

Meanwhile, the Starfire. The Starfire is a completely different beast because of its jumpjets. I'm not just talking about the ability to reach rooftops or other high, inaccessible places. That's certainly a bonus, but it's not all. If the Starfire is caught by surprise, it has time to get out of the line of fire. By using the jumpjets, the Starfire can get out of the explosive radius of the Reaver's rockets. In mid-air it is only vulnerable to direct hits, and hitting a flying Starfire with rockets is very hard. Meanwhile the Starfire has great damage output and target-seeking missiles, meaning that it is more than a match for a Reaver in the air, even if it is damaged already. The smart Reaver pilot breaks off the fight and dives for cover. The less smart Reaver pilot gets blown out of the air.

And this is the huge difference between the Starfire and the other AA MAXes. The Starfire is so much harder for air cavalry to suppress. A good air cavalry pilot can destroy AA MAXes with a little care and diligence, especially if there are only a few of them around. But even one or two Starfires are nearly impossible for air cavalry to deal with.

This is not the only advantage the Starfire has. The shorter lock-on time and higher damage output means that it can shoot down aircraft that much faster than the Sparrow. The guided missiles mean that it misses much less than the Burster, and can effectively engage targets all the way out to its maximum range. Any advantage the other AA MAXes have over the Starfire is at best situational and at worst exists only on paper.

The Starfire is the best AA MAX.

And has been mentioned oh so many times to you in the past, you're comparing a one on one situation in ideal circumstances which doesn't happen that often. Yes if I spot the reaver it'll die and I'll live if it's stupid. If it's smart it will still likely get some damage off on me while it dives for cover. Starfire is then stuck with a 10 hour reload period if you don't manually trigger the reload and no jump jets with adequate boost to survive another engagement. Reaver comes back and kills you. But this is pointless example because it simply does not happen that often. In the scenario of a Starfire defending a base (A more realistic and more common occurance) its jump jets and orbs just make it an easy target, and its low clip size and easy to break lock make it less effective than the Burster or Sparrow as they have larger clip sizes and are still threats outside of LoS. If there's one thing I'm not sure about is whether that Sparrow and Burster can take down a shielded Reaver without reloading which the Starfire cannot. If they can then that's a plus in their favour. The Starfire loses situational awareness compared to the other two due to having to maintain lock to do anything useful.

The Starfire is just as situational. On attack it's supreme as it can get to places with 360 cover of the sky incase of they try and break the attack by air and there are few places to truly break a lock for long inside the walls of a base. The Burster is nearly as good but can't prevent a counter attack as well and the Sparrow the reverse. But the previously mentioned defense the Starfire isn't as good.
