But theres two types of beta - those which are actaully just a demo/stress test and some that are actual beta software with stuff totally fubared still.

That doesn't mean the former doesn't happen. See StarCraft2 and several MMOs (WoW) thatopen beta test just for balance/stress.

Yeah, sad many developers don't know what the difference between alpha and beta are.
So obviously we all play games for fun, but as a big bonus for me I like to feel like I actually did something useful within the game. For example, in NS1 you could kill a handful of players and take our a RT. In Tribes you can cap flags, defend against their runners, etc. These actions contribute something meaningful to the team and eventually lead to the victory conditions.
In PS2 there aren't really any victory conditions. You just take points that will be retaken within the hour or day. It's a continual game of musical chairs. While the combat is that of a typical FPS it's not nearly engaging enough and the skill ceiling feels so low. Both of these lead me to become very bored in PS2 after about 45 minutes. Everytime I play I feel like I'm trapped running in a subpar hamster wheel. I guess what I'm saying is that it feels like skill is completely irrelevant. No matter how bad or good you are and no matter how much progress you make, your entire efforts will all be for nothing when you log off.
Am I alone in this or is there something I'm not getting?

I sort of agree with you, havent played PS2 yet so I cant agree on the fun factor. But the ' No matter how bad or good you are and no matter how much progress you make, your entire efforts will all be for nothing when you log off.' i dissagree. in PS1 this wasnt an isuue for me. When i looged off and came back on and seen we lost a lot of what i help to gain, i just seen it as a chalange to help take it back. And thats what i found fun about it

I sorta agree. You can kill an enemy vehicle and know that person cannot get another one for X amount of time. However when capturing bases and even just killing people it is fairly easy compared to Planetside 1. PS1 was always a 20+ minute siege on a complex then another 10-20 minutes just to capture it. In PS2 even the biggest complexes (Mao, Allutum, Zurvan, etc.) only take about 8-15 minutes.
Granted the vehicle and airplane combat is much more enjoyable in PS2 because there aren't any Mechs :P
Once I download and what have you is there anyway I can find any of you kind folk in-game to play with or generally just harass/grief ?

depends which server you are on, theres the usual squad invite thing
Obviously depends on your settings, but at least it terms of looks I believe everything is fairly low res given the size of the client and the Ultra mode was removed during transition from tech test to beta.

I would love if taking a territory required a prolonged siege followed by a prolonged defense. That would add some stability. I wonder why they changed that from PS1...

Some bases may be like PS1 with take and hold for x time or LLU runs.
I am slightly confused by your point that you could log off and lose all the effort you put in to gain territory, but how is that any different than PS1? The back hacking of main facilities needs to stop through a latice system though which might help make things more permanent.

Curiously mine doesn't run so hot either which is surprising considering I can run the likes of BF3 and ARMA2 maxed out at 50-60fps....
In the larger main bases during an assault I'm lucky to be getting 20fps in PS2 with most settings on medium.
I loath the vanu max design it looks utterly atrocious and I annoyingly kept mistaking it for a standard enemy trooper at distance which usually ended badly for me.
That aside last night was a full on nostalgia orgy.

Quick question is there anyway to get the other max weapons as I have seen people running flamers ? when I go look some of the tabs wont open for me in the max certification menu and the ones that do are all 99999 cert points...
its not in the certifications, the other weapons are already there in the class selection screen, you just need to customize your max loadout and pick one of the weapons for each arm
the flamer is quite unimpressive though, it looks like it has quite some reach, but you have to be in punching range to do any damage
unlocking additional weapons for vehicles is done with the marketplace, but the resource tick depends on the area you control, and getting the good stuff costs like 10.000 + auraxium.
we controlled like half of the continent, and resource tick was like 1000 auraxium in 4 hours or so. i can see what they did there, its to frustrate people into buying station cash
I would like to point out you get a lump sum of Auraxium when you fight and take/defend one of the main bases. It just also provides you with a tick amount as well.

Does anyone have an extra beta key they would like to share with me? :( I can't get a key for the life of me. My luck in life is horrible. q.q I'd give my soul for one at this point in time lol
The Skyguard cannon by all accounts is very dire as it still suffers from the recoil of the normal cannon. As for taking out Libs and Galaxies with fighters, other comments are making them out to be hard to take down with the AA guns and missles leaving you vulnerable to other fighters. Could we end up seeing escorts for the fighters taking those down? :P I'd like to see how close we are to server cap to see whether these are the sorts of air numbers we'll be seeing.
Either way I expect to see AA buffed to some where between what they are now, and what they were, and/or a nerf to Libs, either damage so they can't 3 shot tanks or reduce hitpoints so they can't stay in the fight as long as they are currently.
