Don't play with lamers? Wouldn't that be nice. Problem is, lamers exist. Worse yet, they are everywhere. Telling people not to play with lamers is a cop-out. Do you want your map to be relegated to private servers? A couple tutorials I've read suggest not making the team joins blockable by one or two lamers. If it's in the basic tutorials, don't ignore it in such a great looking map.

The brush work on this map is great ... the rooms look fantastic. I'm gonna head home and try this puppy right away. Keep up the great work!

re: the size comparison

Yes, if you took out the maint hive and the command hive, ns_eclipse wouldn't be playable... because they're two of the three hive rooms. That has nothing to do with what I said - if you load up the .map files of eclipse and europa and lay them on top of each other, those two rooms are the only ones that stick out from under the europa map.

D'oh! Forgot to attatch the pic. I was so spoiled by having my own ftp...

Anyhow. I never said Europa is huge. It's not. It was designed due to Flayra's call for smaller maps, for smaller games. But everyone saying it's miniscule... it's not that either.

It's not perfect. But it's good for some fast and furious action in a small-games environment. I certainly wouldn't play it with more than 6v6. I'd say 5v5 would be more optimal.

Personally, I love this map. Besides a siege exploit back when we playtested it on gridlock, I had great fun BEing so small, it meant one battle could wage on as people could reinforce the frontlines even after they died. Created some unique and exciting action.

yeah just tried this map now. It looks great and has brings some unique gameplay to NS that we don't see in bigger maps. Wouldn't mind seeing it in 1.1

Just downloaded it and took a run through. I'm impressed. I really like how many areas are very 3 dimensional ... skulks are gonna love it.

One thing I noticed that may or may not be intentional is that in the marine start area, if you run up to the computer panels, you go right up and over them and fall into the glass bay window area. This could get very frustrating for marines that are running around backwards trying to shoot skulks rushing the base ... they would suddenly find themselves down in the glass bay window area with no way out other than the ladder ... skulk food.

I cannot wait to try this map in a real game.

Very very good map. I haven't played a real game on it yet, but it looks excellant.

Some minor bugs I found.

Chairs bleed like aliens when shot: http://www.microwizard.com/ian/europa/chairblood.jpg

I cant build the resource at the water hive as marines.
Resource node: http://www.microwizard.com/ian/europa/badresource.jpg
Can't build it: http://www.microwizard.com/ian/europa/cantbuild.jpg
And a demo of me not being able to build it too: http://www.microwizard.com/ian/europa/cantbuild.dem

Still an excellant map, will get some tacos to test it at a lan party this weekend.

As far as that res nozzle goes, I could only build one there by doing it at a big angle...

uhmm ok, the map maynot be really smaller then the others. its maybe the layout, but sieges in this map are HELL. you have one siege in there and can cover ALOT of area. but its still fun as long as there aint too many of em.

Being someone who has by far played more than most people commenting on the map - I can say that its small size is, without a doubt, is its high point. If the marines get a seige up it will do damage - despite whatever you all may think here - it does not clear out half the map. Not to mention - if the marines can get a siege up, and hold it long enough for it to do its damage - the marines deserved that part of the map alien-structure-free. Becuase of its small size the aliens can hit quickly, hard, and from all directions. Holding a pont long enough to 1) Build a tfac 2) upgrade the tfac and then 3) building a siege is not an easy thing to do. Plus - as many expierenced players say - any place where the marines can seige from should already be under alien control.

When you are running down a corridor for a swarm of slulks, screaming into the mic for backup, you dont notice the bubbles have black boxs around them. The ladder does work in the MS - just jump on it and you are good to go.

Great map!

I agree, the bubbles look great. You only see the black boxes up close, and who's ever staring out a glass window during a game?

Superb map. Love the architecture and details. Really keeps the feeling of an underwater base setting. Don't know how it plays yet, as I only gave the run around on it just now. Can't wait to try it with some people though, maybe tonight.

I only have ONE gripe with it as is. You, no doubt, know about it yourself, but its the water coming out of the pipe in the pressure something-or-other hive. A couple suggestions for it... maybe make the diameter of the water stream, less than the diameter of the pipe. Second, maybe use some particle systems to give a "splash" look to it where it hits the water. The smoky, steam type sprites I think would look fantastic there. And while you are at it, maybe make the pool of water itself a bit more... wavy? It looks too placid despite the volume of water rushing into it. Don't overdo it of course, but a bit more, as per your judgement ought to do.

I really like the little "alien" plant things that belch steam sometimes. Even though the hives would look good without them, they add a bit more "life" to the enviroment in the hives and a real nice touch, imo.

after playing threw it a bit with two 5v5's and one 6v6, i found that it was really easy to hold siege to one of the hives the one thats right past the "big lift" all u need was a TF in main base in the far corner and put a siege on the other side of the wall. this easily reached the hive. and if the aliens put buildings there to keep us from seigeing we just put a siege in our main base which took those out. but it was a little tricky when the skulks spawned so close to the area no mater where the hive was that they were able to get there quickly, and out flank the marines.

gunna play with it some more but when 1.04 comes out i think this siege problem will be completly cleaned up. making it a lot more possible for small maps to be played with out siege running the show. but untill then the siege makes it a bit difficult.

also, from marine main base u can easily hold the 2 resources right out side the base by putten a TFtf next to the wall and placing a few turrets on the other side to guard the res towers with out having to build new TF's.

overall a really fun map! skulks come from all sides

All I have to say is that this map is excellent. It is very worthy of a 1.1 release. I can't really find anything wrong with it, that is a good thing.

This really should be in 1.1, this is one damn fine map. Certainly the equal of many of the current official maps. I kept looking for a weld point or something that would flood a room, thought it might happen on a water planet like Europa . FANTASTIC setting btw, the creator really had some vision.
