nope, its real, you can even see stuff like this when you go outside, its quite rare that someone actualy films that :p you need wide open space, and large sheets of plastic foil scattered around everywhere, so they can get catched in the therrmic vortex of a dust devil. doing something like that with cgi would actualy take more time than doing it for real. the dynamics and physics calculations involved, let alone rendering such a scene would be quite a task, and a even bigger challenge than placing a couple of fans in a circle (there's not even allot of precision required), and tossing 2 sheets of thin fabric into the center.

it does not take more than that, and theres no control, only a prediction. the end result is pure chaos. i think the tricky part was to create a "hole less" low pressure area around the fan circle which builds up behind and slightly above the fans when the airflow circles from the bottom up, behind the fans, and back to the center. this would prevent the very thin and feather light cloth pieces to escape. the room volume is a factor aswell. this whole setup might even look smaller than it is, these could be 30 inch or larger sized floor fans, these things move alot of air
