No, I can't even turn 90 degrees without the game freezing for 3 seconds and half the time the game crashes while loading the menu or joining a server.

i can play it perfectly fine. the last release is a little bumpier, but that was to be expected with all the big changes, the next one will probably be much more stable again.
The game will probably be a bit jerky and unstable for some time to come. If that bothers you then hold off on buying, if you don't mind putting up with it then go for it.
Basically the newest patch has allowed the game code to run much faster. The problem is this newest big improvement has resulted in some random bugs that can cause occasional crashes and hitches. So instead of always jerky with hitches, the game is now occasionally jerky with hitches but a shot at some much smoother games overall if you find a good server. Saw the comment about not being able to turn 90 degrees without a second or so freeze, and this is like half of the hitching (maybe occlusion issue?). Basically the game has just received its biggest performance boost so far, but at the cost of some bugs which most of will likely be fixed for the next patch. I have a feeling things are going to start getting really good. I have heard people in servers refer to the new patch as being "like a totally new game", although there are a bunch of servers with really bad rates still.
I managed to hit 100FPS running around my level the other day, performance is coming on as Lazer says. And with the latest performance enhancement it's not even fully finished and all elements up to shape so, hang in there, it's not far off that smooth experience which will fill all your servers.
Performance is starting to really improve. The game is no where near the recommended specs yet but it's getting there.
Played the other night when the whole map was covered in infestation and there were plenty of structures and the game ran really smooth, at least for me.
I had a lot of fun playing today. The game got much smoother in the latest version, but don't expect miracles it's still a beta :) I recommend it if you have a good computer and can endure the bugs, if not: Wait
It is playable like crysis is playable on a computer from 1999. Only buy if you are keen to support imo. Wait a few months and hopefully she'll come good.
For me it is playable in anything 4v4 and under. Before the recent patch it was not playable at all. If you're unsure I recommend waiting two months. By then I'm guessing it will be playable for the majority of players.
Granted, you are not going to get smoothness in every single situation and the longer the game goes on the slower it gets. However, the majority of time you will receive a frame rate that is playable at 1920x1080 on lowest settings.
Note:- GPU is not being heavily used as currently the greatest leap in performance is a better CPU due to little optimization.
Further Note:- This is my experiance, I know other players that state their systems are far better than above with poor frame rates, I like to think I know what i'm doing though...haha.
Windows XP PRO SP2 Asus P5B motherboard Core2 Dual 6400 with cores @ 2.13 and 2.54 (Windows recognizes) 2.93gigs of DDR2(dual channel) ram (in the 800mhz range i think) XFX Geforce GTX 260 (black edition) 19 Inch LG LCD monitor Audigy2 soundcard 7200rpm HD with 5.9gigs in virtual memory (pagefiles)
I am running with graphics detail on High, in full screen and at 1280 x 1024 (recommended/highest resolution)
The game is playable. At it's worst(with my game settings)... in weaker and/or large servers (6v6 and up) with lots of structures around the map, and in heavy fire fights my FPS is in the low teens to low twenty's. The stutters are pretty much non existent now, the 'choppy feel' has been significantly improved and is a main focus at the moment for the developers. So even if this current patch is not up to your standards, the game most likely will be in the next couple patches (patches coming ever week or two) Connecting to a (good) server within your appropriate region seems to make a big different at the moment. There are usually about 4 populated servers at a time from what i have observed (playing from Canada -east). Noticeable performance increases just started so im sure BETA player/server numbers will start to increase as people realize the game is running better.
Performance still noticeably limits my capabilities, but i always have a good time and always feel like i can actually accomplish things in what ever roll i end up playing.
When I first started playing it, it was horrendously unplayable. Its gotten better over time. Today, its playable...but at times not so much. But through the glitchyness, framerate stutters, lag and rough gameplay balance there is a glimmer of a really cool game. It'll get there. Watching some youtube videos, including NS2HD, its clear some people have much better performance than me.

...just in case your were wondering. However, I haven't updated my graphics drivers in a year, and haven't reformated in almost 2 years. I probably should get around doing that some time. Planning to go to windows 7 64...not sure if that will actually help performance.

Unless of course it is simply not fun!?

Fight?
It's actually quite fun. I wish more people knew that it has improved so that there are more people playing.
Great feedback.
I have tested NS2 on an older machine. (although not ancient by any means)

Suffice to say my rig is ancient, so chances are you'll have a much better experience playing it than me. :)
