Natural Selection 2 Hats?!

<div class="IPBDescription">TF2 can do it, why can't NS2?!</div>I'm not going to lie, one of the main reasons I bought NS2 was because of the black armor. I love it when I can play an FPS and customize my character to make him look different than everyone else. It gives them flavor. In the new game Call of Duty Black Ops your character can even have face paint!

Is it possible for there to be hats in the game? Maybe a little gorge with a party hat? Marines with top hats? The possibilities are endless. What do you think of a lerk with goggles? I remember watching NS2HD videos on youtube and there was one on lerking and the poster kept referring the the lerk as a 'pilot.' I think having a set of goggles would really make you stand out.

If hats are too ridiculous of a suggestion (they aren't), then what about colors? Maybe a gold fade instead of a black/greenish one will be cool. That way when the marines see the fade coming, they know it's this player fading because he uses that color when he fades.

Hats would ruin the excellent art direction of the game.

However, as a possible money making opportunity, the ability to buy DLC kits for the marine which lets you pick different helmets, breastplates, greaves and shinguards and whatnot, that could be rather good. Wouldn't affect gameplay at all but would appeal to some.

Not sure what you could do with aliens other than colour schemes though.

They should just have different severs which have hats enabled. I want my marine to have a top hat on while he's killin' stuffs.

I think someone will need to create the hats before servers can have them enabled or not.
On that note, anything is moddable right?

Havent we already had discussions stating that it'd be terrible if NS2 went down the same road as TF2 with all the DLC sillyness marathon?

Mechnical alterations based on buying stuff is kinda stupid, but visual ones, who gives a crap?

Some people will buy it, some won't, who cares? Doesn't affect your ability to play.

Tho it does affect immersion when a gorge in a clownsuit runs along spitting candycanes making *HONK HONK* sounds.
And thats not the kind of NS2 i'd like to have.

(Yes ofc it can be done in a more serious way, like tweaking armors etc. but the general direction these things seems to go is towards sillyness - and beyond!)

That's because TF2 (an intentionally comical game) did them first and everyone else is copying them.

Hence why I suggested making marine armor kits.

    Not silly hats.

That lerk is very, very cute. Saved!

Ditto on what other people said. On other servers if it's not serious stuff. Active on all servers if its DLC packs made by UWE. Damn you guys have good ideas.

Actually I stole it from killing floor.

Although the mix and match idea is from somewhere else, not sure where though, maybe guild wars where you get multiple similar statted armors and just pick the coolest one.

thank god nobody takes this seriously.. or do they?! Duum duuum duuuumm!!

seriously, all of this is allot of work for a 4 man team with absolutely NO BENEFIT. None whatsoever except the Cool factor, which should never be counted on its own.

I' would pay for that just for the lulz factor. I;d only need it once, since I'd die laughing afterwards.

seriously though this idea could be possible. Having different heads and head gear for the marines for example

    Gas mask
    No helmet
    Different coloured armor
    Different looking armor
    Female marine

    and for the kharaa

    Horns
Differnet coloured skin and bone etc
    tentacles etc.

The Halo:Reach approach seems quite reasonable, but we're only in beta yet. sit back and watch the movie, will ya?

Cosmetic differences for both marines and aliens would be a good idea for a DLC. Great way to allow the diehard to buy stuff without splitting the community.

Marines could get different armor/helmet variant stuff like Halo: Reach. Thicker shoulders, helmetless, shotgun belts, the works. Maybe an industrial-yellow exoskeleton :) Ripley, with Chainguns!

Aliens could get color splashes/tones in different areas of the body. Like blood-stained claws for the Fade. This is harder to think of.

I agree with cosmetic differences that you could buy through some ingame money system, as in winning matches you get X amount of points and after X amount of points you can by cosmetic stuff. Purely Cosmetic. Possibly different colors/tentacle locations/armor for Kharaa, and the general stuff for marines.

Things like this would also make good rewards for any organised league, unique armor sets for the winners and runners up and whatnot.

Not quite on the hats theme (although DLC does seem a decent idea) but will there be room on the armour for any personalisation at all - I was thinking even just a small customisable name plate on the shoulder / chest would be relatively easy to do (I guess) but might just be quite nice. I say customisable as showing full player names might not work too well given length, probably keep the colour the same (bronzeish?).

Should be entirely possible if they have the lua controlled materials they were going to use, like customisable signs in levels.

if DLC. the I WANT to be able to turn it off for me.
there is absolutely nothing more immersion breaking than everyone running around in completely different armors/skins/alien body hair dress styles
when they are to be consistent and realistic.

    OPTION!
  • yourbonesakinyourbonesakin Join Date: 2005-08-06 Member: 57682Members
If people can turn it off, it'll sell less well.

I can see it now: "Feature: DLC so HORRIBLE other players have the option to turn it off! Buy now!"

People should be able to show off their DLC. That's one of the biggest motivators for buying a special skin.

So I don't agree, but that's just an uninformed opinion. People who actually sell DLC or know about DLC skins probably know better.

I'm fairly sure the art team can put together variations on a theme.

Just look at any of the mass concept sheets they put out, they all fit but look different.

hats are a great idea for extra income - especially ones that fit the games art style.

you could even do comedy hats, if there was a client side option to turn hats on and off or even have only realistic hats on.

that way people that wanna play with funny hats can, and it won't ruin it for anyone else, as seriously players could filter them out.
