Nice! Although I do sense a new building buildings thread coming, powered by Gorge

QUOTE (Slavak @ Aug 19 2010, 06:28 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I'm sure that it would freak a whole lotta people out the first time a crag spewed a horde of babblers onto them.
unless you bringed a flamethrower with you! :D
are these babblers going to be somewhat dumb/wandering like in NS1? if so then why not make something WITHOUT EYES!!! then you could have the Crag's targeting system work like a parasite thing or something. OOOOOOOHHHHHHH, WINNING IDEA.....
i dont remember if parasite is an ability or not, but just follow me (lets just say the skulk does). near a crag the skulk parasites a marine. the commander gets a little notification and/or the marine now glows or something. the alien commander can now target the marine with babblers. if the babblers kill the marine the alien team gets some bonus res.
or
the babblers are very effective but in order to target a marine/building the aliens need to keep hitting it with parasites. the babblers loose track of the parasite after like 10 seconds so the target needs to be reinfected. this could simulate something like a sniper team where one guy has the gun and the other guy helps sight for the sniper (and/or if infantry is lighting up a target for airstrike. the skulks are lighting up a target to get taken out).
oh wow that would be cool. unfortunately i didnt really like any of the mockups for the babblers, oh well :(.

QUOTE

they were scaled down Skulks running the Half-life Snark code!

Here's your babbler model. Nothing says nostalgia like being able to reminisce the old days while a swarm of babblers goes haywire. Of course, it can't be the exact same model for copyright reasons unless Valve would be cool enough to let you modify it NS style.
If that's out of the question, mini skulks would be sweet.

QUOTE (Slavak @ Aug 19 2010, 06:28 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I'm sure that it would freak a whole lotta people out the first time a crag spewed a horde of babblers onto them.

oh that would be cool if you could set up a crag/babblers as like a claymore/anti personnel mine. as soon as a marine rounds a corner BAM, a face full of wiggilies.
I recognised so many stuff from other games there :S.
#3 is the small heacrabs from halo (dont remember their name). #4 is a headcrab. #6 is tickling my memory but I just cant figure out what. #8 is the antlion larvae. #9 is the glowing alien in Alien Swarm, or if you cut one leg, it is a strider.
Others just remind me of some other creatures vaguely. Like #1 is a mosquito, #2 is a bus and #11 has a sneaking look over it that reminds me of cats.
I think #10 looks the best, altough #7 is nice, it just looks so sad a marine would hug it instead :(.
Like number seven, they're all good, but seven stick out I think.

Likely because it exists.
2. The cartoon the Tick had a warcry of "spoooooooooon," which i have always found funny.
3. Ticks will mess u up if not dealt with. They suck blood (causing a small amount of damage), and they slow down enemy movement (they cause lyme disease which leads to paraplegia).
My question is will they have hitboxes or will it be a "run out of crag range and they'll jump off me" type of thing?
Cool, so I am not the only one who thinks #10 is completely awesome. I'm also liking #8 as well.
These two scream out "Dawwww... look at the cute li'l ali... GAAAH GET IT OFF ME!" and would help keep with the relative quirkiness of the Commander controlled entities.
EDIT: I'd actually like to list out all the designs and give a proper $0.02 on each; perhaps to stimulate some debate.
#1. Spindly-legs make it remind me of the Flood from the Halo universe. Don't think it would fit the lack of noodle-like appendages that many of the Kharaa classes have.
#2. Eugh. Are those teeth down the middle of the front of the alien? Creepy! Reminds me of headcrabs from the HL universe!
#3. An excellent choice if the Babblers were so smart as to spend the majority of their time in the Crag plotting ways to get their sub-species at the top of the Kharaa food-chain! Babbler #7 asks: "What are we going to do tomorrow night?", Babbler #3 or #6 responds: "Same thing we do every night. Try to take over the universe!"
#4. Big, big teeth! I could have sworn I've seen some alien race with teeth that look like that from some other video game.
#5. Legless Necromorph's from Dead Space, anyone?
#6. See #3, minus the octopus look.
#7. I can totally see this alien going for the human ear. Eugh!
#8. Kekeke! Tiny scarab reminds me of the Zerg drones from the Starcraft series. Cute, but quite dangerous looking.
#9. Striders from Half-Life 2 and the Gonarch from Half-Life 1. Over-used! Also, it'd be kind of weird if the babblers were built around leaping around as opposed to crawling up to the marines.
#10. Tiny little lobster creatures of death! The antennae look fantastic.
#11. I'd put this design in third place. It looks a bit awkward with those right-angled pincers, but it still looks kind of dangerous!

I'm really digging the Crag. Good call UWE, that is a really good direction to (no pun intended) evolve the DC. I hope there are some nice animations for the Crag. Nothing major, but something like the lower fleshy section bulging a bit before it spurts out a Umbra cloud. Little touches like that.
I'm rather surprised that folks here didn't hit on the "Skulk Feed" ability. So, skulks can eat corpses now? Do they have to be enemy corpses or can friendly corpses work too? Hmm, questions.
For the Babblers, I have to say #1, #3, and #11. All those seem to mesh with the new Kharaa theme the best (imo).

on that note, what are the details involving ragdoll/corpse duration? it's usually a cosmetic option on the player's end to have corpses stay for a chosen set of time due to performance reasons or they might not want the clutter (depending on the game).

Interesting....
Look at its bottom, you can see the wheels make marks in the skin, and the shape is that of a bus clearly. You can even see window marks on the skin.
Some photoshopper that see resemblance that can color it so other people see it to?

Likely because it exists.
I love 4,7 and 8 (maybe a poll option might be useful for this thread, plus it could be funny if different crags have different Babblers).
I hope the building will be buildable under-water
but it hardly depends on what the babblers abilities are like
I think that the babblers should be larger than the number 1, otherwise we will dont see anything in game...
beside that, i can't make a choice >_< they all seems so "cute" :D
2 and 4 are weirdly cute and fit NS. Not sure if they would make much of an impact on me when I play marine...
Indifferent to 3 and 7. The designs don't have as much character as the others.
I would rule out 1, 6, 8, 10, and 11 because they look to much like real life bugs, not NS alien bugs.
1. Ticks are pretty gross and creep me out.
2. The cartoon the Tick had a warcry of "spoooooooooon," which i have always found funny.

more rts elements pls, more more more!
babbler 1, 4, 9 and 11 are looking fast moving.
rest looks slow and unhasty.
10 looks like a litte tank :D
