I came home drunk the other night to see the site down again, linking to some brand new site with a pre-order. So I pre-ordered the better than standard version and went to bed.

When I woke up in the morning I honestly thought I had some sort of weird dream, never the less my online banking statement confirmed I did one sensible thing that night! =]

Oddly enough I also dreamed about Natural Selection 2 after I pre-ordered it yesterday.
I was running around campus and looking at videos of that game. There were also lerks flying around but I didn't think it was too weird.

After lurking around in the darkness, I want to say first of all that I played NS under 2 years before completely stop gaming. Now my addiction have drawn me back.

You sir, actually made me the effort to register on this forum.

The only question that will remain unanswered is the anti-cheating one. The following answers is just by common sense and some digging on this website.

    Release year: (Fall) 2009

Open beta is kind of popular term in these days? You get first access with SE.

Linux client, after MAC and Xbox 360. Server-side, Wine?

It's been developed in years and you need to wait in months, see Fall 2009

QUALITY BASED ON GRAPHICAL REQUIREMENTS?! GTFO CRYSIS !"#¤ER!
Warcraft III, World of Warcraft(+Blizzard), Castle Crashers, Wii(Super Smash Brothers Brawl) and other games have been all about the graphics and thus getting a high quality rating.

Free content update? Yes mods: <a href="http://www.naturalselection2.com/faq/game-questions/whats-the-modding-situation-with-ns2.html" target="_blank">http://www.naturalselection2.com/faq/game-...n-with-ns2.html</a>
And if you consider that Natural Selection (that was a free mod to HL) was getting frequently updates, you can seriously count on their own RETAIL GAME.

Then the later is just plain rubbish, they have revealed their plans with the direction on the game as frequent "bloggers".
And if you can't spend $19.95 and trust the developers to get it out, then your "requirement"-question is even more curious.

Virus as allways use common sense.

Fall 2009? If there is no alpha version now do you really expect a full tested final in about october 2009? I guess even the dev team can't tell you a real release date by now because it would be dubious to do that. I'm also wondering what kind of game you may have played but it can't be ns or maybe your memory is not the best. For a mod it is ok if the community has to wait months or maybe a year or more for updates and fixes but if you pay for a game, dosen't matter how much, i guess you wan't updates and fixes asap! You are really telling me i sould use wine to emulate a windows based game server for ns2 on a linux box? You are a funny guy bus the sad part is that i can't remember of one single multiplayer based game that survived without linux servers <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" /> You used the name Crisis so we can take that as example. Even a top selling product like Crisis is more or less dead online, just a few servers left not really much players around. I did run my own crisis server on my win box but it didn't pay out. What plans are revealed? You mean the nice postings from time to time with some model pictiures and some small hints about game mechanics? Well ok thats maybe me but i would like to know more before i spend money for a product and i don't care about how much i have to spend, it's just you know on principle <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

And about your great common sense: don't spend money on products you just have seen a 1 min redered video and a few pictures of model concepts <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

Btw: looks like the board is more then bugged right now <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

While a Linux ded. server would be nice and all, I dont get what that has to do with how successful the game will be. Its not like online fps games lack servers in general, most times there are way too many servers than there are players.

I doubt most of the people that pre-ordered this game based their decision solely on the trailer and various other media released by UWE regarding NS2.
If the shear fact that hundreds/thousands of people pre-ordered this game (90%-95% of them special edition at that), despite there not being more details, doesn't show you that we have great trust in UWE and their ability to make this an awesome game, then I'm afraid you'll just have to wait before you make your decision. And this isn't merely blind trust - they have proven they have the ability to create and maintain a truly awesome game.

That ONOS will take some getting used to! What a change. Cannot wait for this, NS2 will be huge.

All and all I was very impressed with the teaser. Unfortunately, I just don't buy the "entirely in-engine" part about it. I've never seen an animation of that quality (the onos) before in a game and I don't think its currently possible. Correct me if I'm wrong.
  • daidalosdaidalos Join Date: 2004-05-23 Member: 28854Members, Constellation
Yeah, I also believe there was some post-rendering done, or whatever you call it.
I don't think these "blur" effects actually turn up in the game, it would be distracting, too.
The Onos looks much too detailed, too.

But I can imagine that the levels actually look like that in the game.

    Looks awesome! I have been waiting for this soooooo long! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Hopefully it won't be long until we're back to the days of EU vs US games!!

Excellent teaser guys. The new Onos model is quite incredible! It improves upon the NS1 'style' without being too different... The engine is looking fantastic as well. The shader rendering and real-time lighting/shadowing are looking sharp (looks more realistic than UE3 I believe). Can't wait to get my hands on the editing tools! (pre-ordered SE of course <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />)

The black armor marine sounds nice and all ...but...

Where is the perk for alien players?

I do believe that was an in-engine render, but not an in-game render. IE, you wont see that blur effect in game (it would be anoyining if it did probably, although I think that the blur was caused by the engine, not too hard to do that), and that roar is probably rare if it even exists in game (maybe some kind of new ability?). Also the text added may have been post-rendered into the video.

would be interesting if that animation was a taunt of some sort. If not it's probably not ingame.

You're 100% wrong. You see animations like that ingame all the time. Half-Life 2 has dozens of them. The most impressive is probably Dog's fight with the Strider in Episode 2.

I just pulled up a youtube video (as good quality as I could get) on the dog vs. strider fight you mention, and the quality of animation is NOTHING AT ALL like this teaser; there is a world of difference in the amount of detail shown. It's difficult to describe the differences without technical knowledge of texturing etc., but its just an obvious observation.

I know that this is the absolute best showcase of NS2 technology the team could make, and I really did enjoy it, but it's just not possible for this kind of animation to be present in regular gameplay. If the texturing and animations in this teaser SOMEHOW make it into general gameplay, then this game will surpass every game ever made, including Crysis. Just listen to the absurdity of that statement. But who cares? The teaser was awesome and it generated the hype (and probably the funds) the team needed.

Well, that could be just the floor stomp animation that plays when you use that skill. Of course they player wouldn´t have control during this event but it is very possible to add an animation of that kind into a MP game.

    Also:

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->We’re still optimizing and tweaking of course, but there’s no trickery there. There are a couple scripted bits in there that may not be part of the in-game experience like the Onos ducking through a door, the Onos moving slowly (he’s a playable character and no one wants to move that slowly!) and the metal flaps fluttering when the door is smashed, but I would say it’s very representative of the game.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
