I haven't had a chance to mess around with it, but it certainly looks like a handy little tool. I know I've spent way too much time making mockups in photoshop just to scrap it all and start over. This'll save me a good bit of time.

Seems like it would still be quicker to use pencil and paper, or a whiteboard if available. Easier to sketch ideas up quickly, and easier to sketch exactly what you want rather than trying to find premade bits and pieces that fit your ideas.

I wish I could see the blurred out text...

    ;P

I'm curious Flayra, what are some of the new/few key ideas that you guys have pulled from GDC that you're considering implementing into the team/plan/design?

Cool stuff. Seems like like this would be an interesting way to do some mock ups. Thanks for the post.

I would suggest you look at the new stuff that will be coming out in Blend 3 from Microsoft. Same basic idea in that you can click and drag basic windows components to create UI that doesn’t look finished (on purpose). Also if they do the new sketchview feature correctly it could VASTLY speed up designing complex UI interactive behavior. Especially when combined with the new behavior modal so that encapsulates reusable UI code. Its designed to create Silverlight/WPF based nextgen UI's but I'm sure you can use it to try out HTML based layouts as well. They got free ctp stuff out (I don’t think they have ever really not had a free CTP version of blend out lol).

    The bottom line looks like "Prepare for XXX this YYY". <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/marine.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::marine::" border="0" alt="marine.gif" />

I thought summer 2009 was unrealistic, but with a promo website, a teaser (is that what the storyboard is for?) and Max mostly working on Decoda lately (based on the twitters <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />) - is it time to get excited yet?

Very cool! While we're on the subject of design tools, does UWE (or anyone else here) use any other similar pre-planning phase design tools/utilities like this that also bridge the gap between the informal creative process and the technicality of design? For instance, mind-mapping or flowchart software?

I figured out what the top blurred text says. It's a quote from 2002 by someone outside UW. Sorry if that spoils too much. I will say no more. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Figured it out too. Took me a bit because I couldn't make out the 4th word.

Feeling left out (and obviously not oldschool enough to recognize the quote), I decided to figure out what it was. It turns out that not looking directly at the text, but rather looking above it a bit and letting it fall into peripheral vision worked out pretty well. With three words and a Google search, I am now in the know!

I still cannot believe summer 2009 is the release. If it is, it's going to ruin my senior year of college, because there's no way I will be able to play enough of it during the summer alone. Then, working on Lua modifications? Pht, get outta here. I'm going to be a dropout.

Also, I appreciate the posting frequency of news lately! It's always interesting when they venture into realms not necessarily directly related to the game.

I love balsamiq mockup. I'm a freelance developer and as soon as clients see something "real", no matter how much you tell them it's a mockup they get the impression that it's actually done. The sketch style makes it much easier to get the idea of the design across without people getting carried away / confused / focussed on aesthetics rather than usability.

What is this Comic Sans horror?!?!

On a more serious note, I like the small but more frequent updates. It's nice to see what's going on, and it's always interesting.

Okay, I see it too! (The top blur).

I'm fairly certain I know what the bottom says as well, but I'll refrain from saying anything specific so I don't get slain by a Mod or Dev (and if it says what I think it does, I probably would). The last word looks like it was blurred or masked additionally (probably because it's the most important part of that sentence).

"God****, I...I got to tell you, I'm fairly excited to see what [it is], if Morpheus is right and all... I'm not supposed to talk about this, but if [it is]... it's a very exciting time!"

The bottom blur appears to say Prepare for Launch Fall 2009.

    That's a fairly realistic date for a release <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

No no no you got it all wrong, it's 'Prepare for Lunch Fall 2009'.

Found the quote, no idea who actually made it. And I don't really see how it spoils anything for NS2.

For a moment there I thought this software was free, but alas demo-only version.

Heh, you guys are too good. I should never blur anything out but just delete it entirely!

Some GDC takeaway blog updates would be cool. The Bioware level design process <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/news/2009/03/committal_and_top_down_level_design_in_ns2" target="_blank">really affected me</a> but I'm sure there are others too.

<i>Disclosure: Mockups isn't free, but it can be if you blog about it, which is what put me over the edge in writing about this instead of just tweeting about it.</i>

For those who want to be spoiled:

    <b>Sorry, I blurred it out for a reason.</b>

I get bluring the part at the bottom, but I dont understand why you would care about the top part.

Maybe there's a partnership there he didn't want to expose early. Or maybe he just doesn't want to jinx it before he asks the author if he can use the quote still.

Why would they ask? Quotes are free for everyone.

That's funny cause I couldn't figure out the quote at all, but I immediately recognized the attribute portion of the blur.

and the launch 2009 was already "betrayed" by this investor. anyway i wouldnt give too much about this, especially not -summer- 2009, because this would be VERY soon ??

Out of curiosity, did you happen to catch any presentations by other small/independent developers? Like say, Eskil Steenberg? If not, he does have his blog/news that seems to be the cliff notes version of it (http://news.quelsolaar.com/#post41) and it couldn't help but make me think of things like you guys working on Decoda.

How on earth was anyone able to read the blurred words? Its just a line of fuzz to me.

Im liking the subtleness of having the teaser there. Looks like it must be on the cards soon.

Thanks for the link to Mockups. Another similar product I've used before is <a href="http://dub.washington.edu:2007/denim/" target="_blank">Denim</a> which is free. It's entirely sketch based and is designed for use with a tablet for drawing, but I got some good mileage out of it with a mouse. The strength of Denim is that you can get basic functionality into your mockups very quickly, which is great for testing workflow. Denim can export your mockups to html <a href="http://dub.washington.edu:2007/denim/denim_daily_files/page149.html" target="_blank">like this</a>, and has the ability to add your own widgets (well, every 'widget' you use must be hand drawn, but you can save and reuse them).

Denim was a little bit buggy last time I tried it, but there looks to have been some updates since then. I wouldn't say that Denim and Mockups are in direct competition, Denim is better for internal use (output is a bit ugly unless you're an artist), whereas Mockups' output is much more appropriate for showing to a client. The lack of custom widget creation is a little bit stifling if you've got some fancy js widgets on your page.

I think the idea of powering up and down various parts of the level is an excellent idea, as long as it's implemented with a clear an communicative UI.
