Is that an NS board game!?!? The pens for vents are a nice touch :-p
And the pictures of the sub are great. I really like the picture of one of your artist sticking his head in a cabinet to take a picture. That's the dedication I like to see!

i never played space hulk, tho ive heard u mention its inspiration a few times, i prefered Quest personnally. A submarine is probs a good place to look for inspiration since i imagine sub combat will be very similar to space ship combat in the future, cramped conditons, high powered weapons, and the element of supprise being critical.
If i were looking for sci fi inspiration id probs watch space odessy 2001, go to the london underground and travel to the subway station near canary wharf - thats uber sci fi, stand on the beach down the road from my apt, and look at the lights of portsmouth across the water and remeber the opening chapters of Neuromancer, or go to fawley, a big oil refinery near where i live, it burns of oil and gas at night and fire comes out of the tops of the chimneys, its covered in lights like the start of blade runner, i may watch red dwarf too.
Some people on this forum may have played the recent stalker shadow of chenobyl. twas a good game, but they got the setting nailed down really well, i watched a documentary on the chenobly disaster during my A levels at school, and that game made it so real, and atmospheric

honestly i would like to see the metal hole like floor texture in the game(from the sub pic)
and for the board at first i thouhg it was a map then after readin commentsi went back and realized it was infact a game board or atleast a simple layout of a new NS map <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
Dam, someone said it before me... I never played Space Hulk, I started collecting at the end of when it was "the game to play", as the first few White Dwarfs I got had some map pieces in. I do like the 3D map pieces that people make for Space Hulk though. My friends and I loved it's Warhammer equivalent, Warhammer Quest, we played it every week for months, with games master and everything...
If you are playing table top games that will inspire NS2, may I suggest Necromunda, or the artwork for Battlefleet Gothic.

They might be good inspiration for 3D skybox models... maybe?
EDIT AGAIN: Lol! I just looked at that space hulk image properly, it's all laid out wrong, and the name of it is "hulk_prototype_800x457". So everyone who said map layout (or map "prototype" <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> ), may have been right...
NS2_Hulk anyone? I’ll make it if no one else wants to...
That boardgameesque map thingy does indeed look like Eclipse...

I don't know what they're called in this game, but those standing green thingies most likely represent some kind of doors. And since doors aren't normally so important, there must be something special about <i>those </i>doors, that they get an extra sign. Maybe they are weldables...
And the map does indeed look like it could be eclipse.
Counters cant be rts - theres none in the hives of which it looks like there are more than three, always an idea i'd had, hives being able to be built wherever there is enough room, and perhaps with dynamic infestation it may become a possibility - as soon as the slime has spread you can build in any given space, would allow for more variety per map (although admittedly would suffer strategy planning wise <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" /> )
Ooh - or is it perhaps of one of my favourite pastimes - procrastination?
It's definitely a map layout with (as Chromey said) Genestealers for Hives, a Marine for the Marine Start and counters for res nodes.
The puzzling thing is the doorways. There is no reason for them to be there unless they do something, which definitely ties in with the welding info that was revealed in a previous podcast. I am guessing that these are 'lockable' doorways, perhaps with both teams able to lock and unlock them (this idea was talked about a bit in I&S). There seems to be no indication of which doors start locked and which start unlocked (perhaps LUA scripting could create a variety of interesting scenarios based purely on having different door 'state' configurations for each official map?).
The layout is essentially Eclipse, but some of the corridors around Maintenance Hive (right side) have been changed, which sounds about right, because Maintenance remains the only weak aspect of Eclipse's layout after many revisions for NS.
For anticipant NS2 mappers this does effectively tell us that the game will still support 'kite' map layouts, so it looks like porting old maps to Source should not be as difficult as it might have been.
BTW as well as i remmeber, you've told that the "3 hives layout" will change, but i can make out 3 monsters and another different one, so it means you are going to keep the 3 hives layout, arent you?(if i havent listend to a podcast in which you tell this to the public, then i apologize, but i'm really interested in this main tactical feature)

I think it's a good idea to get inspirations from things and locations you normally wouldn't associate with the desired outcome.
Hope you will have a podcast this week!
I suppose Space Hulk might make for an interesting way to conceptualize maps before actually working on them.
