I don't get it, will Immortals be only available in limited numbers (like the Dark Templar in Starcraft non-Brood War) or is this "each Immortal loss is keenly felt" just flavor text?

Pretty sure that it's flavour text. Really rare for there to be a number-cap on individual units apart from in the single player campaign.

And can someone show me a representative screenshot of the excessive shininess? IMO everything seems alright. Most of the shiniess comes from the protoss which is appropriate... ?

And... marines with some kind of riot shields?? Unless they have a special usage (possible use after upgrade?) they seem a bit odd...

Lets talk about the original starcraft. Did anybody besides me get their kicks from ganking other players in 7v1 comp matches? I would just build 300 zerglings while everyone else screwed around, then attack when everyone is busy with the computer... I didn't make many friends doing that D:

I went to play some Starcraft but couldn't on account of my LCD monitor, sadly. It's at such a low res my screen... vibrates.

Well, it's not shiny so much as it's clean. The Terran buildings and gear are well-kept and in proper shape in the current screenshots. The original Starcraft's concept art may have been like that (in the game manual it varied between artists), but the grainy in-game images of the units gave the Terrans a heavy industrial-grime/gritty marine corps feel.

It's also nice to see that the zerglings have an identity now: they used to have somewhat contradicting concept pictures, cinematic models, and unit portraits, but now they have a definite bug swarm feel in all cases.

I really don't like the wings on the Zerglings that much, now they got to much of a earth-buglike feel. Oh well, I might learn to like it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

** cough ** ** cough**

It's a dead link !!!!!!

By the way, don't you love these forums where no matter what positive threads you start, there will always be people that just cannot keep theire mouth shut and start raining on your parade. I dare any one to start one single new thread of its own about a positive subject and see if after 1 week it doesn't get like 50% of its replies being negative or stupid replies. Well at least that is what I see in unknownworld's forum for the past years. People just cannot stand seeing positive threads !!!

so you want internet forum threads to be "hey here's an opinion, everyone who agrees with me post, those who don't stay away"?

i'd like to take this moment of off-topicness for saluting the admins over the past 3 or 4 weeks for using their powers much, much less frequently then they used to. there's a tiny bit of personal flaming but it's worth it as for the first time since i've been using these forums (my first account dates back to ye olde days) we're actually getting quality, heated, debated discussions.

Btw: the gameplay videos are identical to the ones on in the WWI event except they are higher quality and in English.

Edit: Heated discussions are all well and fine. But the problem is when they are irrelevant to the actual topic. Some minor flaming and ###### attitudes is ok imo but if youre going to stay on the f-ing topic! It's particularly sad when the thread has to go off-topic in order for people to reprimand others about the off-topicness of the thread.

My only complaint is that the new seige tanks look ugly. They have no discernible front/back or orientation, they're like squares. The zerglings do look a little too insecty, but that can be fogiven just from the pure beauty of the swarm!

Yeah, I like swarms. That was one thing you just couldn't do in WarIII. Even if you had the money to build a swarm, the game mechanics/formations werent designed to utilize them.

Thanks!

I just gobbled the 500Mb version in 4mins on my uni connection D:

Edit: Holy ###### its beautiful. The (larger) video is pretty much at a game playing resolution so it's definitely worth watching even if you've already seen some Youtube clips.

Am I the only one who noticed, from the game play videos, that units cannot fire on the move? I guess they did this so that melee units would stand a chance, but then who would expect a flying battle cruiser to be capable of something as complex as being able to fire a weapon on the move. Sure there are better things to do with CPU cycles, like realtime dynamic lighting, but some ballistic physics for the siege tanks would have been nice to see. Oh well, I guess the guys at Blizzard decided to go the easy way of balancing a rock paper scissors game, and not one where realtime physics calculations determine hits and misses.

Since this is only a preview of the game, I can't make a decent analysis; but, from the videos, it appears as though it is just a prettier Starcraft with a few new units leaving me wholly unimpressed that they have done nothing truly new. Starcraft 2 looks to be just another clickfest like Warcraft 3.

Units can't fire and move in any Blizzard RTS. It's how it works.
• CxwfCxwf Join Date: 2003-02-05 Member: 13168Members, Constellation
Technically, Goliaths can fire while moving in Starcraft 1. There's no command to force them to do that though, it just kinda happens sometimes if they get attacked while moving somewhere. Probably a bug.
• AldarisAldaris Join Date: 2002-03-25 Member: 351Members, Constellation
Hits and misses based on % chance would piss off the entire competitive scene. It won't happen.
• Dirty_Harry_PotterDirty_Harry_Potter Join Date: 2002-11-21 Member: 9500Members
also, it can seem that flyers and vultures can fire while moving, but I think this is just due to how they "slide" when stopped...

One of the main reasons why units do not fire and move in Starcraft is that it severely reduces micro-management. An easy example is when Large Dragoon Army A is firing at close quarters to a retreating Small Dragoon Army B.

If firing and moving was implemented, B would just click to run in a random direction and his units would auto fire as they ran. Similarly, A would just click in the general direction of the retreating army B and his units would auto fire. Not much micro skill involved.

Compare this to the current situation where B can maximise his damage against A whilst at the same time retreating by carefully moving his dragoons during the cooldown time of the firing. Correspondingly, A can also move his units closer to B during the cooldown to maximise his damage against B whilst maintaining proximity to B (so B does not get out of range)

Its ###### to describe, but I will find a Youtube video of some of this micromanagement which I am talking about...

The question basically becomes, so why bother with micromanagement? Who needs it anyway? Make life easier for everone! Well, micro-ing your units is an inherent part of Starcraft. It is a crucial element of the game which is "easy to learn but difficult to master" and this nature is why Starcraft is still going strong today in places like Korea. With less micro, the focus is on macro (overall strategy, economy, build orders etc.) which obviously requires skill too. However, part of the genius of Starcraft 1 is that is balances this micro and macro (~50-50) and the optimisation of this balance is another skill in itself.

This is why innovations such as 'autocast' and 'auto-formations' are generally frowned upon by the hardcore community as these remove small but significant areas of subtleties in the game where skill is required.
