Found out about it on:
<a href="http://digg.com/gaming_news/Valve_Hacked_Your_Info_may_be_at_risk" target="_blank">http://digg.com/gaming_news/Valve_Hacked_Y..._may_be_at_risk</a>
WARNING, SITE THAT DIGG LINKS TO CONTAINS SPYWARE!
(firefox ftw)

I spoke the guy (MaddoxX) on IRC, and I've checked the particle demo.
If he indeed has CC numbers...:X
He also claimed to have more then just CC numbers and particle demo.
I'm not at my home pc, so I don't have IRC logs by hand..

Your link, Zaggy, takes to me to a site which attempts to load three pieces of spyware.

But I'm still trying to figure out what officially is going on. Or is this a hoax itself?

Of course, valve was hacked earlier and had a whole build of HL2 stolen...

    Well there is that... ><

I'm beginning to agree with Thansal here. Please remove the link in the meantime, Zaggy, unless you can find another site w/o spyware that is reporting the issue.

True, but you know, once bitten, twice shy type thing.

My favorite thing about that entire event was the genius who zipped up 13 or so gigs of homosexual pr0n and released it as the leak <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

Admittedly Valve is NOT handling this entire thing very well. Removing all posts about the topic, and not making any official statement. Even a "we are aware of this and are investigating" would be good.

Oh well, I guess it is a good thing I am about to ditch the bank account the card I used was tied to.

Like all powerful men or corporations in their industry denying it ever happened, covering it up and possibly throwing money around is a well used and exercised mechanism to holding on to a reputation.

I hope the FBI come down on them like a ton of bricks, cause hacking a big company like valve and stealing stuff like CC numbers isn't a crime if it's on the<i> internet!</i>

seriously.. this guy is a ######bag. I don't care if he is exposing flaws - threatening to release credit card information is just pathetic and I'm really angry that I might have to cancel mine.

He deserves jail time for this, he's handling it like an immature little sh**

I'm thinking that they probably were hacked, but having the Particle Demo isn't proof. Gabe Newell (and probably other Valve people) will send you it if you email him with a good reason.

I'm particularly suspicious about it. At first I went "Oh crap", then I thought- "Wait a second. 9 Million? Yeah, definite hoax. Steam was confirmed to be 1/4th of HL2's sales, and its only gone further- there is no way there is only 9 million in there, unless they have it seperated into a dozen different places- and while that may be the case, it still seems unlikely as hell.

So THEM, can we get confirmation/non here? <3
  • ThansalThansal The New Scum Join Date: 2002-08-22 Member: 1215Members, Constellation
Hey, I forgot we have an inside man!

the 9mill might just be the cyber cafes
  • TychoCelchuuuTychoCelchuuu Anememone Join Date: 2002-03-23 Member: 345Members
Right, I think the guy only got info on Cyber Cafes. Steam might not even save your credit card info; it makes you reenter it each time you buy something, at least. It might just use it for verification then discard it.

Not really. If he has a remotely crappy but retardedly plausible reason for microwaving his hard drive the police can't do crap. They haven't asked him that.

At least thats what I think, <i>but I could be wrong.</i> "I always do this with old hard drives - makes it so no one will get anything valuable when I throw it out, <b>YOU NEVER KNOW!</b>" If it saves him a six billion dollar lawsuit then shelling out cash for a new hard drive isn't a bad deal.

If the cops can physically go in and see/do the traceback from Valve's compies, that'll stack up. Electronic evidence DOES hold up in court, just not as easily.

Yes send him to prison. Time of sentence won't matter as long as you lock him in a cell with a 275 pound muscular cell mate named Bubba.
