no way. obs go down too fast and are always one of the first things to be hit to stop beaconing.
-have MT only work within a range of the obs. Like, an obs at the back of MS in Eclipse would cover till just shy of Powersub, or maybe even just past it. As such, it would make it much more worthwhile to get frontline obs' in hives, or wherever.
-have MT only work within a range of each marine
-have MT only work on the minimap, and then upgraded more for full (upgrades would be like 15 and then 25 or something)
-have MT only work within a range of each marine

I like this idea. It would permit alien ambushes, but only if they were set up enough ahead of time. The only problem is it might nerf MT compared to scent of fear. Sure SoF only works within a range but it also detects enemies constantly, not just when moving.

Your point? Marines can look around as they move, and can look before they leap into an area.
I so grossly hate how MT completely nullifies silence. I think silence should be the counter to motion tracking, or motion tracking should have to be re-researched for free and take half as much time when the observatory goes down. This way there are periods of time when marines are left without MT and destroying a cheap little building like the Obs actually means something.

MC's are usually the first chamber, meaning that you can get silence at the beginning of the game. MT is an upgrade which most commanders don't get till later in the game. So there is a decent amount of time to use silent wisely. Without MT marines will get dominated late game. MT is the counterbalance for SoF, thus meaning; if one goes, so does the other. MT and SoF should stay in the game.
PS. Obviously MT nullifies silence: MT stands for Motion Tracking, not Sound Tracking.

He didn't say that it doesn't make sense that it nulls silence, he said he hates that it does...I have to agree, really. Cloaking hides you from MT as well, but I really don't want to use two of my upgrades just to be able to sneak up on someone.

the team has to protect the player with the motion tracker - unless the comm hands out a s'load of them
commander dropped, handheld motion tracker FTW

Definitely for this idea...
*Oh god they are comming closer! Where are they?!*

Good idea.
Any opinions on using this <i>advanced obs</i> idea to require a re-research of phase tech?

Does this mean you just have one marine looking at a MT and not fighting? Good luck on a pub server getting the players to comunicate that info to the other players. And if they do when does the com get to speak? Currently I feel there is nothing wrong with the MT system at the moment and the changes suggested (while not without merit) would cause bigger problems.
1. It only works in the direction that your moving/looking in so aliens (skulks) are more than capable of sneaking up behind you.
2. A cloaked/silence alien does not show on motion traking if they walk.
3. Most players just use silence for skulks only and MT comes later anyway.
4. Sneaking aliens should have to move slowly as normaly a solo alien vs vanilla marine its the alien that gets the XP.
Also if you have both MT AND ST your probably on the offensive winning anyway.
Too drastic. Try another approach. Some ideas already;

I don't know I how I missed that. Those are some good suggestions actually. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
I don't know if it becomes a code nightmare to figure out how quiet things are, and also should a walking onos really still be quiet (without silence).
