Sid has the bestest ship names evar =p

my 2 ships so far (one refinanced thanks to BM) are the Isla Nublar and the Elsa Nublar.

why do some guns require 'skill' and some not? isn't it all a question of clicking 'orbit' and 'fire'? where's the skill come in? =p

Transversal velocities vs gun tracking speeds. If you are flying straight towards a ship it is very likely to hit you, no matter your speed because it's guns don't have to adjust much. However if you are approaching a ship by flying at an angle to it (ex: flying towards a point above the ship) it's guns have to track faster, making them less likely to hit. When you are dealing with somebody in a fast ship who tries to take advantage of your slow tracking speeds, the skill comes into play. You have to know which direction to fly your ship to counter-act their maneuver and lower their transversal. I think CCP has a flash animation somewhere that illustrated this better.

    <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/guide/en/g26.asp" target="_blank">Gun Tracking Guide</a>

    <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/guide/en/g27.asp" target="_blank">Missile Guide</a>

Those two guides show you how to optimize your missile and turret usage.

And eediot, Some caldari ships get bonus's to missiles and other to hybrids. For example the kestrel gets a 10% kinetic damage bonus and 5% to thermal, EM and explosive damage for missiles. Whereas the Merlin gets 10% to optimal range of hybrid weapons (blasters or rails) and 5% to shield resistances per level of Caldari Frigate.

Since the merlin has no inherent missile bonus, you're better off utilizing the bonus that you DO get, so use the range to your advantage. Fit 150mms and standard launchers and fit a stasis webber so you can hold down any frigates at 10km from you so they dont get any closer, and you can blast away at them with your turrets and missiles which outrange the enemy ship (for example a pulse laser using punisher or a blaster incursus)

If the enemy can't get to you, they can't damage you. Of course, this is only one example of one scenario... if there was a cruiser with light EM missiles, webber, scrambler and drones you would be screwed in a merlin. Very screwed.

Also: The attribute implants are very handy. If you can afford the implants, (and don't lead a particularly dangerous life... or are very good at getting your pod out of bad situations) then get them. They DO help.

I realized two things today. First, I don't take nearly as many screenshots as I should. Also, shooting POS fittings with a merlin is pretty pointless. Also lol Lead S.

They like to pretend that the mods they're running on their cruisers are so critically important to goonswarm intel that they should be state secrets. Apparently they have a lot of enemies. Well, that's true enough, I can't blame the enemies for not liking them. However, they don't exactly need information on individual goonswarm blobbers to blow them out of the sky. It's pretty much just pretending they mean a lot more than they do. I was flying through lowsec in a kestrel while playing the guitar. I wasn't paying attention and flew into a gatecamp. The idiots were incompetent and I escaped [even without WCS] to planet 1, where I resumed playing guitar and laughed it off. A few seconds later I realised that somebody was already at planet 1 and I'd been unlucky. Total cost: 200k isk for kestrel, 200k isk for being podded.

The worst thing was that the gatecampers turned out to be ASCN. I was so embarrassed when I found out <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> Except for the fact that they're horribly incompetent, it wasn't a bad gatecamp in terms of ships - a drake, a harbinger, a brutix, a nighthawk, a hurricane and a rifter. The harbinger was the one at planet 1 that podded me. Doi... lesson learned, pay attention in low sec. I could have lost an expensive ship or an implant, if I'd had one.

Nope, was 0.3. The rifter was just there to loot I imagine. The other ships can tank sentries no problem, except for maybe the harbinger -- which was probably why it was at planet 1.

I've run into people multiple times who fly big ships with smaller weapons. I don't have enough fingers to count the number of un-insured battlecruisers I've blown up that were fitted with small weapons and standard missiles. I took down a gallente BC that had 3 small drones, the guy said he just wanted a bigger ship and was still getting the skills to outfit it correctly. He also didn't have insurance OR the money to pay my modest ransom. Pew pew pew.

They aren't AS good as one would hope a cruise missile packing frigate would be, but give them credit. They get the bonus that allows their cruise missiles to be less effected by the sig radius of a ship, so with good cruise missile and stealth bomber skills people are able to 1 volley AFs, it just requires a bit of pre-planning. Such as, first missile is EM to break shield, and other 2 are explosive to break armor and hull, etc.
