Do people even care about stuff that small on obvious newbs, though? I mean, what could they get out of it?
Being a new guy in a frigate in low sec is asking to get shot up. the reason is, people who aren't pirates think that pirates won't shoot at new guys. this leads to cunning young men carrying millions of isk on a 3 day old character. eventually some one shoots them and discovers 200 million isk in their cargo hold. This needless to say starts making pirates shoot every one because ammo is cheap and sometimes, you find huge amounts of iskes.
On the bright side , wandering in 0.0 early costs almost nothing. You can manage to buy cheap enough T1 frigates to make a profit from your insurance , counting modules and clone costs. That's much time spent warping around empty systems , but you will find loot or people eventually. Of course , you don't want to find people - having anyone show up on your overview is bad...

EVE is a PVP game, even if you never shoot at anybody else. It's competition on the market, competition to see who can dominate a high-sec complex. It's all about either competition or co-operation.
And I think that with the Revelations patch, any pilot who does not have 800,000 Skill points will be automatically bumped up to 800,000 SP, since they changed the new character creation page. And trust me, a LOT of corps would be more then happy to have an 800k SP pilot with them, since with 800k SP you can actually be useful for several things. Not that 80k SP pilots don't have uses, they just have less of them.
Also, as far as I know rigs won't allow you to put new weapon slots on your ship, so if you have 5 turret slots and 2 missile slots, you'll never get more then 5 turret slots and 2 missile slots no matter what rigs you use (I may be wrong, but I don't remember ever reading this about the rigs). Rigs only make your ship more effective at the detriment of something else. More speed for less armor, or vice versa.
One other thing. In EVE PVP has both losses for the victim and gains for the victimizer, whatever was on your ship (most of it anyway) will become the property of the victimizer. Unlike WoW's risk-less and loss-less (and many would say gainless) PVP system, more akin to a FPS shoot-em-up then a persistent world.

My understanding of this is different. The devblog was quite clear that you could mod the types of mounts for weapons systems. Furthermore, ingame I see that there is a whole set of weapon mount rigging specializations. I just think it would be awesome to fit a Catalyst with some missiles instead of it just being a gunboat. Thats my short-term goal.

The potential for gain however is quite high. If your group of cheaply T1 fitted cruisers can take out a completely T2 or Faction fitted Battleship, then you and your mates can make a real profit from that, considering one faction module would probably pay for all your cruisers and their mods. Of course if your opponent blows you up instead, well bad luck, but you only lose a few cruisers and cheap mods. You don't *have* to fit the best mods that you can fly. Just fit what works if you plan on PVP. If you're rich then you can worry about putting in faction/t2 mods.
It's not the fact that "when my tristan blows up I'll be out 50% of what I put into it" It's "If my tristan doesn't blow up and it manages to kill this thorax, with the help of my friend in his incursus and my other friend in his atron I can make some decent cash or some great cash depending on what the thorax was fitted with. And It's GREAT fun!"
i used to make my cash doing npc bs's in 0.0 with a dominix
Most of the money didn't actualy come from the bounties. You really need to have a hauler pick up the loot from them too. Sell what you can, reprocess the rest and sell the minerals.
an sansha bs worth only 500-1mil can drop a heavy diminishing nos that can easily sell for 6-7 mil. I used to get 4 or 5 of them every night. Picking up the loot easily triples the cash you're making.
You really gota have other people to play with though. I spent most of my time flying alone and eventualy got tired of the hassle of trying to bring a battleship through 4 or 5 gatecamps and losing ships to gangs that i simply had no chance whatsoever of winning against. I tried joining a few corps but never found one with people i liked :/
I was looking forward to the myrmidon though. Drone carrier bc <3. They gimped it's bay but at least it looks sexy.
omg I finally took the plunge and downloaded the free trial... sooo confusing. I did the tutorial for about 45 minutes and the progress bar suggested I was only about half done, so I turned it off for now. if a game's tutorial has to be an hour or longer, it should be a red flag to the developers that the game's a little too confusing -_-

Psh. The tutorial is so much easier now. When I first started playing they just dropped you out in space, gave you a quick intro on how to target and shoot a drone, then let you on your merry way.
Im really considering starting up my account, money was just such an issue though. I think Ill sell my character for a few bil isk ( 10+ mil skill points, caldari stuff) then start over. My WoW addiction needs to be offset by something.

Actually I've only ever played as a pirate, and it's not necessarily the monetary benefit. Most pirates don't see a whole lot of action, and our whole basis of attack is "superior numbers, strength, and surprise". Frigates are typically a very low risk attack, unless they're an ambush/bait. Thus a lot of pirates kill frigates simply because they cost nothing to destroy, because there aren't many other ships around, and because not killing it gains you nothing. A good 70% of it is bloodlust - you don't expect or hope to get anything from killing frigates, but so long as you DON'T kill any frigates, your chances are effectively 0.
Hi guys, I've been playing EVE-O for about six months. It's fun but I still hate it.
Cool game but boring as hell at times. It's fun to pop on and go mucking about in 0.0 with whatever I feel like losing at the time (alone or in a small gang), but MAN is NPCing/ISK farming boring (seriously it makes my eyes bleed).
So yeah I'm "Nubmart" in game, so add me to your addressbook sometime, if for no other reason than to hunt me down and pod me. It'll probably be the most fun I'd had all day (I'M NOT KIDDING, NPCING IS TERRIBLE, in fact I haven't found a single reliable way to make ISK that I've found any bit enjoyable).
may i say that the most fun is still pirating some guy and then convo'ing him and offering to sell him the same ship he just lost for the insurance money and a little mark up.
*pew pew*
*booom*
"so, I hear you are looking for a new Maller. I have one on that market cheap." "screw you, that's not cheap" "Well good luck with your pod, my boy here likes to shoot folks." "OK, but I'm only spending 20% above market"
*Glee*
of course this doesn't always work, but its a good racket if you can set it up:)
Replace "Maller" with "Improved Cloaking Device II" and yeah, you have good times.

My WoW addiction needs to be offset by something.
omg I finally took the plunge and downloaded the free trial... sooo confusing. One of the reasons I like EVE so much is that it is so very complicated <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
Say Hi to me
Character Name: TigersmithGU
I am slightly upset that the new patch bumped one of my characters to over 900k SP, since 900k is the limit of the free clone.

Yes. You have a reason to complain about getting free skillpoints. You're the best.

Prior to the patch that character had 26k.

*pew pew*
*booom*
"so, I hear you are looking for a new Maller. I have one on that market cheap."
"screw you, that's not cheap"
"Well good luck with your pod, my boy here likes to shoot folks."
"OK, but I'm only spending 20% above market"
*Glee*
of course this doesn't always work, but its a good racket if you can set it up:)
I had more written but the internet ate my post. Oh well <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
