Lad, host a game and select "Sandbox" as the victory condition. Tick ready, and start the game. You can play around it now, without fear of being annihilated. Enjoy.

Tried earlier, system specs not high enough. Not surprised.
Maybe in a year I'll have a new computer.

Yeah, I'm holding off for now. I don't think my Radeon 9600 will really let me play the game. Until then, all my RTS goodness is concentrated in Warcraft III.

Well i've been at 4 minutes in the fileplanet download queue for the last 2 hours, so I think it might be a bit broken. This makes me a sad panda.

It isn't limited to paying users, laddie. You just have to register for a free account. Thats how I downloaded mine. Good luck.

Well, it seemed exactly like Total Annihilation to me. I loved TA, so I love Supreme Commander.

Yeah what spinviper said. It's TA, but new and shiny. And who's to complain about that?

I'm so playing this. I loved TA. The only thing I thought sucked was the resource system.

The physics were amazing for that time though.

Or, you get several tech 3 engineers to assist the launcher, and it's done in way less then 5 minutes.

This will be the ultimate lan party RTS. Too bad I don't have lan parties often enough.

I found out the res system amazing. You have more than one option to get to build something: rely on a big stockpile of energy and metal: building will slowly decrease but that's OK seeing as how you've got huge reserves, or rely on huge quantities of metal and energy sources: building will not even take resources out of your pool. you can mix and match to your liking, hell you can even change during construction. It's quite lovely to start building something before you have enough resources to build it, and tweak your resource intakes accordingly. For example, you start off a construction with a construction aircraft, ask the commander to help in for a bit to go faster, then when your resource pool goes down, take the aircraft off and tour around a bit to gather some metal off of nodes.

It's much more interesting than "pay X amount of Y, and we'll start doing this", then again it's maybe because I love this game.

The coolest thing about TA's resources (and Supreme Commander by extension) is it's "build and forget" quality. You find the resources, build the extractors, and then focus on combat until something attacks it, if it ever does. They're aren't any stupid harvesters that decide of their own volition to move on to the next batch of resources CLEAR ACROSS THE DAMNED MAP, through several enemy bases on each run, when there's more resources right behind your base. Hate.

This game takes the cake for haveing the best nuclear explosion ever. C&C generals did it pretty good, original TA had the idea as well. but this is just insane, BOOOOOOOOM.

Damn.

Just rebuilt my PC, but I never got the RAM from the shop because they'd underpriced it and so withdrew it from my order (by £14, Savastore.com FTL). Because I'd budgeted the parts right down to the wire I couldn't really afford anything comparable so I did some early Christmas shopping figuring I could survive until payday on 512MB RAM.

Wrong.

I found out one of my paired 256MB sticks has mysteriously died, so I'm left with a measly 256MB bottlenecking what's otherwise a very respectable rig (A8N32-SLi Deluxe {with heatpipe}, X1900GT, Athlon 64 3800+ with an ultra-quiet Zalman, WD Caviar 250GB SATA, Enermax Liberty 500W PSU).

Is there any hope of me being able to run S'upComm? with only 256MB RAM? If not I'm gonna have to wait until this Thursday before I can really lay into anything even slightly resembling a PC game. I played through 3 hours of Eternal Silence on the GC today already! Gah!

P.S. I tried running the Dark Messiah demo and it wasn't pretty (I mean that both literally AND metaphorically).

Oooh ouch. 256 really isn't going to cut it. The games are going to be sad, as if a million voices suddenly cried out in pain, and were suddenly silenced. Your best bet? Uh, HL1 based games. I mean, 256 sucks.
• StakhanovStakhanov Join Date: 2003-03-12 Member: 14448Members
Supreme Commander runs on my PC , with 512 MB. I don't know if it could run on 256 MB , but don't even think about it. My config is somewhat weak , so I ran it with graphics at lowest - but still performance is measured in seconds between frames , rather than frames per second... a pity , couldn't enjoy the cool units animations. Also got an ugly render bug messing up their polygons whenever they moved , so they looked more like porcupines than metal beasts.

Nevertheless , it's obvious that Supreme Commander will rule strategy games.
