Dude... it's flipping shoes. And if you look at the picture, they're not exactly dressed poorly, either. Give it a flipping rest.

It's stupid the girl's relatives freaked out about it. It's stupid this is in the news at all. I mean, christ, a couple pairs of shoes (and not even ratty ones at that) 'representing' an entire major university? Give me a break.

See, THIS is exactly where the young ladies screwed up ... they wore nice dresses, yet they wore flip flops. That's like a guy wearing a suit then putting sneakers or mocs on. The 2 just don't go together.

Unless you're with a woman. Then the dynamic changes completely.

Its so much easier being a guy. You see a women walk into a store, and they go around trying on/looking at everything. A guy walks in, picks up what he came there to buy, and pays for it.

May sound stereotypical, but its mostly true.

Meh, the flip flops, I don't think it was a good idea to where flip flops to meet the president. They flip-flops are kinda like cheap shoes, plus those are ugly. Plus, flip-flops aren't formal, they just aren't. You wouldn't be wearing a simple tee-shirt to go see the president?

Flipflops are also known as shower thongs ... you wear them from a public shower to your locker to keep from contracting athelete's feet. They are also very popular to wear to the beach. As a rule they would be considered very informal wear.

I brushed through your reference and found nothing to refute a well known medical fact: excessive barefooting will wreak havoc on your feet, particularly if you have normal to high arches. I have a wife. She has a massive bucket o' shoes. There are 'flip-flops' in there that make my nicest shoes pale in comparison and certainly are not "informal." They look about like what these girls were wearing. And what separates them from the supposed 'acceptible' shoes? A half-inch heel? ****.

Even if they did wear shower thongs, it's still not newsworthy and still stupid that people are making a big deal about this.

I'd like to see proof of that, if you can offer it to me. I don't find it very logical for man to have feet the way they are if it causes problems by having them that way.

People with normal or in particular high arches are prone to plantar faciaitis. This possible injury can be minimalized by proper arch support, certainly not attainable by continuous mobilization without supportive footwear. If you'd like to discuss this further I recommend creating a thread in Discussions, but be forwarned - the old man KNOWS feet, foot injuries, and foremost running shoes. [/off topic]

That being said, if a person were to mill about constantly wearing nothing but flipflops, they would certainly be in for a number of related injuries as already noted.

It's just common courtesy you uncivilized crudes. You don't wear casual clothing to a formal event. And for the next couple hundred years, flip flops and sandels will be casual, because tastes like that don't change over night.

It doesn't matter if it's the president or your highschool principle. It's a matter of old fashioned honor, pride, and respect.

Even if they did wear shower thongs, it's still not newsworthy and still stupid that people are making a big deal about this.

The President is constantly in the public's eye, and anyone who socializes with him is also. One of the girl's brother emailed her regarding this and the rest is history. It was recently brought up about a girl's softball team who was invited to the Whitehouse a while back, and they dressed down and wore sneakers. More on this on the 6 o'clock news folks... KFS, note Rob's reply as I pretty much agree with him.

I don't even LOOK at peoples shoes.

I looked at those sandals, and some of them look pretty damn formal.

flip flops, open foot sandals, who cares. Let the girls live life while they are young, they can always look back and cringe later. It's not like they are there for a formal reason. "hey, we are good at a sport, the president wants to congratulate us and get a photo op. Oh, and we are also going to draw up legislation to lower national debt and lobby it to congressmen, then arbitrate the middle east peace discussions."
If I were the president, god knows I would want people to be comfortable in my house (one of the many reasons I won't be president).

A planned, invited, and photo opped event congradulating anyone about anything anytime is always a formal event. Sandels are not formal footwear, no matter how much we want them to be.

And aside from the mere respectful implications of this, it may hurt their chances getting a job at a very formal or traditional company. One of those places where you gotta wear a suit into the office or else. What's this incident say to that employer? "This girl doesn't know how to present herself."

    It's ALL about image.

    its all just perspective.

The girls made a concious effort to go out, and purchase clothes they felt were appropriate for the occassion. If anything, the act of spending money, just for a single event, shows more respect then dusting off some dress shoes and putting them on. They saw nothing wrong with they way they were dressed, and ment no intentional disrespect by it.

And what happens if they don't respect him? Should they not wear flip-flops anyway?

Besides, if he actually looks down there will end up being a photograph of him staring at some girls ****, he wouldn't have even seen their knees for god sake.

Finally and most importantly, I can understand someone being an expert in shoes... but to be a shoe expert! Ludicrous!

You miss the point entirely. Even in disrespect of the one who is giving you an honor, you only make yourself look like a reject by deliberately dressing trashy. Not saying they wore torn trash bags, but those shoes do not fit attire for such an occasion, no matter who happens to be president. No matter if they were being honored by the most communist Prime minister of Russia during the height of the god damned cold war. It's taste and eloquence.

    Two things come to mind:

Their mothers did a ****-poor job of dressing them that morning.

Northwestern must be an agricultural university
