I'd recommend a Pontiac Firebird. A buddy's got one, doesn't take care of it... and it's still pretty strong. Even as an automatic. And with all the space in the engine bay, there's plenty of room to work... unlike my puzzlebox. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> On the surface, it honestly looks about as complicated as a VW Bug, with some extra parts. The tranny might be a pain, but I've never had the chance to see one of those (five speed newer than '69) laid open.
Speaking of which, my tranny's starting to have problems now. Some groan in third and up, and getting off at an offramp, the side-shunt for 1/2 was stuck. Refused to move. I'm going to have to take the shifter boot off and see if that idiot did any damage to the mechanism itself... maybe replace the bushings. Anything more complicated than that though, and I've gotta leave it at a specialist. And I can't afford a full tranny rebuild right now. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I'm not sure why you are calling it pollution garbage, considering it improves the gas mileage and efficency of the engine in general (there are exceptions, read: catalytic converter).
However, 1992 was one of the last years required for all automobiles(to not have emisson controls), I stated one of the last because some companies adopted it earlier, example honda 1977, toyota 1980. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I called it garbage because it robs horesepower, it costs a lot of money to fix, and it requires a lot of workarounds to compensate for.
I'm not really interested in the last year autos HAD to have it by. Rather, I am interested in when the Big 3 first started incorporating anti-pollution devices onto their engines (no, the PCV valve doesn't count).

Well, it appears my timetable has been advanced by a day an a half... have a buddy going up to the Bay Area tonight, so I'm going to caravan up, take a long hard look at those wheels, and if they're still solid, pick 'em up and drive them back down. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Unfortunately, I'll have to take the Mirage. Better gas mileage, good tires... but I'm not sure about reliability, given that it has a CEL on the fuel pump relay. On the up side, MP3 player and 14" subs mean that I get to be LOUD across the desert. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Oh, and forgot to mention, it's a set of four Tenzo RS-5 rims, powdercoated white, with tires that have about 70% tread left. The rims alone are around $200 each, new, and I'm getting the full package for 550. Only damage is a minor curbage mark on one, that can be taken out with wet-sanding.

Its now in red dirt country (aka mount isa .. middle of nowhere in australia) The only thing here i have to worry about is my tyres hitting something like they did yesterday woke up to find a nail stickin outa my back tyre ... there goes my spare . how i ahve to spend around 700$ au to get 5 new ones cause the ones i have now are shonky

Okay... well, the trip was altered again. As soon as I typed that, my friend called. His car broke down on the 605-N, and wouldn't start. Begin frantic dash to get there and see if I can help get him up to my mechanic. Two hours later, I'm convinced that he needs a flatbed. Which arrives 15 minutes later. We get it to my mechanic, and try jumpstarting it (as it's 2am, and the mechanic is closed). It turns over.... and sounds like someone shaking a box full of nails. My original estimate was either a slipped timing belt (allowing the cylinders to smack the valves... new head, new pistons, or new engine), or a foreign object (new piston and everything asociated), or that the lifters had not re-lubricated, as he dumped all his oil on the freeway.
He piled into my car with all of his stuff (TIGHT fit, not much cargo space in DSMs, even with the back seat relegated to cargo-only!) and we took off northbound. Managed to get there in time for him to go to work... only to find out he'd been taken off the schedule for the next week, as of last week. But no one told him. Mechanic called. Looks like he suffered the bane of 92.5 and newer DSMs, even if he was driving a Subaru. Crankwalk. The crank bearings took a **** all over the place. New engine time.
Managed to get over to the guy's house without incident, and pick up the rims and tires (as well as relocate some spiders into my car... goodie). Easy-peasy. The hard part came in finding lugnuts. No one had the 'tuner' style that this thing required. Pain in the butt. So I'm stuck for ANOTHER day. Oh, and cut the living crap out of my finger when I went to wipe some junk 'off' my tire, which happened to be exposed steel belt. Tore out a good chunk, but left one or maybe two skin layers intact. I'm hoping no infection sets in.
Take it to a shop in the morning, and they flat-out refuse to mount the tires. Apparently the tire on one of them had a thin tread/sidewall meet, and it was exposed. He said that I'd get about 50 miles, maybe, before it blew out in a spectacular fashion, and then restated that he would NOT do anything to the wheels, as they were. Offered to sell me some Wynstars for $500, which are rather... junk. That's the right word. Even if they ARE ZR-rated, they're crap.
Went down the street, starting to panic... found a Just Tires, who had the original tires I was looking for in stock. Eagle F1 GS-D3. Y-rated cornering monsters with insanely high treadlife (for a performance radial). They were even on sale! Only... $818, installed. Well. Crap. I had about 3/4 of that in my bank account, as I still don't have my most recent paycheck. Oh, and did I mention the speeding ticket I received on my way up to SF? My first ever. I KNEW that car was going to get me into trouble. Oh, and I still have to pay rent. And I KNOW the gas stations haven't registered my withdrawals at the bank yet.
Enter a very-well-timed call from Dad. Who bails my sorry posterior out.
Five hours later, I'm on my way home. They had to get a runner to go grab the four they had from the warehouse. And due to a stocking problem, I was bumped up to the XL model for free... extra load capacity, sidewall rigidity, and so on that usually runs an extra fifty bucks a tire.
Now to let my finger heal while I think of an appropriate way to repay Dad in the future. I'm halfway thinking to find a gutted '68 Mustang and rebuild it, if I do end up getting into mechanic school.
