I am just wondering does anyone know of good alternatives to M$ Word?
Just a random though that came up while I was writing my final year paper (15K words). The amount fo headache that M$ Word has caused me through my uni life is unbearable.
And when I mean good alternative i mean an alternative that is realiable to use to write up your class work on. One that allows easy insertion of footnotes, handles tables and images well. Whatever happened to Wordstar i wondered back in the old days of DOS <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I might decide to pursue a business plan to topple M$ Words domination like how Firefox is toppling IE. I've typed a 7,500 word email into notepad. It didn't handle it too well, stupid linebreaks.
seconded, and the 2.0 beta of OpenOffice seems alot easier to use.

I'd suggest Sun Office rather than Open Office (although I use OO rather than SO). OO feels a little clunky and occasionally unstable, and I've heard very good things about SO.

It has flaws. Get over them.
A prospective employer isn't going to give a **** that you have experience using Wordstar. They want experience with tools that people actually use. If you're having that much difficulty with Word, I'd suggest that you post your specific problem and get help with it. Although in 14 years of using Word for business and personal use, I've never found much to complain about.
AbiWord was nice, but it's a little weak. It's good for typing plain text documents only; there aren't a lot of formatting options.
StarOffice was the previous version of OpenOffice: I don't think StarOffice is offered any longer. Is it?

Well that really sums up on why Microsoft Word is lacking. It has got so complex that you need a whole computer course to learn all its functions. Even with this complexity what does Microsoft does? They make the program self-correct errors that THEY think users make by default. I know you can disable it and so on but in terms of usability its really bad because it doesnt give the freedom that I think most users percieve they want.
I do this with a lot of important documents. I'm dead serious here.
Also, if you want a quick-ish .doc reader, WordPad is okay. However, Word has the most powerful (though quirky and often weird) formatting system.
