<div class="IPBDescription">for a windows PC</div> Edit: CRAP...i meant WORD...Microsoft WORD....hope a mod change the title when possible <span style='color:orange'>Taken care of <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> -- Marik</span>

I am just wondering does anyone know of good alternatives to M$ Word?

Just a random though that came up while I was writing my final year paper (15K words). The amount fo headache that M$ Word has caused me through my uni life is unbearable.

And when I mean good alternative i mean an alternative that is realiable to use to write up your class work on. One that allows easy insertion of footnotes, handles tables and images well. Whatever happened to Wordstar i wondered back in the old days of DOS <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I might decide to pursue a business plan to topple M$ Words domination like how Firefox is toppling IE. Hehe well its a dream so far <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Why replace Word? It's like the only useful thing from Microsoft, which even still is useless... I see your point.

    I've typed a 7,500 word email into notepad. It didn't handle it too well, stupid linebreaks.

    seconded, and the 2.0 beta of OpenOffice seems alot easier to use.

    Sif notepad; use <a href='http://www.vim.org/index.php' target='_blank'>vim</a> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

    I'd suggest Sun Office rather than Open Office (although I use OO rather than SO). OO feels a little clunky and occasionally unstable, and I've heard very good things about SO.

    You, my good sir, need the one that doesn't add silly Windows formatting to the background.

    I present.... <a href='http://www.textpad.com/' target='_blank'>Textpad</a>, or failing that, VIM.

    Edlin, quite obviously...
    Yeah, OpenOffice is probably the way to go. Seems to read .doc files almost perfectly as well.

    Nothing is a <b>good</b> alternative to using MS Word.

    It has flaws. Get over them.

    A prospective employer isn't going to give a **** that you have experience using Wordstar. They want experience with tools that people actually use. If you're having that much difficulty with Word, I'd suggest that you post your specific problem and get help with it. Although in 14 years of using Word for business and personal use, I've never found much to complain about.

    I used OpenOffice for a while, and I didn't like it. There were too many little things that annoyed me. For example, I spent about half an hour trying to figure out how to change the default margins from 1.25 inches to 1 inch and couldn't figure it out. There was also the issue of quickly changing to typing subscripts, then going back to regular text (easy in Word, difficult in OO). Those are just a few examples of things that really annoyed me about OO. It is free, though.

    I'm going to jump in here and add my vote to try out OpenOffice. It's a good alternative to Word. OpenOffice has given me less headaches than Word, which makes it a keeper in my opinion.

    AbiWord was nice, but it's a little weak. It's good for typing plain text documents only; there aren't a lot of formatting options.

    StarOffice was the previous version of OpenOffice: I don't think StarOffice is offered any longer. Is it?

    As many have said, try openoffice. It is almost completely identicle to word in every way, right down to the interface.

    Um...

    Learning to use a word processor isn't like learning a programming language, especially since MS Word has become the de facto standard. Surely if you can use one word processor you can use 'em all?

    Well that really sums up on why Microsoft Word is lacking. It has got so complex that you need a whole computer course to learn all its functions. Even with this complexity what does Microsoft does? They make the program self-correct errors that THEY think users make by default. I know you can disable it and so on but in terms of usability its really bad because it doesnt give the freedom that I think most users percieve they want.

    I recommend loading Notepad, turning on Word Wrap and then jamming out whatever you need. It's easy, simple, takes up insanely little processor time (a big plus when compiling a map or waiting to respawn in America's Army), and doesn't have any quirky "auto-correct" functions that are useful in many situations but hideously annoying in other situations. Once you're done in Notepad, send it to Word for formatting.

    I do this with a lot of important documents. I'm dead serious here.

    Also, if you want a quick-ish .doc reader, WordPad is okay. However, Word has the most powerful (though quirky and often weird) formatting system.
