You forgot 'Victory!' with Sylvester Stallone in that POW camp. Though, I'm not sure who's side I'm helping by mentioning it . Baseball has all the good movies, most football movies are boring anyway, because they're canned and predictable, at least the baseball movies are funny...except waterboy, there's the...okay-ish football-type movie.

I think there was also a soccer movie called 'The Ladybugs'...actually I'm not quite sure what it was about, because I saw 2 previews for it and saw about 5 minutes of it on TV and it was so horrendous my TV imploded into a black hole...in fact, I'm being sucked in right now...

...well, okay, it was just terrible. But football movies suck too (especially that one with Keanu Reeves ).

footballs movies do not suck.... they have good messages like

    Teamwork - all of them
Importence of Education - like... ummm... I'm sure thers one
Anti- steriods - like varsity blues
Anti - Racism - likein Remember the Titans
Never giving up - like in the little gaints

but there are a lot of funny baseball movies out there too....

You know... I often wonder how much grief would have been saved in internet forums around the world and trans-atlantic conversations if the people who came up with these naming conventions had simply made it fashionable to define the two sports by these words:

    AMERICAN FOOTBALL
    INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL

Seriously. Just throw away 'soccer' and suddenly everyone is happy because you pretty much need to specify what kind of football it is to define between the two after that

    Yes, barbaric.

Sweet Jesus, how do you defend a FULL CONTACT sport ("American Football" or "Rugby-Lite") by claiming it's NON-CONTACT opposition (Football, or "Soccer") to be barbaric.

Also, comparing movies made about both sports is pretty much a fruitless endeavour. Yes, we know you Americans have one of the biggest film industries in the world, whilst it isn't the biggest, it still dwarfs the English, German, French and Spanish movie industry on it's own. Also, using movies to justify an activity is a generally ridiculous idea too. I watched Romper Stomper recently and i thought it was an excellent movie, and it's pretty critically acclaimed also, but that doesn't mean that Skinheads, Neo-Nazis and racism are all good things. And yeah, that is a bit exaggerated, but it's the same gyst.

And V Man, there's something unsettling about a "Man's Game" that involves wearing the shortest of shorts.

If THIS is what floats your boat, many professional (NFL) football players don't wear ANYthing under their pants other than their jockstraps. Yes, you can see a player's rosey buttcheeks if he's wearing white pants and bends over.

The problem is Europeans do, in the majority, hate American football, and its a strong feeling that a lot of people hold. Which is awfully strange if you ask me.
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
I dunno. I watched the superbowl finals in '03. With other europeans. At their initiative. 'Twas fun, except that the game had only an hour of playtime, yet took four hours to complete. Way too slowly paced. We went to bed after three hours, because the game was obviously decided already. So, if they could have condensed it a little (by, for example, not showing commericals half the time), it would have been great. That's my only real quarrel with the game.
I mean, I just call the games football and american football. If you say "football," it's football, the kind you play with only your feet (and pretty much every other part of your body too, except for the arms. I mean, what's up with that? Sometimes the game turns into headball for what seems like hours on end. The only relief comes when somebody inadvertently turns it into faceball. So much nosebleeding ). If you say "american football," it's american football, the one that resembles rugby. Where can I go wrong? I also enforce it by deliberately misunderstanding people if they say "football" when they mean "american football."

"Yeah, so we were playing a little football, and I caught the ball and ran for..."
"wth? you're not allowed to touch the ball with your hands in football!"

Oh that reminds me, the other day they were talking about the Superbowl Championship or something like that on ITV (English TV Channel). New England Vs someone else.

Hey, if it’s spread far enough for an English TV Channel to advertise it, an initiative may be being made to increase popularity in Europe

Superbowls are famous for their commercials, not just the content but the price for 30 seconds which was $2,000,000 usd.

Even as bad as this year's were, they were not infamous.

Come on you guys had to of loved the 'Office Linebacker' commercials for Reebok... with Triple T(Terrible Terry Tate). Oh man i love those, I have them on my computer and watch them every now and then for a good laugh.
Infact I was just showing them to a friend the other day who is a pure soccer fan to the core who doesn't like football(I live in Greece) and even he found them funny.

Yeah, I loved him Though, isnt that quite rare? Mostly it's flashing colours with a product name.

Most of the commercial time is taken up by teams returning to one end of the field or other (after a score or for a kickoff), a timeout or an injury. Only a few seconds is actually cutting into actual play time...which they usually gloss over by skipping pictures of the huddle and using more than 7 seconds lead time on the live game.

...if that makes sense, I think I worded it a tad wrong.

I'm also getting a bit tired of the anti-American/anti-European/anti-YourMom stuff going on in this thread. Bah, be more original with your cross-country insults. "American film industry sucks" bah, we've known that one for 10 years - but you guys still show them in theatres over there (I'd say it went down hill a little after Jurassic Park and a lot before Dude, Where's my Car?).

Soccer is generally a filler sport for younger people over here, kind of like how parents don't want their scrawny little kid to end up on the bottom of a 1,000 pound pile of kids looking for a ball the size of their heads. The worst you usually get in soccer (...football, ) is generally kicked shins (because they usually don't use headbutts). I stopped playing soccer when the coach got all picky (with an experienced team) saying stuff like, "if you're the goalie and you've caught the ball if you back up like this [steps backwards into goal box], then it still counts for the other team" yea, thanks, we've been doing this for 4 years, I think we know how to play...

    Anyway...

Football = strategy (tactics during a play)
Soccer = tactics (strategy before the game)

Kind of like turn-based and RTS games (okay, maybe not quite like them), you can like one, you can like both or neither, but no need to knock the other.

Staying on topic here, and being an American, I'd like to say that nothing is wrong with soccer whatsoever. I prefer football simply because I played it all through school, and it's a much more physical game.

its not possible to compare soccer and Football, its like comparing Apples and Oranges.

Soccer and football both have emesne team work and stradagy invovled in the game, but each has a diffrent way of the sports execution I believe that both sports are both very noble and good indeed.

but the real question is, if you put up the Best football team agaisnt the best soccer team in some kind of competion , see who would come out ahead

Somehow I can't picture soccer players prancing about the field wearing all that "heavy armor".
