We basicly call football (soccer <_<) "voetbal". Voet means foot and bal obviously means ball. As for the American version.. I guess we just say American football in english, as I can't recall having a dutch word for it.

Our conjugations are incredibly stupid, the number of different grammatical forms there are is incredible, it's just a mess.....does any other country still study its native language in college?

Plus, since it has no real cases; if you say something with a subject, verb and an object, native speakers can easily decipher what you mean.
Legitimate sentences: S---V-------DO---------IDO I kicked the ball to the dog. To the dog, I kicked the ball.
Understandable sentences: I kicked to the dog the ball. <-easily recognizable I to the dog kicked the ball. I the ball kicked to the dog. The ball kicked to the dog I. <- not so much that one. To the dog kicked I the ball. To the dog the ball I kicked.
Actually it's usually simpler than that, since you can just put a subject and a verb, and whatever you want after it...unlike many languages.
Plus the lack of cases means adjectives, articles (...except for that 'add an N if it comes before a word starting with a vowel sound'...but that's easy since you try to avoid double vowel sounds in most languages), adverbs and such all have one form, while verbs only have a couple forms.
It just get's complicated with different cases and long sentences.

If Russian had a latin alphabet, it'd probably be easiest (even though it's a bit of a pain to pronounce right), since you can basically throw words in any order and come out with a sentence as long as you have the right endings.

Now, I love soccer (played it for 3 years in college) - and one thing I know is that rugby fans will kick the rears of any football or soccer fans any day.

I consider myself a bit "in the know" on all the sports discussed here - having played most of them (I lived in New Zealand - so cricket and rugby are very familiar to me).
Actually, Grendel does do a good job at describing Football as "turn based" - there are so many breaks (one after each tackle) when the opposition can't do anything but stand around and catch their breath.
For those of you who think that pads = the wimpy, understand that in football almost everyone gets hit / tackled on every single play - unlike rugby where the "flow" of the game means that 3/4 of the people aren't even involved in the play (not a target for being tackled).
If you want to compair volence in football and violence in soccer - I think soccer takes the upper hand when it comes to "worse" injuries. I mean honestly, your trying to kick the ball out from somones legs without huring them? - sprained ankles are the norm - not to mention other forms of leg damage that can happen (broken kneecap anyone?)
However, ranking number 1 on my list of most volent sports - Aussie Rules Rugby. Think of it this way - the running back in football has to "kick" the ball into his hands every 3rd step. No pads, your foot is out in front of you every 3rd step, and the league is build around people who would rather cleat you in the face than say "Hi". Not to mention the points in the game where you are supposed to lift your own teammates above your head - sometimes they don't come down so gently.
As for cricket - it is baseball in 360 degrees with about 1/4 the action. Games go on for 4 days at times (with the occasional break for tea and crumpets), and some "batters" can stay in for over 100 runs without being "out" - eventually leaving the field out of sheer boredom.
As for pitchers (bowlers) forget them aiming for your head - they shoot for your shins (hence the giant pads down there). Not to mention, shane warne = the loose (for all you ausies out there - Marine)
I watched a cricket match the other day.... most boring thing ever. Now don't get me wrong, its great fun to play, I just can't stand watching it...apart from when the bowlers actually try to break the batters arms, I’ve heard so many crunches of bone from ball.... now that’s a violent sport.
Rugby, I love it.
Football is more dangerous than rugby if you ask me. The tackles in rugby are well organised and controlled; learning to take a tackle is the first thing you learn in rugby. In football you get broken feet, shins ankles, anything below the knees basically

American Football is an athlete's sport for athletes.
In rugby you can't tackle anyone without the ball or tackle above the neckline. This is one of the reasons we wear minimal padding whereas NFL and AFL players wear full padding. I won't be fool enough to say either sport is superior, as each is played to the highest level in its respective country (with Rugby being played on an international professional level.
I'd say that the huge amount of money you have to pay on all of the <s>graze protection</s> padding is probably what puts off any other country from playing it, I mean how much does a kid (like the one who flipped the coin for this year's SuperBowl) have to pay for all that stuff?

Hey, kwikloader when you played did your coach ever make you do gator/bear crawls...you know where you walk the whole field on all fours in full pads(for those that don't know pads really restrict the all fours walking movement and the shoulder pads and helmet throw off your center of gravity) without bending your knees and stopping every 5 yards to do pushups till he blow the whistle again? I've heard it's one the most difficult languages to learn. Don't know if that's true, but if it is, it would be kind of awesome.
We basicly call football (soccer <_<) "voetbal". Voet means foot and bal obviously means ball. As for the American version.. I guess we just say American football in english, as I can't recall having a dutch word for it.
I think English would be one of the easiest to form simple sentences in, and hardest to master (pretty sure it has the most words of any language - especially since it basically borrows whatever it wants from other languages). Plus, since it has no real cases; if you say something with a subject, verb and an object, native speakers can easily decipher what you mean.
Legitimate sentences:
S---V-------DO---------IDO
I kicked the ball to the dog.
To the dog, I kicked the ball.
Understandable sentences:
I kicked to the dog the ball. <-easily recognizable
I to the dog kicked the ball.
I the ball kicked to the dog.
The ball kicked to the dog I. <- not so much that one.
To the dog kicked I the ball.
To the dog the ball I kicked.
Actually it's usually simpler than that, since you can just put a subject and a verb, and whatever you want after it...unlike many languages.
Plus the lack of cases means adjectives, articles (...except for that 'add an N if it comes before a word starting with a vowel sound'...but that's easy since you try to avoid double vowel sounds in most languages), adverbs and such all have one form, while verbs only have a couple forms.
It just get's complicated with different cases and long sentences.

IMHO, US Football kicks arse. It's the only turn based sport I can think of. However, Ive stopped watching it because of the amount of advertising breaks. That and because being a Bengals' fan made me cry.

Actually, Grendel does do a good job at describing Football as "turn based" - there are so many breaks (one after each tackle) when the opposition can't do anything but stand around and catch their breath.
For those of you who think that pads = the wimpy, understand that in football almost everyone gets hit / tackled on every single play - unlike rugby where the "flow" of the game means that 3/4 of the people aren't even involved in the play (not a target for being tackled).
If you want to compair volence in football and violence in soccer - I think soccer takes the upper hand when it comes to "worse" injuries. I mean honestly, your trying to kick the ball out from somones legs without huring them? - sprained ankles are the norm - not to mention other forms of leg damage that can happen (broken kneecap anyone?)
However, ranking number 1 on my list of most volent sports - Aussie Rules Rugby. Think of it this way - the running back in football has to "kick" the ball into his hands every 3rd step. No pads, your foot is out in front of you every 3rd step, and the league is build around people who would rather cleat you in the face than say "Hi". Not to mention the points in the game where you are supposed to lift your own teammates above your head - sometimes they don't come down so gently.
As for cricket - it is baseball in 360 degrees with about 1/4 the action. Games go on for 4 days at times (with the occasional break for tea and crumpets), and some "batters" can stay in for over 100 runs without being "out" - eventually leaving the field out of sheer boredom.
As for pitchers (bowlers) forget them aiming for your head - they shoot for your shins (hence the giant pads down there). Not to mention, shane warne = the loose (for all you ausies out there - Marine)

American Football is an athlete's sport for athletes.
In rugby you can't tackle anyone without the ball or tackle above the neckline. This is one of the reasons we wear minimal padding whereas NFL and AFL players wear full padding. I won't be fool enough to say either sport is superior, as each is played to the highest level in its respective country (with Rugby being played on an international professional level.
I'd say that the huge amount of money you have to pay on all of the <s>graze protection</s> padding is probably what puts off any other country from playing it, I mean how much does a kid (like the one who flipped the coin for this year's SuperBowl) have to pay for all that stuff?
