Neither sport came before the other; both branched off of the same game. Second of all, you're assuming Americans want everyone else in the world to call football "soccer" and American football "football", which is SO not true. We would much prefer the rest of the world just does its own thing and leave us be, but no, <u>you</u> are the ones trying to impose your terms on us. "American footbal took over"? Took over what? As you all said yourself, it's only played in America, so why the hell do you all care what we call the game? It seems like you guys are being overly touchy about the name of a sport, imo. I'm sure there are plenty of things Americans came up with that are called something else in other countries. And I guarantee that no one in this country would get mad if people somewhere else started calling a hamburger a "meat pie" or something.
As I have proven with my "trap" as you so disdainfully call it, the name of the game doesn't matter. I could start calling baseball "Whack-a-Ball", and it wouldn't make a difference; when I go out to the diamond to play I'd still be playing baseball.

Then why do you insist on calling it football, and calling football itself soccer? It seems to matter not to you that the REST OF THE WORLD calls it football, just as long as you get to call a sport that's actually probably more connected to rugby than football whatever you want. You can't just... call something an existing name. Like if I got up and decided one day that hey! I don't want to call Marks and Spencers Marks and Spencers any more! Let's call it Burger King! Yeah!

Somebody made a reference to the high-scoring nature of American Football; this is indeed a reason why I like the game so much. (european) football and hockey most always end up with extremely low scores (2-1)... so even though a game will have a few extremely exciting points (when the goals are scored) the rest of the game to me seems pretty boring. It's usually just people stealing the ball away from each other around midfield. On the other hand, football has many scores (even though scores are multiples of 7, there are still a lot of them in games: 35-21, etc) and not only that, but many ways to make scores: touchdown, field goal, safety, extra point, 2-point conversion. For me, that keeps the game varied and interesting, sometimes coming down to "we need to use this combination of points to tie the game" which I think is pretty cool. Anyway, the fact that there are more scores in a game means that the game is more OFTEN exciting, at least to me. Basketball is on the other extreme where points are scored on nearly every possession, so getting points becomes pretty boring after a while. I think that american football is right in the middle.
Also, something that I've always found interesting: I find american football to be a very non-individual oriented game, rather it's a team game where individual players sacrifice themselves often. How does this reconcile with the individualistic nature of most Americans?

Sports.
1. A game played by two teams of 11 players each on a rectangular, 100-yard-long field with goal lines and goal posts at either end, the object being to gain possession of the ball and advance it in running or passing plays across the opponent's goal line or kick it through the air between the opponent's goal posts.
2. The inflated oval ball used in this game.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Both sports' definitions are secondary definitions at best. You define your game to be "cricket" even though the name doesn't match the game, we define our game to be "football" even though the name doesn't match the game. So if football is a misnomer, so is cricket. If cricket is a valid name for your game, so is football for our game. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Oh no. I have fallen into your trap. It is sorrowful.
Pretty much everyones point is: There was already a game called football being played before American Football took over. You can't just say "Damn, your sport is called soccer now, we want to call ours football. You must do as we say as we are Americans." Because that's pretty much what happened. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
First of all, read kwikloader's history.
Try reading the history I posted earlier - it explains the name. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
Yeah, I'll try. I have a hard time reading stuff. Maybe it's because I'm not american :O

Why would Jez insult all Americans? Because Europe has Napoleon Complex. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Oh, what. You're just doing it to annoy us then? Or just to be awkward? I'm glad we got THAT cleared up.

Yeah!

We gave him the dealio, or at least tried to. The general conclusion is that it's a matter of taste of opinion. This is NOT a "bash the U.S." thread, so stop flashing your wangs at each other. That goes for BOTH sides of the Atlantic.
God I'm sick of "The U.S. sucks. - Well, Europe has sucked for even longer. - Your MOM sucks."

With all of Europe’s problems the last thing you guys need to worry about is a game you never have to come in contact with.
Now why don't you start making an even bigger jet and get back to us when it's done.

I dunno why don't you tell us, our crime rates have been declineing since the 70's something Europe can't attest to.
