    In PSP w/ the JPEG's I just went to Page Setup , clicked fit to page, pick landscape click greyscale, and click negative, Prints a great Printer Cartridge Friendly Map, especially if your broke and have to save every penny for beer. Maps Rule. I just wish the writing matched the Commanders map which is flipped differently.

    sorry tenaku, didn`t notice your psd url before.. just opened these with FW and voila the black layer is gone <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Other Gimp tips: if printing just won't work right, delete the black layer, and merge all others into one (command: flatten image). And if the size is wrong (you only get a corner of the map, or whole thing is postage stamp sized): image - scale image - you can choose both pixel and printing resolutions there in several units.

    gah. you have a very good point there... i'll get that rotated.

    In other news, I'm planning on putting together a "tactical view construction kit and tutorial" so that when new NS maps come out, I don't have to make every one of these. It would contain detailed instructions, Icon packs, ( including planning icons like structures, ( turrets, resourcers, offense chambers, etc) equipment (guns, armor, health, ammo, etc) and command icons ( move here, attack, defend, build, repair, etc.) ) fonts, palettes, etc.

    So... what do you guys think? Good idea, or waste of time? If I make such a thing, will anybody use it?

    It sounds great to me I play Alien side mostly, I end up with Commander stress too Quickly, but I would imagine your Kit would be used by a great many people. And highly Appreciated.

    I like the idea of more maps.

    I've been listening to what you guys are saying so my next map will have different colors for the icons...

    is anybody else having a hard time with the blue on black location labels? I can lighten them up if that's the consensus.
  • MoratMorat Join Date: 2002-11-12 Member: 8338Members
    I found the blue on black OK on screen and maxed, but when I printed a map to half A4 size it was hard to read. Looked bloody great on good quality photo paper though <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Another Gimp tip for improving the contrast on the location names if you find the blue on a black background a bit tricksy to read:

    Select the locations layer in the layers dialogue, then right click the image and in the Select menu choose "By colour...". After the dialog pops up click on a blue bit of text on the image, and all that blue will be selected. You might want to zoom in (+ key) to get this right <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    If all the text is selected then choose the bucket fill tool from the main gimp window, and make sure that white (or whatever colour you want to use) is the colour in the top left colour window at the bottom of the main dialog, then click anywhere on the image. Hey presto, the text is all white on black.

    Tenaku man, I think a mapping pack like that would be a great idea. I know it's already been mentioned but it might be helpful if the hive/CC/resource/weldable icons were different colours or something. Excellent work, thanks man.

    I should print these out on good, thick paper, laminate them, and then use it for battles when I'm commanding and mark fronts, outposts, and whatnot with a dry-erase marker because the comm minimap is horrible.

    My preciousssss...

    These are great, keep working on them and post the .zip when they're done!

    *wonders how much Staples charges for color printouts and laminating...*

    Hey folks, since Tenaku is busy with other things, I made a map for ns_caged.

    <img src='http://www.druhkram.com/misc/ns/ns_caged.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

    I've also got the .psd file available in a .zip, which you can download <a href='http://www.druhkram.com/misc/ns/ns_caged.zip' target='_blank'>from my server.</a>

    Enjoy! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Great color maps, guys. I'm lucky enough to work in a print shop with access to the huge professional color printers, so yee haw, time for me to get a good assortment of high-res printouts! Those will be a tremendous help for learning the maps, those twisty indoor things are a pain to memorize compared to more open outdoor maps.

    Are there really only four maps? I thought there were more.
  • JRockJRock Join Date: 2002-11-26 Member: 10032Members
    Oh, there are seven. Any word on the other three maps? I really like how you do them.

    Since other people are posting alternative map styles, and Tenaku doesn't seem to mind the thread hijacking <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->, I'll post a link here to the overhead maps that I put together:

    <a href='http://www.tribes2maps.com/ns/' target='_blank'>http://www.tribes2maps.com/ns/</a>

    Mine are intended to be as printer-friendly as possible (no textures) but they certainly don't look as cool as Tenaku's. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Tenaku, do you still need hosting for your maps?
