Overhead Map Views

anybody interested?
I've created a really nice overhead view of ns_bast. It shows CC location, Hive locations, Weldables, Resource Nodes, and location labels. I've included a jpg version in this post, but if people are interested i can supply the original photoshop file with all labels nicely grouped so they can be turned on and off easily...

If i get sufficient good feedback for this little endeavor of mine, i'll consider making more.. let me know what you think!

    Good Job!

This is really good work and if you would decide to make one for every map, your effort would be highly appreciated by the community.

This is a real treat for everyone having trouble finding their way around the maps.

    Keep up the good work

There was a guy who did ALL maps earlier in a little downloadable zip, check the archives for it, I can't find it again but they were rather well done

Still though, this ones awesome to. And hey man, more versions would be splendid, his and yours, and whoever elses:)

EDIT: Acctually, I kinda like this one a bit better. More descriptive, etc. Please do more:D!

The only zip i saw had maps without labels... was there a pack that was already labeled?

No, I believe you have the monopoly on the "labeled" maps. It looks really nice. Keep up the good work!

This is really, really rad. I'd love to see the other maps done up like this. Much better than that overhead view file that other guy made, with the lime green backgrounds. Do eclipse next?

Mate, Good Effort. This helps heaps!!! great work. The labels are really good too! and very helpful. there is not a thing wrong with it! the layout is great too!
hmm.... there is only complaint...only one map....

I've actually done all the maps, but I don't have the nice icons that you do. Instead I just use coloured balls. If you're going to do them with the icons, I recommend a white background. It's easiler on a printer.

Nice work, i guess this is going to be used by alot of people for planning strategies and stuff like that. Can't wait for you to do the rest.

Ah, great job! I love the legend - that's what I was suggested Relic do to his pics - but yours seem clearer for some reason, maybe the .jpg compared to the .bmp

Anyway, keep em comin' if you've got the time.

well, i'm brightening the maps by about 35%, so details can be seen better. I'm also outlining them with a dark blue, as well as trying to define all internal walls the same way... it's not glaring, but it makes the maps alot easier to read.

as for the whole time thing, i'm gonna be pretty busy for the next couple of days, but what map would people like to see next? (aside from ns_nancy, that one's gonna take some tricky screenshots and compositing to get a good image, 'cause there are so many ducts running over the top of the map... probably gonna split it into two diagrams, just for sanity)

Just an idea, but ones on black backgounds would be better imo, more printer friendly

otherwise keep up the good work !

Ok, here are the psd files for the two maps i've got done so far (bast and eclipse). When viewed with the appropriate program (photoshop, paint shop pro, or the free image editing programThe Gimp ) you will be able to turn off individual layers so you can view only what you want to view. Plus, there is a white background behind the black one for those that want to print the maps....

feel free to edit these to your hearts content, but please give me credit for the original. Enjoy.

Hey Tenaku.... =) Maybe you could ask the admins for Natural-Selection.org or ReadyRoom.org if they could upload the map overviews on their site so that everyone could access them easily?

This would result in that everyone knew how the maps look and the teamplay would be much more efficent... besides it would be easier for new players to get a grip of the maps....

I think that you should continue your good work....

Those .psd files are great - on maps like ns_nancy, you can easily have different layers for the ducts and whatnot.

That's the plan, Flatline. especially for nancy.. the others have relatively simple ductwork, so i probably won't bother doing that with them.

and if anybody wants to put these on their site, please feel free. just drop me a message letting me know you've done it

I would just like to state how great these maps are to the community at large. As a commander, I find these maps vastly supportive to my efforts, allowing me to glance down at my desk and immediately have an idea where everything is without having to fumble with the onscreen display. Furthermore, it helps allow commanders, marines, AND aliens to stage their attacks and strategies before hand if they are members of a clan. Furthermore, by providing the original files, clans are able to mark their own waypoints on the maps and then distribute them to their members. It would be an absolute travesty if you did not follow up on this project with the rest of the NS maps. In fact, I would almost consider it reprehensible to show us such acts of greatness and then not follow through with it to the end. Thank you for your time.

Oops. I've made a small mistake. The whole 'white background' thing was added due to requests from forum-goers. When I was making the maps however, I wasn't thinking about using a white background, so i took a few shortcuts to make the work just a bit easier. Instead of carefully trimming the icons I ripped from the sprite files, I simply used the lighten mode for the layers containing the icons, which conviently got rid of all the black in them for me... unfortunately, because of this, you can't see any of the icons against a white background (as is demonstrated by the weldable icons on the ns_bast map).. I'll try to have a fix for this up by this afternoon.

    sorry for any inconvenience.

Daaaamn those are nice. I was doing a little project on relic's overheads too, but those don't compare to what your did. Here's the url anyway:

    ns_bast

I also need a better host. With images that big my monthly geocities limit is dead.

I was making a bunch of maps like this too,at the request of my clan. I think I'll just wait for these to be finished instead, since they're far superior.

I've updated both maps, including the psd zip that is linked earlier in this topic. the icons are bolder and more visible now, as well as being outlined for better visibility against a white background... they can also be viewed against no background at all, which is great for printing them on a transparency sheet to make a map overlay...
