    I suggest to allow more than one space in the name and add extra fields for clantag and maybe a prefix for some affiliation. I think that will fit at most the usual naming in the clan scene like: [myClan]Ghost. Otherwise we will see usernames like Ghost1, Ghost2 … Ghost[n] <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I assume it'll be "Ness Earthbound" or "NessEarthbound." Probably the first one.

If it's to make names easier to type etc., I doubt anyone will be confused if I use "name" instead of "NaMe". As far as I can tell, it'll only restrict the use of acronyms, such as clan tags. And of course if you want more than 4 words in your name, each with a capital letter, you can't have it. Perhaps it won't affect that many, but would it hurt all that much to discard that rule? <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
    The restriction on caps was meant to avoid 'shouting' and also names which I view as slightly obnoxious like 'hElLoMYNAMEisFlaYra'. You can still have short all caps names like 'BANG' though, because the restriction is on total number of capital letters.

    It's looking more and more like I'm going to need to allow people to change their handle once when we move. It would be a ton of work to review each choice, so I think I'll sacrifice some consistency and let everyone have one free change to whatever they want. Hopefully people won't change their identities to something completely different, but it's not the end of the world if they do.

    I'm the one causing problems by changing the handle naming policy AFTER you've registered, so it's the least I can do. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    So that's the plan. The naming conventions here are going to be the final conventions, but the first time you log in to the new system, you'll get the one-time option to change your handle to anything else that hasn't been taken.

    Umm, if I'm way out of line saying this, or if I've missed some thing completely, then some one just point it out and go about deleting this... But;

    Why?

    The main bit that seems slightly odd is the removal of numbers / symbols from peoples alias's. Outside the world of NS there are hundreds upon thousands of gamers - many people wanting to use similar/same names. People started taking to spelling their name in an unusual manner, or adding symbols to various places - it's the simple way of keeping yourself distinguishable from other players.

    examples (from just this thread);
    Rapier --> Rapier7
    coma --> [c]oma
    TheMunch --> TheMunch8
    Drummerman --> Drummerman109
    Kamikaze --> Kamikaze!!! (ignoring capitals)
    SpaceMoogle --> SpaceMoogle5
    SkyHigh --> 5kyh16h91

    Obviously I can't speak for any of them, but first impression would leave me to believe that most of them use unusual spelling/additional number as a way of making it unique.

    Unfortunately I use a commonly used alias.. i've gone onto random CS Servers (bearing in mind I havn't played CS regularly for a couple of years) and have had people think I'm some one else using this name... lucky for me I'm one of the only 'shanks' in the NS world and I'm not playing any other games at the moment...

    whats my point? This just seems like a lot of hastle and possibly a fair bit of annoyance for some people to achieve very little. As I said at the beginning if I've missed some thing significant then ignore this little rant... and equally if all the people effected (affected? which spelling?) aren't bothered.

    Hooray for Community Integration!
    It seems that there will be a lot of people requesting customized changes to their names, and that could be a lot of work. Simple Solution: People affected contact their local Mod (Not the always-overworked Flayra) and change their handles to a more suitable format! This way we get human input regarding acceptable changes, and leave Flayra to bring us the good stuff!

    If this does lead to a stats system that is integrated into the sites and all the players, it can lead to two things, one which is similar to what we have now. People who rack up their "skill points" start having their e-pride flare up and swell, resulting in some possibly becoming arrogant and obnoxious. Those who aren't where they want to be and can't seem to reach the peak they want might start feeling resentment and envy, resulting in 'stat ****' hating, similar to what happened to the vets scene and some of the community right now. Arrogance and ego-strutting on one end vs resentment, envy, and hate on the other.

    Though if the entire community actually sees the good in this system, they might all feel to use it to its full benefit, a more integrated community that has wide open communication on all ends, lower rung players searching out the higher rung and respectable players, forming small turtorial groups or whatnot, helping the community grow and expand as a whole. Though it requries maturity and people-skills on both ends.

    Hopefully the latter is the outcome that comes out of this hard-worked on project.

    That's ridiculous! I'am a chess player, and along with being a chess player I have a elo rating. People who play Chess alot and are very active have higher elo ratings. If this name change jazz has anything to do with the BUS I don't think it's fair to say that people are gonna be stat **** or develop a inferiority complex just because someone ranks higher on a statistic system...I mean, It's not like *statistics are something new right? You got to school you get a *grade. you play chess you get a *elo etc. If people are gonna trip just cause someone has a higher rating then them then that's their own gravy. I'm personally all for this change...for 1)I like things to look formal
    2)It could in some way be relevant to the BUS
    3)names won't be misleading
    Also, I think it would be a good idea to implement the "clan tag" into the new website just to get it done and out the way. However, It could be alot of work and maybe I'm overlooking the fact that there are other issues with higher priority.

    I totally concur, Photek. On a mature level, a mature community should have no problems with a game wide integrated stat system if BUS is indeed that. However, from my gaming experience, there are always those who want to stat ****, thus ruining it for many others. And there are also those who complain about 'stat ****' as well. Though it's a sad concept, I only speak of it because of what I've seen when playing NS on pubs.

    Edit: Oh snap, I double posted, my bad. And just to add, I'm all for the new integrated system.
