I mean, what if someone's name is 3569? (pronouced out thirty-five sixty-nine) I could easily see that happening. Yet, all this stuff doesn't prevent someone of having a name such as kdHsdOPz. :|
would it be a big problem to leave my name as it is now? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
The new updated list looks like it includes a lot more of the names that would actually be included. However the question still remains, what will happen when the name we're converting to (take mine for instance, vigilante21 ==> vigilante) is already TAKEN <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->?
I will post my original question from a couple pages back again :
"According to one of Flay's post in this thread previously, whoever has the earlier join date, will have precedence over the forum name. I guess my question is will that be the one and only determining factor ? What if the person's name I want <b>[or supposedly will be switched to]</b> hasn't posted since 2003 ? And will there be anything else that grants a person precedence over another's, such as post count #, last date of activity, vet icon, consti. icon, etc ?"

I just wanted to say that I really like this idea. An old community with a new start. I also like the fact that it's now a lot easier to remember or even read some of the names. I'm looking forward to the change and of course to the multi-million dollar project UWE is working on !
Well, I have a pretty big dilemma (in my mind). My forum name here is inconsistent with my handle, but I keep it b/c it's the oldest login on this board I can remember the password to <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> (I had one migrated from UBB, but I lost the password), and "tim" will be very generic...
My gaming name is rad4Christ. I've had this FOREVER. And the idea of radChrist or radforChrist is very unappealing for me. I'd say really consider adding numbers, but not allowing substituting numbers for letters, i.e. l33t sp34k...
Why not allow l33tsp34k? Really, your handle of all things is your free-est mode of expression - it has no message to convey that needs to absolutely be understandable. If it makes you moderators happy, impose either a limit on special characters or a "reasonable use" clause that allows you to stick it to anyone that crosses your way. Anything is better than removing every single number or special character from names, some of them which roll off the tongue perfectly fine - like x5, rad4christ, BOZO^, Tyrmobile^, Rapier7 and who knows what else.
I do however agree that avoiding clantags in names is a good idea, and just adding a forum feature later on that has a little tab below your name in the info field stating your current clan - like this :
The link being intentional, as that would quickly familiarize forum readers with competitive clans and help a better understanding of whose who. Plus its easy as all hell to do.
I think allowing a minimum amount of numbers (maybe 3?...still no special chars though) would be best. However, I don't believe that a strict formula needs to be applied to naming in the first place. Instead, have a policy that more or less defines what you deem as a moderately readable name. Then instead of developing a criteria algorithm all you need to do is develop a moderator function that can alert a user the next time they login or try to post or something that their name has been deemed unacceptable and guide them to a page that allows them to change their name.
If you wanted to make it a little more sophisticated you could even allow a user to submit an appeal as to why they think their name doesn't need to be changed to be reviewed by all (or some of) the moderators. Its probably a bit to sophisticated, but its an idea.
In the long run if you use the idea of moderators delegating name changes you can impose other naming requirements other than syntax such as content acceptability (ie. does it contain racial, sexual, ethnic slurs etc...) in your policy. It would also allow some of the community that have fairly understandable names with numbers (like x5) to keep their names and only the more blatant monstrocities would be dealt with... for example a name like |V|347 5|-||31|) (Meat Shield).

Quite frankly, without numbers and special characters you are going to run out of names that people want. The internet is HUGE.
I think you'd be better off allowing whatever, and have mods deal with people individually if a name is too annoying. Most people don't want to have an annoying name, and you are never going to come up with rules specific enough to only disallow the annoying ones. Just have some faith in us.

If you're talking about in-game names, people change those all the time, it's not like they're locking your game name to your forum name.
I think the naming policy should not be nearly so strict on numbers, although it should discourage 1337-speak names. There are certain names that will cease to make any sense without numerical characters or special characters - limiting handles to alphabetical characters really limits a lot of people and undermines the purpose of these changes (consistency), since people will now be stuck with names that are vastly different from their ingame handle.
Also, once the user base is big enough, people are going to have to resort to strings of nonsense in order to stay within the naming guidelines. I don't mean number-substitution 1337-speek nonsense, but names like "zqfmgb" and "splargleflatzenhhh." I think the guidelines should be loosened a bit, but I also think that requested names should be reviewed by a human and either accepted or rejected based on the naming policy. Someone named "Johnny5" (as in the robot) has a better claim to their numerals than someone named "6s6t6e6v6e6," and I think the new policy should reflect that, so people's handles don't cease to make sense.

The link being intentional, as that would quickly familiarize forum readers with competitive clans and help a better understanding of whose who. Plus its easy as all hell to do.
I think you'd be better off allowing whatever, and have mods deal with people individually if a name is too annoying. Most people don't want to have an annoying name, and you are never going to come up with rules specific enough to only disallow the annoying ones. Just have some faith in us.

We currently have 18545 members. I'm quite certain that we won't run into the problem of "No new names" anytime soon. Unless you plan on every online person in the world suddenly making an account, which I don't. Maybe someone won't get the name he wants, but if he REALLY wants it he can change a caps or two. Or spelling. Or get over it and get another name.
But you see, that is just the thing. Their name will then be <i>different</i> from the name they use everywhere else, thus nullifying part of the point of this project.

Define "everywhere else". Their name will be different from what they use in other forums, which really have no bearing on the NS forums. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Your name right now will stay the same, and every newcomer will have to find a name that isn't taken. If the one they use somewhere else, some forum that really doesn't have any bearing on NS or anything to do with the stat tracker/ SteamID/ etc, has been taken by someone else, then tough cookies. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
If you're talking about in-game names, people change those all the time, it's not like they're locking your game name to your forum name.

Yes, I am talking about in-game names, aswell as IRC names. I don't know where you get the idea that people change their names all the time, yes, people may change them now and then for situational jokes or whathaveyou, but their actual name rarely gets changed and they always go back to it.

That's fascinating. Too bad. If the name you want is full of numbers, then you're not getting it. If the name you use in-game belongs to someone else already, then *gasp* your forum name and your in-game name won't match exactly. The horror! <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo--> Notice the very last line of my sig. Problem solved.
What will happen to the other Daedalu?

Since he was here before you, HE will keep "Daedalus" and you will have to change. Try "daedalus"; that should work.

I don't really care to much (as you can see it wont affect me), I'm just trying to speak up for those who it will majorly affect, as well as pointing out the problems in the plan. The whole reason I brought it was is because of this statement flay made:
<!--QuoteBegin-Flayra+Nov 17 2004, 05:21 PM--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Flayra @ Nov 17 2004, 05:21 PM)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->
The idea here is to promote community quality by encouraging everyone to identify as their 'handle' whenever possible. That means on the forums, in IRC, and most importantly, in-game.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
edit: in response to this
<!--QuoteBegin-5kyh16h91+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (5kyh16h91)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->

The problem is, there is already a Daedalus, so that?s why I called me -Daedalus-

Names are not case sensitive. Daedalus = daedalus = dEaDAluS

I can log in as "AlKaholic", though on the list it reads my alias is to be changed to "Al Kaholic" (thus, the underscore changed to a space). So yeah, it's been a while since it was last updated, at least for me.
I'm not even sure why I used an underscore in my name.

I can't log in., I think my nickname will be SRR but im not sure.
i just make it easyer on my self and change to my CS name, i fear however that it may cause a few people to distrust me.
It is
Eternaly Lost AKA S2R2
I was given it because i can't tell bomb site A from Bomb site B.
So now my Fourm name is Eternaly_Lost. Now how do i get it onto the new fourms?
