What I am saying is not that "OMG UR WRONG", I'm just asking for an explanation how it is anything like diablo. I don't get that feeling at all.

(oh and I did google, most results were saying that "the developers of guild wars blah blah developed Diablo etc", and the results that weren't like that, unfortunately didn't specify how it is like Diablo...)

Note in the forum linkies I gave you get some naysayers though there's more who seem to agree with it being 'diablo-esque' from my counts (Biased as they are ^~ ).
To be honest, though, I'm curious why you can't see it being pretty much the next diablo =/

Is it because diablo has some negative stigma attached to it's name? Is it because they changed a few things yet still left much of the core the same? (look at the UI... seriously XD ).

I never played Diablo or Diablo 2. I couldn't care less about any resemblence. I thoroughly enjoyed the E3 preview event (Once you got a few good people playing), and I am looking forward to release, and to finding out what cool stuff we get to play with during the World Preview.

Meh, whatever, opinions based on feelings don't share easily. I'm sure that however much fun it is(going to be) will have a larger impact than how diablo-like it is.

EDIT: oh, and yes, when you put it like that, it's most definitely because of "Diablos negative stigma", heh.
EDIT2: One of the first sites you get if you search for ["diablo" + "guild wars"] mentions that it is a CORPG, Competitive Online RPG. I've never heard that term before, but it does sound more fitting than MMORPG.
• GeminosityGeminosity :3 Join Date: 2003-09-08 Member: 20667Members
heh, yeah... PSO and stuff were more CORPGs than MMO so it's a nice new one to use =3

I'm not trying to put GW down... I might not have got into it but I know there's lots who will enjoy it. When I compare it to diablo I'm purely looking at mechanics, I'm not meaning to attach the 'oh noes diablo!' to it along with them XD
While it has a lot of the things I think are 'core' to Diablo's system it improves a lot on many of the aspects which is why I often say it's as good as a nigh on being a sequel =D

I think everyone is downloading the pre-first-area content at once, meaning there is a huge load on the servers that wont ease up until everyone is done and at least half the people are standing in one place for a minute or so, so that the servers can catch up.

but seriously, without a grind, what is there to do in an MMO? the grind is what makes it NOT a glorified chatroom. if everyone is auto-l33t without having to grind, there's nothing left to do but sit around and chat...

After playing the intro level, I have decided not to buy this game.

Does anyone know if the way of controlling the character in WoW is anything similar to this? If that is the case, I'm not going to buy that either. Despite how awsome it is in all other ways.

Nothing wrong with wasd.. but that's not really what I meant. It's just that with this kind of character control, I'm just not able to live myself into the character.. it's.. yuck!
This is also the reason I hate KotOR, which is similar. That, and the very long and boring conversations.

I've had some fun

I was about to engage on the third mission (not including intro level)

Getting a party can take a while, so after running around and trying to make myself look like enough of a fool to gain attention, I threw together a team. I don't have much experience there so I just grabbed what I could.

We get in and I'm insulted beyond all measure for not having a primary monk (one guy had 2 monks in his team and they were utterly destroyed and this would be his 6th attempt at the mission)

So we try it out anyway and level the first monster without much difficulty, then about 6 scarabs level us...

okay drop that group, lets try this again.

3 monks 2 rangers and a warrior ought to do it.

Goes well, I get the group to follow, occasionally giving a helpful hint.
Then it happens, monsters flow in from all sides, all 3 monks and the warrior are dead. I and another ranger run for our lives but the monsters stop chasing us right at the choke point. So we draw one out, can't manage it (it's getting healed, a lot) and place it where it shouldn't be much trouble. We draw out a couple of scarabs and I play running target while the other ranger runs in and revives a monk (she had the signet to rez with, I'd already used mine).

She gets in and revives him!

Unfortunately, after a bit of partial success, he's killed. There goes our last shot.

So we commit seppuku and return to the outpost. One of the characters left and I picked up a warrior to replace her.

we enter the mission.

This time I use my experience to the fullest. I direct the fire of my men, order their movements and pretty much act like an experienced field commander.
It was great.

So we complete the very long mission and I tell them I must go. Soon after I receive a whisper, "We'd really rather play with you again."

Now that, is a good feeling.

edit: the whisper came from a member of the previous team

It's kinda weird really... if you remember way back before the E3 event I was all 'omg this sounds amazing' but once I tried it kinda came away non-plussed.
Not to put anything down without a second chance I downloaded it to have a look-see again and though I've not played I gotta say... the character models are amazing o.O
All games should have models for their players of this calibre or higher... it's just a shame I suspect I still won't be a fan of the gameplay but we'll see...

later on edit: bleh... still don't like the UI, combat is pretty much the same and while pretty and large I still feel all that awed by it for some reason; it feels strangely hollow =o
Guess it's just not my cup of tea ^^;

The Preorder/gamespot weekend reintroduced the E3 content, along with loads more explorable area. Heres a map of some of the area we wandered around on Sunday. For reference, Lions Arch is the very bottom left.

We met snow ettins, minotaurs, charr by the million, dwarves riding mammoths, and many other cool folk.
