awe yeah, a free world preview event - come one, come all. Looks like the best thing to happen to the world of gaming since NS 1.04
I'm even taking Friday off work (party for the game, partly because I need a break).
If you haven't heard of guild wars, start researching it now. It is a Diablo II / everquest / (insert pvp game of choice) game all rolled into one, and better than any of them.
Hope to see you all there!!!

You forgot to think about Guild Wars.
I'll be playing GW, of course. Good stuff.
And what am I going to do for Halloween?
I'm going to hang a sign around my neck that says "Instanbul" on it.

Man I went to that site and was all like "OMG!!1oneeleven this r 1337" because "Index of /" is just such a sweet mod. I mean who could ask for more than the suspense of 'Parent Directory", the action of "Last Modified 13-Oct-2004 20:11" and the sheer drama of "Size". Wow. Is the next release going to include the little line that says "Apache/1.3.31 Server at www.zombiepanic.net Port 80"? Or is that planned for an expansion
As for Halloween, I plan to scare off the little kids with the power of technology (and the power of a 16 foot wide garbage-bag spider), more precisely the power of having my laptop sitting by the door (with speakers outside) and play a "scary" noise every time somebody comes... Or I could just play Doom3 and have those sounds go outside... hrm...
So I got interested and might check it out. If I like it I might buy it since it's not going to bring about a repeating cost.
Sorry but I wasn't a huge fan of diablo and this is basically Diablo 3 but with auto-attack tacked on. I'm sure if you loved the adventures of the wanderer then GW is spanktastic for you but I was left pretty non-plussed.
The greatest thing to happen to MMOs would be a decent combat system with real-time collisions... without grind... with decent char creation... interesting worlds, quests and items... lots of fun minigames and interesting non-combat activities... and stuff ^^
GW so isn't it but if it's what you enjoy then I hope you have fun with it =3
I've always gone for crafting yet I've never seen a good crafting system. I've heard there are a couple with a great crafting system, could someone suggest some?

How is it like diablo
Besides, it's new, and fresh, being different is GOOD when it comes to mmorpgs. Instanced PvM areas is teh bestx0rz
much better than hanging around in some area and hoping you can kill a monster without someone else taking the experience or loot...
And hell, you're pretty much FORCED to use teamwork in the "story areas", what with the partying and hordes of monsters(though I understand the "solo areas" aren't instanced anymore, which seems gives a whiff of the traditional way of doing stuff in mmorpgs). Teamwork makes a game SO much more fun.
Especially since, during the e3, I could just go someplace, meet random dudes, and it'd be all friendly, like we had known eachother for months. That doesn't even happen in real life, nevermind other games.
I came from lineage2 which is probably the worst level grinding/money saving mmorpg ever, this might be a nice twist and since I havent played diablo2. Im in for a new expecrience.
From what ive read (sites and forums) it is a 'mmorpg' which will adress the constant boring level grinding and other annoying things other mmorpg's have. And you will be able to get stonger by skill and not your 'online time', which is also something i like since I dont have all the time in the world to get to an interesting point only to discover that I have to levelgrind once more...
Also Ive read somewhere that somes spells can alter the world like burning down a forest or building bridges, looking forward to see what I can do with a little mayhem
I cant compare it to WOW since I havent played it yet Btw isnt this game created by some people which left Blizzard to work on their own game resulting in Guildwars?
Their faq's:
http://www.guildwars.com/faq/default.html
http://vnboards.ign.com/Guild_Wars_General...40/68397560/?96
Levelling and grinding don't make an MMO, don't ever make the silly assumption I ever think that!!! Seriously it downright offends me.
As to why it's like diablo??? Holy heck align you've got to be kidding me o.O
The combat system is a clone of diablos down to almost frightening degrees; the only things added being the 'skill timer' and some actual 'colllision detection'. Even the interface is diablo-ish and it's no coincidence considering half the team who made GW also happened to be Blizzard Employees who worked on a certain devilly game XD
I wouldn't say the game needs 'skill' in the sense I like it. Like most it's still very 'tactical' in combat rather than needing some serious hand-eye coordination or, more importantly, timing. Not that tactics/strategy aren't good I just like a little more to it than a plan of attack.
For those who don't know the full story character development and playing in GW is pretty simple. First off you start at level 1 ala any other 'level-based RPG' and some skills based on your primary and secondary classes (you choose 2 classes for your char =o). From here it's your usual grind until you hit 50 which isn't too hard... after all the grind isn't the point of the game as neither is the Coop really. It's a PvP game =3
Anyways once you max level your char can't increase in anything but the game has a free-skill system which basically means you collect skills. You're allowed a certain number of skills to assign yourself outside of battle (once you enter a mission/arena you're stuck with them till it ends). What that means really is that if you've played longer you probably have a more diverse 'deck' to pick your skills from much like say magic the gathering where someone who's bought a ton of cards has more fine-tuning options they can do to their deck before a game. Course, also like Magic even a loaded person can be given a beatdown by a plucky new player using better tactics or taking advantages of mistakes =3
Essentially the game is split into 'towns', 'missions' and 'arenas'.
A town is a big empty place with a few NPC shops standing about. They're usually very pretty and don't serve much purpose beyond having the shops and being particularly large and hence good meeting places to... well... trade/shop =P
A mission comes in two parts; the 'lobby' which is basically like a town minus the shops and this is where you choose who to team up with and chat with before... note that arenas also have these.
After you're ready you warp to the mission which is basically a linear but kinda fun (the first few times) dungeon crawl with occassional events and objectives slung in like outrunning an invading army or blatting a crowd with a giant catapult.
Arenas are much the same concering the lobby but then based on the arena type you basically end up on the battlefield where you kick something's rear... usually an apposing team of players =3
The game plays a lot like a newer, improved version of diablo with a skill system inspired by collectable card games. If you've played D2 then you can sure as heck play this
yeh I agree with you on that, crafting is still a lost soul in the world of mmorpg
It seems that this game is going for the competitive playing style. In lineage2 its also crazy if you look at the amount of almost impossible to find loot you need for the creation of certain items/weapons or armor.
Maybe it will be added later on in the game, at the moment only the human race can be played as different classes and because its official release date of the final game has been set at mid 2005 it could be added. I for one am keeping my eye on this one
On a similar note, I won't be able to play GW this weekend, probably, because my computer access is being restricted. Damn!
Not even the mp system is particularly similar, since in diablo every class except sorcerer takes fairly long to recharge the mp storage. Unless you use potions(which, coincidentally, are not in GW).
And the skills... saying that theyre similar to diablo, well, you might as well say that morrowind magics are the same as diablo. In fact there are more similarities there, yet there is a large difference. Like in diablo, there is a level limit for your tricks, and a "skill tree". And you can use any skill you have spent a point on any time, 'slong as you have the mp of course.
Then again, I never played a melee class, maybe thats the problem?
I never actually noticed the lack of potions until you mentioned it which is kinda weird but then again that obviously shows how important a change it is, (not much at all,) at least in my eyes anyways ^^
As I previously pointed out though, a big part of the team are ex-blizzard; including the main designer! I'm pretty sure there was even an interview with him where he mentions diablo a couple of times.
To bring it down to basics just go try googling Diablo and "guild wars" together. The amount of hits is pretty high and there's a lot of comparitive reviews. As far as most seem concerned this is pretty much D3... if so many seem to have come to that conclusion on their own I suspect that it's highly likely true that this is both heavily influenced by the D family if not practically the third installment just set in a different world with a different story; don't you? ^~
