Ground Zero Suicide Driven by Election

Associated Press

NEW YORK - A 25-year-old man from Georgia who was apparently distraught over President Bush's re-election shot and killed himself at ground zero. Andrew Veal's body was found Saturday morning inside the off-limits site, said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. A shotgun was found nearby, but no suicide note was found, Coleman said.

Veal's mother said her son was upset about the result of the presidential election and had driven to New York, Gus Danese, president of the Port Authority Police Benevolent Association, told The New York Times in Sunday's editions.

Friends said Veal worked in a computer lab at the University of Georgia and was planning to marry.

"I'm absolutely sure it's a protest," Mary Anne Mauney, Veal's supervisor at the lab, told The Daily News. "I don't know what made him commit suicide, but where he did it was symbolic."

Police were investigating how Veal entered the former World Trade Center site, which is protected by high fences and owned by the Port Authority.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Amerika needs more people like this. This country was built on the bones of those willing to give their lives for their ideals; not those who say that they have "too much to lose" and end up dealing with it. I salute this man - he was willing to give the ultimate sacrifice in order to institute change, or to show his undying support for that change.

Just as I respect Thich Quang Duc immensely, I respect this man. Andrew Veal? I'll remember the name.

Killing yourself at all is an extreme way to bring attention to something.

Killing yourself in an unusual, painful, and very meditated, documented, and public way is an extreme way to bring attention to an extreme topic.

Shooting yourself in ground zero with nobody around is a very usual, slightly symbolic, yet undocumented way to bring attention to yourself for killing yourself over a very un-extreme topic.

    I see little relation.

And Chrono you missunderstand. Since you cannot give life, do not be so eager to deal out death. That simple.

okay he killed himself for no reason. Is that what you want to hear?

I cannot see how you can say that this is an un-extreme topic at all. Did you know that Bush is already instituting a flat tax? This means that every bracket will pay 17% or so from now on.

What does this mean to the average person? It means that a lower class taxpayer will pay 3% less income tax per year. It means that someone in the upper brackets will pay 23%-30% less than they currently do.

Now tell me - what's a bigger number: three percent of $30,000 of 23% of millions.

Where's the justice, man. Where is it?

Hey funbags, how about you stop reading the topics if you don't like them? He's posting news. It's election time for your country, so of course there's going to be news in relation with the election. People have always posted interesting, weird, infuriating, scary, etc... news articles here. If you don't like it, too bad. Don't reply to the topic. Don't participate in a flame war. Don't even read it.

Only certain people are "allowed" to shoot themselves at the WTC site?

Literally, *no one* is allowed to, because no one is allowed to be there in the first place. But to say he somehow doesn't deserve to shoot himself there, just because he's from Georgia? Terrorism is a nation-wide (hell, world-wide) issue, and GWB is *every* American's president.

No, what I wanna hear is that he killed himself in a rash and emotional way. The guy was probably just some random emo jerk.

my guess would be that he didn't complain about anything (as he probably has no head).

PErhaps he was trying to prove a point that his own personal paradigm was marked for death on 9/11. Conversely, perhaps someone very close to him died at the WTC and he wanted to end his life "as close to them as possible."

There are so many different possibilities; saying that it means nothing just because you don't know what that motive actually was is, to be honest, a little mean.

People just don't toss themselves at landmarks and commit suicide. There's always a reason.

The ultimate sacrifice in order to institute change? Selling the shotgun, donating the money, and then volunteering for some sort of organization like America Coming Together or Move On would have been a much more productive way for him to express his views. This is just a waste of a life.

He ran away. He ran away from whatever he saw in Bush that scared him. This guy was no martyr. He was misguided, and chose to kill himself instead of making a stand against what he didn't believe in. It's as simple as that.

Well, suicide is one of the weakest and most selfish things you can possibly do to yourself and to others(generally, there are obvious exceptions).

I am actually all for suicide though, as it is a form of Natural-Selection (albeit slightly different to the original idea) that weeds out the weaker people in life. I wont shed a tear for him, one less person from the shallow end of the gene pool that will ever have offspring.

Just a question, since I skimmed the article:

If there was no suicide note, how did they know that he killed himself over the reelection of GWB?

Weakest? It's not like he cares, because he is death. He is no longer, and if he ever were, then it was just an illusion..
