My opinion? On what? This thread is worthless. Grendel and Zero make the calls this isn't a democracy. They told you whats up now shush. This is his way of letting you know something is being done. Not a debate about what should be done.

I've already recommended 3 people who would be a plus.

    No, it's completely intentional.

You can see this by looking into the SDK, valve actually capped the rate at 1.7 and left bhop in as a feature for mod makers.

In fact, I believe HL2 has bhop as well, just by playing CS:S I can feel the same type of air acceleration physics that I do in CS, so I'm guessing it probably is...

Hence why I mentioned John Romero. I always got the impression the initial entry was a mistake. Whether Valve then 'officially' accepted it is another matter.

On the other hand, this is Waaay off-topic, and who really cares?

    1.Knowledge of the game.

    2. Dedication to the pt program

    3. Ability to communicate concisely and in a positive manner.

Thats about it. The thing is not many pubbers have a good knowledge of the game. I mean pubbers who've played since 1.0 could probably learn loads of new stuff in a month of high level clan play.

Oh definately, i've only been clanning since like b4 and i started playing ns in v1. Learnt more and improved at NS more in this short period of time than i did in the whole 1.0 - 3.0 period. Not just from playing like 120+ PCWs but also from the players i've started to talk to and become friends with, i've been talking and learning from top clanners and taking in all their words of wisdom onboard.

More people just need to take the transition. They'll find the clan scene very welcoming and helpful - i know i did.

Arg, can't we have one thread that doesn't have someone resurrecting some long dead or unsolvable thread?

So far I've seen scripting, gamma alteration, clan v pub, and "the dev team don't listen"........ I mean wth do you people want? The moon on a stick?

See to be honest I don't really care if the person PTing is using his scripts, binds, lucky rabbit foot or crack cocaine. He's doing his job, yeeha, all power to him. If he feels the urge to have or not have gibberish before and after his name, then woohoo yay.

At the end of the day NS is intended to be a commercial product. Someday it or its progeny will be on your shop shelf. It will be balanced for the average player in the average demographic. Not JUST for tards, not JUST for people with no life, or people who have a gift for pushing buttons, or people who think the world centres on themself.

Its about MONEY. Cold hard cash. PROFIT. And there's nothing wrong with that as long as a good product is turned out. I can't recall any hugely popular online MP game being one where luck decided the winner. Neither can I recall any hugely popular online MP game being one where you have to be in the top X percent of the playerbase in order to really enjoy it.

Games revolve around the middleground. The happy balance between easy to learn, hard to master. The really great games of this and any other time have been easy to pick up, hard to really master, but ultimately fun to play against people of any skill level.

The development/PT boys turn round and say "ok folks, here's what we look for in our team" and to be honest I'd say their criteria matches with the bulk of most PT groups. Rooms of people bouncing around Tomb Raider II in order to find strange jumps which crash the game. Aiming at every possible part of the hitbox in order to make sure the detection is working. The ability to report this in a concise and understandable manner, and also be able to communicate without going for a raging flame.

Most of the complaints come about because NS is a biiiiiig public beta. We mostly know what goes on, what WAS in, etc. Most games we buy are on the shop shelf, in little wrappers. You buy it, you don't. You don't like it, you refund it. You like it except for a few details, you mod it or you join the forums and offer patch suggestions.

If you took such a forum and then filled it with people who did not form the core of the game's audience then it would be bedlam on a similar scale to the NS forums. If it was open beta and wip then it'd be utter chaos as every goon with an account posts up his opinion on the game concept. You would have people with no idea of the game posting about how it should be more like this, that, or the other. The poor sods who actually like the game for what it is become drowned in a sea of total inanity.

In an ideal world the first we would ever hear of NS would be a preview on some site or in a gaming mag. People who like the game would buy it, play it, sign up and offer little constructive comments about the CURRENT game version. People who didn't like the current version would NOT be wasting other people's time.

Sadly its not an ideal world so the bulk of us have to make do with the continued resurrection of dead topics, old grudges, and unfounded uninformed comments from people who believe they know what its really all about.

Seriously folks if you can't appreciate the work that the devs and pts put into this game, then take a long holiday.

If you think you can do better, make your own company, make your own mod. All power to you, I wish you luck in your endeavour.

Otherwise sit down and shut up. I don't mean to be blunt but its getting seriously repetitive and as a player who loves the game I think its hurting the community that we can't all jump on the one bus and ride to RC1.

So far, I'm fully agreeing with Mr. Ben. Despite the reputation it has(because of earlier versions), the clan scene tends to be very welcoming, especially now that its hanging on by a thread. I'm happy to see people really going for it- I know I am.

I don't see why skill is so important for testers. If all the testers are pr0 l3370rz, that's probably why we have fades that only work properly in the hands of vets. This is a game that gets sent out to the community, and you said yourself that you want to represent the demographic of the community... but what about people who don't have super aiming skills and reaction times?

It is a sad state of affairs when only people who play competitively can realise that you use blink to move quickly and that when your life goes down you run away.

Seriously, how long does it take to figure out that you shouldn't be holding down +attack when you blink? 10 seconds or so? And it stands to reason to run away when you're going to die, all you have to do is judge how long it will take you to kill a marine, how long it will take him to kill you and remember it. After you have those mind blowingly difficult tactics memorised then all it takes is practice. And hud_fastswitch 1.

Edit: Another thing many people don't seem to realise is that vets or other supposedly skilled players don't just have superior aims and reflexes. They can analyse a match in a split second, position themselves correctly for any situation, make good decisions and work well in a team.
  • NadagastNadagast Join Date: 2002-11-04 Member: 6884Members
its really not hard to use the fade.

Besides, players with more skill will always be better than people "who don't have super aiming skills and reaction times". In a RTS or FPS...

Some people seriously need to stay on topic, from reading all those 10 pages.

I am acctually glad Grendel posted this, because i have often wondered (and quite honestly) wanted to be a playtester.

I agree with a lot of the things Forlorn said. He obviously cares for the game therefore doesnt want people coming into the project and messing the game up, which is where the skilled and competitve players would come into the program., therefore is defensive of his views. I think skill should be slightly more important than #4, due to the reason that, surely to get skilled you must play the game alot, therefore you know it pretty much inside out, and you get to know about bugs pretty fast. (Compare clans which have 1 pcw a week, to clans which have 3+ a day),

The best thing in my eyes; would be have the Vet's who still exist to deal with balance, and PT's to sort the bugs, that way surely things will get done twice as fast, and the game would get nicely ironed out, so there are less releases for every version.

However short of doing this, I strongly suggest that blanace is sorted quite rapidly, because it is the clanners keeping this game going, and if these give up, things like CAL ect wont exist and the game will just sink quite rapidly.
An instance of this happened in the EU quite recently, when Clanbase wasnt running, clans were dying as fast as they were made, sheerly because people were annoyed at how the game was (balance wise).

Okay, i know bugs do need to be ironed out rapidly, with the software being public, and thus trying to get them out before a release is in the greatest instinct, however when you bring a patch out, people will still find bugs as systems are different, configs are different, players reactions are different, servers are different, ect ect.

Just thought id have a little input.

I dunno, I've been playing just before 1.04 came out and I still can't Fade well. They keep changing it, making it to some uber death machine or a wimpy giant skulk.

I'll just stick to my uber stuka-lerk dive bombing from hell and horny (oh my) ono that goes cloak and eat rines!

What I want to know, How many PT's are there currently? Maybe a list?

Aroubnd 80. If you really want to know specifics, click on "members", then sort by group and select "playtester". That should give you a list. I am assuming all playtesters have an ns.org account, which they should have

Trouble with what you said there Alkiller, some might be inactive PT'ers which havent been removed, a list would be the best thing.
