Half-life 2 Or Source
<div class="IPBDescription">Engine...</div> Okay, this has been bugging the crap out of me lately. Simple question, just post a simple answer (maybe with a bit of reasoning).
<b>Do you call the CS:Source engine the HL2 engine or the Source engine?</b>
I hate it when people make it sound like it's the Source engine. CS:S IS A MOD FOR THE HL2 ENGINE.
My vote is the HL2 engine.
Flame away!

Sorry to burst your bubble.
Why is the main executable for CS:S called <b>HL2.exe</b>?
Edit: Yeah, Ice, that's not exactly right. Heh. Take for example, your computer. Looking at mine, i can say it's an AMD ATHLON XP 2400+, 512mb ram, radeon 9800 pro, etc etc. That isn't the same as saying "Oh, my computer is windows XP" or "But my linux is the same as my computer hardware".
Okay, well that was a crappy example. Basically, the engine of a game, and the game [models, plot, maps, etc] are different. It's like a pizza.. A pizzaputer. Computer.
Edit:

What does that have to do with the engine? The hl2.exe is just to start up Half Life 2.

because its easier to type hl2.exe then source.exe?

Because, like you said, CS:S is a MOD for hl2. So it has to run hl2.exe to get the engine started. In the beta, it was css.exe (I think), but a DOS window came up and started the Source engine.
and ice you should know we dont think we are robots
Am I thread cancer?
Also, the Nature Boys would walk all over your idiot chiefs.
ditto with Serious Sam (Serious) and most games.
(it's late I don't make sense)
maybe yours doesnt!
maybe it does can you prove it doesnt?
source --> HL2 --> CS:S
just like most mods, it uses the exe of the game that it modified.
you have done nothing, report to the nearest memory wipe station
My 2 pance.
Half life 2 = a game Source = the engine said game runs on.
CS and HL2SP are "skins" for HL2.exe. HL2.exe uses the Source engine, which Valve saw fit to name.
HL's engine never really had a name, except maybe "Quake 1 + bits of Quake 2 and other fun code," so discussing the original CS you said it ran on the HL engine. But to say CS:S runs on the HL2 engine is the same as saying it runs on the Source engine.

Omg IT RUNS ON CHEESE! WHAT HAS THIS WORLD COME TO.
Ice... dude. It's the Source engine. End o' Discussion. It's the source engine because they decided to give the game's engine its own specific name and then license it out to other games, like CS:S and Vampire: The masquerade. If they hadn't given the engine a name, then we would have probably ended up just referring to it as the HL2 engine. But since an official stance was taken, we go by that.
Oh yeah, Akira, support BSHAX. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

<i><b>Nature Boys</b></i> pfft. Right, w/e.
Master Chief would feed them to the flood. Or maybe just hand them over to the Covenant.
Look at LithTech, which powers NOLF and AVP2 and several other games. Its the LithTech engine. The engine name doesn't need match the game name.
In fact, pretty much the only ones who still name their engines after the specific game its on is id and Epic. Everybody else has a fancy pants name for their engine.
Sad but true. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Can't disagree with that, after seeing that trainwreck he calls a site. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
