to avoid the destruction of mankind i finalize the threads info: ---------------------------------------------- HL2 runs on the Source engine.
There isnt a thing called the Half-Life 2 Engine... course thats the SOURCE ENGINE.
However you could choose to call it the Half-Life 2 engine, course thats the engine of the game thus the half-life 2 engine... wich is source engine.

The HL2 Engine is powered by the source engine, every <u>MOD</u> thats gonna be made for HL2, is powered by the HL2 engine. Every commercial game made with this engine, is so called to be using Valve's source engine.

The Source Engine is the engine that the game runs on. It is the code to determine how things should act when they're thrown into the air, what should happen when people run into a certain class of object, it is the code that is neccessary so when you click, it fires a weapon, that aims somewhere, that impacts upon where you aimed, that deals damage to what you aimed upon, which lowers the health, which kills the person, which changes the model and changes that person into dead spectator mode..
Halflife 2 the game is the world, the story, the adventure. From that base code which makes the game possible, this is where the models, the textures, the weapons, and the maps come into play. This determines what gun you fire, how much damage the bullets do, how much health the other guy has, what his models look like, what the world you run around in looks like.
Counter-strike:Source is the above. It uses the Source engine, as well as some HL2 game code [and old CS code] i would imagine.
