<div class="IPBDescription">Anyone going to do this?</div> I just got the notice right now... I'm downloading it as we speak...

I'm guessing this is like they give you a box with a giant lock on it and later you will pay for the key?

EDIT: Should have said Half Life 2 Preloading... o well...

    Steam servers already saturated. Dont stop your download now, or you'll lose your place.

    On a positive note, the whole thing didnt go down this time. ^__^

    It would help if Valve devoted more of its server power to this...

    They can't even handle the preload (allowing all users to preload)... Imagine when the release day rolls around and it's 10x worse (Everyone who preloaded will try to download the rest of the content/binaries they need, and people who buy the game who didn't preload will need the whole thing).

    Actually, the preload will continue as the game gets closer to completion. At the moment, mostly just textures are being preloaded. As things progress, soundfiles should follow, along with completed level data... the enginge itself will not be added until the release day, though the servers should be able to handle a 20MB file per-person, so long as everyone preloads.

    I dunno, they seem to be handling just fine. Them giving the message that the servers are full(meaning there's a max amount of downloaders allowed at any time) rather than the servers going down from everyone on steam trying to get it at once(which, should the servers not go down, would probably mean an average download speed of 15 kbps) is a good thing if you ask me.

    It is working for me. I got that busy thing for a while, but i kept retrying. It is at 15% now.

    I am going to go to the store when it comes out, buy the box, and then enter the CD key in later. So i have PHYSICAL evidence that i bought the game.

    Everyone that owns Steam and plans to get HL2 will most likely get the preload, its like those who got CZ, did they really want to d/l cs:s <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    They're not using up all the servers because they don't want Steam itself to go down for everyone.
  • jammnojammno Join Date: 2004-01-31 Member: 25832Members
    I don't like how they're making people pre-load. I have barely a gig left on my Hard Drive, and my computer is in no way good enough to even open Half Life 2.

    Steam probably consumes 1/2 my hard drive <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    No one said there forcing you to pre-load, there a popup toask if you want to preload hl2
  • gophergopher Join Date: 2003-08-01 Member: 18657Members, Constellation
    I wonder how many of those people that preload hl2 will buy it over steam too. My guess would be 5% at the most, the rest ist just hogging up the bandwith =/

    pwned.

    <img src='http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v41/tehcheez/owned.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

    edit: also guspaz, those who don't buy it over steam will probably be able to convert their HL2 folder that is installed with their HL2 CD. At least, thats how it was done with HL1, so i don't see why it would change.
  • Hologram0Hologram0 Join Date: 2002-11-19 Member: 9303Members, Constellation
    Hl2 will come with steam support so it probably wont have a separate folder unless you buy the single player only game... It will probably just install steam (the actual CD if you don’t have it) and put the files inside your steam apps folder...

    The only reason that hl1 had to be converted is because it was never designed to run on a platform like steam...

    Anyways the preload is not a big deal... The game it's self is probably a few weeks away... at least... other wise we would have heard about the game being sent to the publisher... Probably will be released early Oct... For HL1's 6 year anniversary...

    That is another reason they aren’t putting to much bandwidth up for the preload... There is no reason that the preload has to be done quickly, just before the game comes out... why put stress on a system when there is no need...
  • Cheez1Cheez1 Join Date: 2003-01-28 Member: 12900Members
    Either way, those that buy HL2 in a CD form won't be downloading anything if you ask me. And i agree, not much of a hurry considering it'll be fully released (porbably) months from now.
  • NikonNikon Join Date: 2003-09-29 Member: 21313Members, Constellation
    I dont like the idea of buying a game, and not getting the CD, i think im just gonna wait till it hits store shelves, and not let steam place 10ipi139201029p-2pjkl j09 gigs of preloads on my computer just yet.
  • AlignAlign Remain Calm Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 5216Forum Moderators, Constellation
    It's 500 MB. Not the full game, remember?
  • TwilightTwilight Join Date: 2004-02-20 Member: 26730Members, Constellation
    Yeah I dont understand why people would rather pay to download the game then to get a hard copy for the same price (is it the same price?). Just think if you have to format you have to download everything again rather than just popping the cd in and 15 mins later you're up and running again
