People In Possesion Of "Duped" Credits?
Saw this rather amusing article over on the WarBucket forums.

The run-down:
There is some sort of credit duping bug and after being heavily exploited by folks such as this "bruceleee" on the Intrepid server. Such an original name! Well apparently he and others started giving out these duped credits for nothing or were "tipping" heavily with them. Instead of trying another less extreme method first Sony banned everyone involved. Whether they knew they had these duped credits or not!

Nice call Blizz...er.. Sony! It's an interesting little bug, how it got left
in the game for so long is beyond me (and Sony too! Haha!) but talk
about taking drastic measures.

Oh one last thing, has anyone heard anything about the World OF Warcraft
Euro Beta sign-ups? The sign-up is now closed but other than that there
doesn't seem to have been much news?

yeah I read about that too - apparently it spread like a virus... whoever had duped credits and traded or gave them to another player, flagged the other player as a 'cheater' - and so on til tons of people were flagged as cheaters, even though very few people even knew what was going on when they were banned...

Really? I heard about this on the planetside boards, and the way I heard it they didn't ban the people, but all the fake credits disapeared. And since they worked their way into the economy just like real fake money (heh), some people found themselves suddenly bankrupt.

Sony, admit it, you don't know what you're doing.

I officaly will never play SWG now.
/me points at Blizz, THEY EVEN DID THIS RIGHT!
They just removed all the duped items.

First my beloved Infantry, now this.

This is the first time I have ever actualy seen a game company deserve the crap that every one will pile on em.

The 'best' thing is that there's a feature called 'tipping', which means that people can give you creds - and there's nothing you can do against it. Thus, when it became apparent that Sony was going to play this á la Bad Cop, a lot of ragers began tipping out duped credits left and right, and people couldn't do a thing...
  • ThansalThansal The New Scum Join Date: 2002-08-22 Member: 1215Members, Constellation
include in that is the fact that you can tip some one who is off line.......

    Their soloution:
As soon as you are given a large sum of Creds, you have to contact a GM......

yah know what, with the number of people that have probably been banned, the SWG team has a few months worth of tracking logs to see who should be banned and who shouldn't, I get a feeling that this could almost be enugh to kill SWG (depending on how many people got hit)

Meh. I don't know anyone banned, I don't know anyone who knows anyone who was banned, and I haven't see ONE person in game complaining about the bans. And I'm in a guild of 50+ hardcore players who play regularly and take the game a bit too seriously.

Update: A LARGE group of people gathered in one of the starports in order to stage a protest over SOA's dealing with the situation. Every single one of them was somehow removed from the game. AKA, they all just vanished at the same time. Either they were kicked off the server or banned as well.

    Way to go, sony.

I think the server went down. That usually happens when a bunch of people decide that they're going to be cool and overtax the engine. It happened once when a bunch of wookiees protested about the lack of armor for them.
  • MedHeadMedHead Join Date: 2002-12-19 Member: 11115Members, Constellation
Could be that, or Sony shut it down. Still, staging a protest and spamming the in-game chat for a personal agenda, which may not match those of the others in the same area, is petty. Buy the game again if it means so much. Go play something else. It's just a game. I know it's hard, and everyone can get myopic with things. Sometimes it's good to take a step back and prioritize. If a game is so important that you're going to spend the fun playing time complaining about the injustices in the game, perhaps it's time to move on.

My character was a Master Bounty Hunter, Master Pistoleer, and a Novice Brawler (Intimidate 1 worked great against those jedi.) when I played. I recenetly just canceled my subscription (about 2 weeks ago) becuase SWG is ruined. There is a thing called "buffs" in the game where doctors are able to make all of your stats (minus mind) about 6x that of what they normally were.

This destroyed the game. People were able to afk-macro through combat classes, and you didnt even have to afk macro to advance quickly. Simply get a buff for 10k (chump change in SWG) and go off and level up very very quickly. I did Master Pistoleer in just a couple of days. The way to become a jedi is simple - when any character is made, that character has 5 professions they must master (out of the 32 available) in order to become a jedi. People just got buffed, went out, and mastered professions left and right. This allowed for FAR too many jedi in the game. The jedi were hardly anything like the ones in the movies, rather they were annoying cry babies who were out to just PK everyone.

If buffs were never in SWG, then I would probably still be working on my way to becoming a Master Bounty Hunter and probably there would be about 1/8th of the amount of jedi that there currently is. Groups might actually have some importance, and the game might actually be fun.

That had nothing to do with the post, however for those of you that don't play SWG, I have described the problems that most SWG players feel ruined their game. This (the incident on Intrepid) will be the final nail in the coffin for most players. Me? I already got out of the game.

*edit* Oh, and with Jump to Lightspeed I think they hope to get one last big boom of money before they stop caring about SWG. EQ2 is coming out for them and that's a shoe-in for success (wasn't SWG also supposed to be a shoe-in? They managed to mess that one up pretty good)

An EVE Online Player (I think his name was NightFreeze If i remember correctly) set up a dummy corporation in space and scamed MILLIONS of credits out of other players in investment frauds.

You can read about it here. the guy actualy wrote a 13 page article on how he did it.

    http://static.circa1984.com/the-big-scam.html

Very intersting. virtual white collar crime.

I didnt read how he did it, something with investments.

Usually you get investors for your company and you promis them large % proffits in return.

You then get more investors and then you repay (with interest) your origional investors with the funds from the later investors, (but they dont know that). Then it looks like you made good on your promises and you made some people rich.

This makes other potential investors confident in you and they inturn invest in you.

This is called a Ponsi scam (named after the inventor of the scam in the early 1900s) Or a pryamid scam. B/c you reguarly pay off previous investors with the money from newer ones. Eventyually you rack up so much "owed" debt it becomes appararent to the powers that be, even though you are swimming in $.

In the end the EVE guy simply dumped his earned $300,000,000 to some guy and logged off never to play the game again.

If enough people got banned there could probably be a class action lawsuit over it. Think about it, most of the people who play these expensive games have jobs, and therefore one of them might be a lawyer and/or knows one. Stripping a few hundred/thousand paying customers w/o just cause would get lawyers all wet thinking about the lawsuits they could file...

The EVE Online thing though, that sounds absolutely hilarious.
