First started/invented by Itialian Immigrant in Boston Massechuesetts,
Charles Ponzi (he did it with international postal reply coupons instead of space mining lol)

First started in the year 1920. Its estimated 40,000 investors entrusted about $15 million dollars (about $140 million in U.S. today money).

Since then its been repeated thousands of times but usually on lower scales.

The scam was an awesome read. Does anybody here play Eve online and can tell me what it's like? I'm at the site and will check it out, i guess.. I'm not into spaceship or space games, but going around robbing people sounds cool...

Well, I'm just guessing here, but I believe Infantry was the SOE game Planetside [gives me an IE error, at the moment]. The MMOFPS where you run around an entire planet on one of 3 teams shooting lots of other people, in a usually lag-free enviroment (although it ran poorly when I tried the Fileplanet trial out - lag and graphicwise).

...but, maybe I'm wrong .

SOE has pretty much sucked since Everquest, and all their "Hey, our servers are down for no apparent reason - give us your money!!!" These games get boring with repetitiveness and dry exploring. Once you've seen and done the basics (unless there's somewhere really cool to see), there's nothing else left.

I wish I had had a computer when UO was at its peak...that game sounded really fun (just a story of a guild that kept a Lich in its guild hall for practice sounds interesting - and that's just a grain of sand...). I think a 3d version of UO would rock, if it were throughly bug tested.

But it'd be almost impossible to match. Too bad I've never played it .

hehe

Planet side != Infantry

Infantry was orginaly made by Harmless Games (their logo was a teady bear holding a zipo and a stick of dynomite )

Remember Subspace? (topdown, online ship on ship combat, had physics much like asteroids)
This is a game similar to it.

Basicaly they wrote an engine similar to the subspace one, and then tweaked it to create around 10 different games.

The basic type consisted of playing a small marine type in team DM. (exept with serious toneing down the momentum factor)
Then they implemented credits (for buying new toys)
Then Persistancy
Then objective bassed maps
Then scenario maps (they had an aliens vs marines map that was cool)

The game had actualy was going down the crapper by the time Sony bought it, and Sony jsut put the few final nails in the coffin, then chargewd you to play

I remember the good ol' days when Infantry was free (or at least most of it was). The only people who could be convinced to play an ugly top down shooter were those who really wanted the teamplay inherent in the game, and you had to stick together or else. Nothing beats the memory of driving a loaded APC behind enemy lines, staying undetected until the last moment. Oh, I wish Infantry was still as it once was. Woe is me.

That scam was a good read. Driven to darkness by the injustice in the souls of humanity..ahhh. Eve scam: The movie. I can picture it now.

Yeah, anyway, the SWG thing sucks. I'm personally waiting for the matrix online before I re-enter the world of MMO games.

i remember Infantry, a little bit. if i'm correct, it was a top down 2d game which was a sort of 2d counterstrike thing, complete with grenades and sniper rifles. i never played it much, it was fun when i did though.

EVE is what it sounds like in the scam: Boring. You either mine, build things, hunt pirates, be a pirate and kill people, etc... its not all that fun. I wouldnt advise you to buy it. I've played it.

I was gonna download it [it fact i made have already, but i cant find where i saved it to ], but i looked at it and it had a pricetag... grr. Does anybody know any good mmorpg's that are either free [and 3d, preferably even FPS], or have a small cost but is a very good game? I know, i looked at the other thread, but i was wondering if anything had changed since then or people had found new things

I remember when Infantry was new. I remember the Harmless Games jingle and logo. I remember the great fun of that simple yet amazing free game.

And by the gods, do I mourn for it. I mourn for the motorcycle sport in it.

Edit: WOW. WOW. WOW. That Scam was the greatest thing I've read for over 2 years. It almost brought a tear of pride to my eye. Words cannot express the absolute joy I felt for every **** in the world when I read that story. I now aspire to pull off a rage that absolutely massive.

there are none.

the good ones cost to much to make.

the free ones are 3d isometric, and rather silly.

yah, Infantry was like my second real online game (how I miss it still)

the squad tactics in the game were to die for
