I'd say, best amd 64 processor, best Motherboard to support said processor, 2gb of corsair xms ddr400, 2x 73gb 10k rpm SATA drives in raid 0, Water cooling system for ultimate quiet, a nice 6 channel sound card, and a big power supply. Stick it all in a nice Lian li case with a window and some cathodes. Then for the graphics card, either the x800 xt PE, or SLI 2 6800's (Whatever the best type of them is that supports SLI)
corsair ram- should i just order it off there site?
motherboard-any suggestions?
6 channel sound card- can you name a good one?
powersupply-how many watts? 400? 450?
video card- what the hell is a x800 xt PE or a SLI 2 6800s?
yeah i know 3000 may be much but i want one of the best possible rigs
[edit] or you could go insane and buy four of <a href='http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator/PartsInfo.asp?ktcpartno=KVR533D2E4/1G' target='_blank'>these</a>
As for the others, I can't really think of anything. Haven't built my own computer yet XD
<a href='http://www.newegg.com' target='_blank'>http://www.newegg.com</a>
Just set everything on highest priced and you'll be all set.
ehhhh hehehe
as for what I would put in?
some realy spiffy things <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
......
Alien ware has deided to market a $5K computer (and that isn't even with all the options)
I want one.
soooooo
who wants to donate 1$ to me?
I figgure If I get 1$ from each active forum member I should be able to get one sweet pc <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I bet the alien ware rips you off a whole bunch, get me the specs and I can confirm it for you... (either that, or they charge you for parts you will never need, like a 300 dollar chrome keyboard and/or mouse, or a $600 monitor with collectors addition cathodes on it for decoration and what not)
this includes pci-e
what mother board has 2 agp slots?
how to vent all that heat?
do they have any issues?
Athlon 64 FX-53
Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition
2 74GB 10,000RPM Raptor Hard Drives in a RAID-0 Config
4 512MB sticks of DDR400 RAM
AccuSync 21" CRT Monitor
It will certainly give Doom 3 some much-needed replay value. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> Again... and again... and again...
Oh yea, in case you are thick, I think you should get the same stuff, except the monitor.
As an alien ware rippoff? Why yes it does! (Thats way above a developer grade machine, no gamer could effectivly use those features to thier full value)

They're not agp, they're PCI-X, which runs way faster than AGP for vid cards. As for the heat issue, look at the cards, they spew heat out of the back of the machine, they wouldn't run at acceptable temperatures any other way. I have no idea what issues they have, prosumably the cost a little more computer savey and attention than your standard issue AGP slot card (check heat from time to time and what not) but I doupt they have any limitations when compared to other cards...
[edit] sorry for the double post, I hate quoting to people in one post <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif' /><!--endemo-->
What are you talking about? Nvidea 6800GT's are remarkable well cooled, and the CPU and box would be liquid cooled in any machine that has more than $2000 sunk into it... (not to say that liquid cooled systems don't use heatsinks, just to say that noise isn't an issue on liq cooled systems)
I don't even think Athlon 64 mobo's even come with pci express, yet.
The only pci express motherboards I saw were mostly Pentium 4's.
From what I read online, nForce4 is going to support PCI express, but that's not going to be until a few months from now.

This man is right, why spend all that money when in 6 months you could build the same machine you have for half the price.

Actually while their cases and keyboards and mice are generally very cool/nice looking, they also are very cheap. 'Bout $50 for each piece, and each peice is the top of the line.
A lot of times Alienware themselves tweak their own products(hardtweak- not just settings) for higher quality, and to work together with the other parts, so that each part does its part incredibly well, and will do it fast too(being they work together). A lot of times you could get a 3k Alienware PC, and find that you could spend that 3k on any other parts/accessories, and it'll never measure up to that alienware.
I'd say go Alienware, or learn to build your own PC. Just don't do any other manufacturers- only Alienware. They may not be the fastest when it comes to using new gear, but its worth the wait, always.

You are wrong.. You can never have too much processing and video card power.. Especially rendering 3d still takes ages..

HDD: High RPM Maxtor RAID HDD (consult someone else on the RAID modes, not to familer with them.
Processor: AMD 64 Bit Processor - get the highest level out. It changes so often I'm not sure exactly what it is right now... I think 3400+?
Case: Aspire Alien-X cases are really nice, but since you're going for the really high-end system, you'll need a good PSU. Get a server case with an ATX form factor, so you will have a lot of room to work in it, and it will be easily expandable. I'd get at least a 500W PSU. I'm not too sure about water cooling... the consept seems good and all, but if something went haywire, oh crap, you might be screwed. If you get a case that has plenty of fans you will be fine. (My Aspire Alien-X case has 6 80MM fans plus a 420W PSU with 2 fans on the PSU, making for a total of 8 fans, 3 are green led fans) Thermaltake also makes good cases, but usally are much more expensive then Aspires though... but since you've got so much money to work with it won't be an issues for you. I'd get the best case you're willing to shell out the money for.
Motherboard: Obviously one that is going to accomadate the rest of your hardware. I'd wait to build your new computer though until the new stable lines of motherboard withs full PCI Express graphic capabilities come out however. Make sure you get a motherboard that can either handle PC-3200 Duel-Channel - DUEL, not single, channel DDR memory, or higher end DDR3 memory (pc-3500, PC-4200, so on, and so forth), you're best bet here about memory is to ask someone else on the performance comparisons of Duel-Channel DDR2 vs DDR3
Video Card: Wait until the stable lines of PCI Express video cards come out, then get a 6800 PCI Express... you'll be glad you did.
Make sure you get a floppy drive, great incase of emergencies.
Since you're not going to buy speakers, just get a Sound Blaster PCI 128, thats all you need. If you have good headphones (I have Audio 50.'s) then the surround sound will work great. EAX technolgy and higher end cards really only take advantage of the "situation", so to speak, if you have a high quality sound system.
Sony's media products (CD-Media and Floppy Media) work great, if you're going to purchase anything like that, I'd buy Sony. I have a Sony 52x32x52 CD-Burner and a Sony Floppy (both black) and they work great.
Thats all I can think of for now... tired. Hope that helped a bit.

Add a few fans and cables to reach $3000.
RAID 0 is great if you hate your data. Use the extra money you have to go with a RAID 0+1 or 5 if you are going to do it at all.
RAID 0 has NO tolerance for any drive failures. Given the fact that every time you access data or alter it each disk must be used. The probabilities for failure are much greater than with a single disk or even several but independant disks.
For the money, I am not sure a RAID would be worth it as the performance boost would be negligable unless you are running some sort of database.
AMD Athlon 64 CPU 1600mhz Front Side Bus
2GB Corsair XMS Memory (1GB X 2)
ATi Radeon X800 Pro
Maxtor 200GB SATA Hard Drive
ASPIRE X-Superalien Red Aluminum Case w/ 500w Power supply
That's what I'm doing. I'm waiting until December to roll around then I'm going to spend about $1000 on an Athlon 64 system.
The only thing I'm buying right now for my system is a nice new Raidmax Scorpio 868 with black-colored Aluminum casing. Then I'm going to put about 5 red 40cfm 80mm LED's in it, then it's going to look sick. <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-156-148&depa=1' target='_blank'>868 Scorpio</a>
Not buying it yet, though. When I get back from vacation. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Do you really need 4GB of ram? It's not like you can't add more later. One of those chips is plenty.
I'd suggest getting any decent processor (doesn't matter THAT much for gaming), a $2-300 vid card, a really nice sound set, and a gigantic CRT monitor.
You will get more out of a $200 vid card + a second one two years later than a $500 one now.
For speakers, the Logitech Z-680 are $200 and some, and are completely badass.
<a href='http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=589170/search=fe211' target='_blank'>NEC MultiSync FE2111SB 22"</a> would be my monitor of choice.
<a href='http://www.maximumpc.com/ranking/rankings2.html' target='_blank'>Maximum PC</a> maintains a list of the sweetest hardware, if you want to spend your 3 grand in other ways.
