If I'm going to get a 22" monitor, I rather just get a flatpanel one.

    19" LCD: <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=24-194-001&depa=1' target='_blank'>$435</a>

What application would actually require four gb's of RAM? The highest ammount of RAM anyone would really need in their computer, especially a gaming rig, would be 2gb.

Wrong. I put a 10 iteration meshsmooth modifier on a simple mesh in 3dsmax and it required 26.5GB of RAM (it took 20 minutes using swap space). However, I don't know of any commercial motherboards that hold 26GB of RAM <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

If I had $3000 for a gaming rig, I'd definately get the best Athalon64, as much RAM as the motherboard can hold, an X800XT Platinum, some nice SATA RAID (250GB drives no less), a kickass sound card (Turtle Beach Santa Cruz probably), some nice 7.1 surroud sound speakers, and DEFINATELY a second monitor. Oh, and use the rest to get a sweet case and mod it up.

If I recall correctly, the Santa Cruz doesn't support 7.1 surround. I myself am on the brink of scrapping the idea of risking incompatibility between the Athlon 64 and the Audigy 2 ZS and simply getting a SC and a nice headset.

Or get a 'good' but not extreme gaming rig and invest the remaining $1,500

$3000 is a ridiculous amount of money to spend on those parts, but here's what I would get:
    $135.00 <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=11-119-023&depa=0' target='_blank'>Cooler Master Wave Master Case </a>
    $152.00 <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-499&depa=0' target='_blank'>ASUS "A8V Deluxe Wi-Fi" K8T800 Pro Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 939 CPU</a>
    $589.00 <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=14-130-196&depa=0' target='_blank'>eVGA nVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra Video Card, 256MB</a>
    $66.00 <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=17-153-009&depa=0' target='_blank'>Thermaltake W0010 Silent Purepower 480W </a>
    $652.00 <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-465&depa=0' target='_blank'>AMD Socket 939 Athlon 64 3800+, 2.4 GHz, 512KB L2 Cache 64-bit Processor</a>
    $1,380.00 <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=20-145-504&depa=0' target='_blank'><b>4x</b> Corsair XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series, Low Latency 184 Pin 1GB DDR PC-3200 PRO</a>
    $89.00 <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/SearchProductResult.asp?Description=29-121-101&DEPA=' target='_blank'> M-AUDIO 7.1 Channel PCI Sound Card, Model "Revolution 7.1" </a>
    $3,063.00

If it were me though, I'd spend about 1/4 as much money and get a pc 3/4 as good.

amen to that MrPink, especially on the soundcard.

Forget the floppy, get a USB pen drive. It's in every way superior.

Of course, one of my computers has a 5-1/4 drive (purely for decorative purposes)...

make sure the mobo supports socket 940, for it is the future.

    PCI-X too.

    heres one for you; <a href='http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thunderk8qspro.html' target='_blank'>http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thunderk8qspro.html</a>

the most powerful commercially avaliable motherboard i can find. this "PC" would be able to run four NS servers and these forums. also supports 32gigs of ram.

I am not getting a motherboard with PCI-X if it can only support Pentiums. AMD all the way for me.

My main focus right now would be two large hard drives (60-80GB), a CD-R drive (faster than my pathetic 4x), one or two model versions below the top-of-the-line processor and motherboard (to ease cost), two 21" flatscreen monitors, a dual-monitor supporting video card (ATI Radeon 9600 does this, I believe) and around a total of 2GB of memory. Gaming is almost a secondary thing for me now, since I don't play many new games and infrequently play Half-Life modifications. These upgrades would be for my Photoshop work, which in large images can take quite a while to complete simple tasks.
